- cuttyhunk, on 11/10/2007, -10/+28That is so amazing, it is absolutely beautiful.
- m3t00, on 11/10/2007, -20/+5You were brainwashed by the cheesy Techno loop and that last bong hit. I was thinking about how much CO2 all those vapor trails represent. Have a wet blanket.
- dan00b, on 11/10/2007, -3/+5If you care about CO2 emissions and all that *****.
- hiikeeba, on 11/08/2007, -0/+2It's like all those news readers rushing to Antartica to show how the ice is melting. If they flew on a plane, they contributed more to global warming that I did. The bastards!
- sexybobo, on 11/09/2007, -0/+4lets not even talk about "live earth" what better way to stop global warming than to have hundred of thousand of people fly in on a plane or drive to concerts all around the world.
- Micktion, on 11/10/2007, -0/+1He's actually right, in very ill spoken way...
http://archives.cnn.com/2002/TECH/science/08/07/co ...
Scientists were actually quite shocked by the difference no air traffic made.
My thoughts were very similiar and my reaction "to oh.... that looks so beautiful" well I'd say that's exactly what a deer or rabbit thinks as they're stairing into the lights of an oncoming car.
- cdahlkvist, on 11/10/2007, -14/+9Beautiful? It's a computer generated model. It's not like that is what it actually looks like. Did you read the description? "Data from the U.S. Federal aviation administration is used to create animations of flight traffic patterns and density"
ANIMATION.- jeremyjx, on 11/08/2007, -3/+6It still takes creativity to think to put that raw data into a visual form.
- cdahlkvist, on 11/09/2007, -5/+3It does? Well I must be pretty creative since I take XML data and turn it into BI reports all day long.
/sarcasm- cwgannon, on 11/09/2007, -0/+5Right. The difference is that this guy did it and created something aesthetically pleasing.
Maybe you're just pissed you didn't think to do this first or something, but it's pretty childish to dismiss it because you sort of kind of know how to do this same thing.
- cwgannon, on 11/09/2007, -0/+5Right. The difference is that this guy did it and created something aesthetically pleasing.
- t1m0j5, on 11/09/2007, -0/+9animation can be beautiful....dickweed
- cdahlkvist, on 11/09/2007, -5/+3It does? Well I must be pretty creative since I take XML data and turn it into BI reports all day long.
- screwzluse, on 11/10/2007, -0/+3I'm not sure I see your point. An animation based on data can't be beautiful? I find Electric Sheep screensavers can be pretty pleasing to the eye.
- jeremyjx, on 11/08/2007, -3/+6It still takes creativity to think to put that raw data into a visual form.
- KennMac, on 11/09/2007, -3/+6Yeah, and "seen from space"? More like, seen from a video processor.
- BirdCatcher, on 11/08/2007, -0/+1I find it discerning.
- m3t00, on 11/10/2007, -20/+5You were brainwashed by the cheesy Techno loop and that last bong hit. I was thinking about how much CO2 all those vapor trails represent. Have a wet blanket.
- clickmyface, on 11/08/2007, -2/+15Wow, i'm surprised at how few planes go in and out of Seattle. Thats crazy. The entire eastern half of the country (almost down the middle) has a huge amount of air traffic. Based off that, you'd think Missouri was a happening place and Seattle hardly had any travelers.
- gmiley, on 11/08/2007, -0/+2I knew we had a lot of air traffic here in Florida, but never realized how much as compared to the rest of the country.
- jimdye, on 11/09/2007, -3/+4All of that Missouri traffic is most likely FedEx in Memphis.
- dan00b, on 11/09/2007, -3/+4Memphis, TN?
And before you say it, UPS is in Nashville, TN - sexybobo, on 11/09/2007, -1/+2Missouri Has MCI it is still a fairly large hub lots of people stop here to board another plane and leave (lucky people).
- aduzik, on 11/09/2007, -0/+1True; some of us will drive three hours from Des Moines just to get on a plane and leave Kansas City. (Actually, it's because Southwest doesn't fly out of DSM and their flights out of OMA suck)
- dan00b, on 11/09/2007, -3/+4Memphis, TN?
- mrASSMAN, on 11/08/2007, -0/+2Seattle has a huge amount of air traffic, but the population is small in the northwest region compared to the east, so it looks anemic in comparison. In the single city, there is a lot, but there is really only one major airport in Washington, Seatac, and it's very busy 24/7. The region is all mountainous and sparsely populated as opposed to the eastern half of the US which is flatter and densely populated.
- Shelby69, on 11/08/2007, -0/+4It's like the Halo 3 map of who's playing where. America has a very clear line directly down the middle, with many players on the east side and a lot less on the west.

- Llandrix, on 11/09/2007, -15/+7It's pretty awesome how something as random as air traffic can create something this awesome. We just need to set it to some music now. Very very cool.
- thcobbs, on 11/09/2007, -0/+22Sorry buddy.... air traffic is anything but random.... and humans find symmetry more appeasing to the eye than asymmetry
- bitspace, on 11/09/2007, -0/+8The video had a sound track...
- magiclava, on 11/08/2007, -2/+2I vote for a soundtrack thats awesome.
- ChuqAU, on 11/09/2007, -23/+2I couldn't see London, Tokyo or Singapore on this anywhere.. surely they would stand out pretty well!
- kweeky, on 11/09/2007, -3/+28It's only covering US Airspace
- sarin, on 11/12/2007, -12/+6OMFG!! Didn't you know that the US is the only country in the world these days?
- thcobbs, on 11/09/2007, -1/+15Didn't you know it stated from the outset that it was FAA data.... Last I checked, the FAA wasn't an international organization.
- witcompe, on 11/08/2007, -0/+1The FAA works closely with many international sites. In fact, the traffic management program that the FAA uses (ETMS) is used by Western Europe, Mexico, Central and South America and Canada. How do I know this? I am an air traffic manager and work for the FAA. That video is pretty much what I watch all day, although not set to techno and much higher resolution.
- sarin, on 11/12/2007, -12/+6OMFG!! Didn't you know that the US is the only country in the world these days?
- FuzzplugJones, on 11/09/2007, -3/+0hahahahahaha
- ChuqAU, on 11/09/2007, -1/+1Tough crowd.
- kweeky, on 11/09/2007, -3/+28It's only covering US Airspace
- kweeky, on 11/09/2007, -6/+13There is something truly organic about the way we design our technology.
- dolazy, on 11/09/2007, -1/+6I agree, I also find that highways seem so organic if seen from above.
- TomJohn, on 11/09/2007, -0/+1We're organic critters! Whaddya expect? ;)
- eliomar, on 11/08/2007, -3/+4that explains why the airports have such traffic at specific times of the day. Beautiful indeed.
- howilearned, on 11/08/2007, -0/+3You'd be surprised at all the near misses they've had despite the specific times/coordinations. I agree with you - this was beautiful.
- ragmaster, on 11/09/2007, -4/+18This submission had the rights to mention AMAZING in its title.
- rblancarte, on 11/09/2007, -0/+2But everyone is thankful it wasn't
- getrealnow, on 11/09/2007, -12/+3Lots of emission trails as well!
- FuzzplugJones, on 11/09/2007, -3/+1I'm sure if Al Gore could be on every one of those planes, he would be.
- IgWannA, on 11/10/2007, -23/+5just shows you that americans rarely travel outside their country
- Error601, on 11/08/2007, -2/+11What?
- FuzzplugJones, on 11/08/2007, -3/+3Now *that* is a champion troll.
You call it xenophobia, I call it good taste.
Thanks for the laugh. - 1337pino, on 11/08/2007, -0/+1Did you not see the GIANT stream of flights going to Europe from the Eastern coast? And lets not forget the flights from LAX to the Pacific ocean and beyond.
- logga0, on 11/09/2007, -13/+4HALOEZ IZ BETTER
- linksus, on 11/09/2007, -14/+8.. And the cause of global dimming.Without this . global warming would be worse. All these jet trails help reflect light/heat that would otherwise be getting to the surface.
- kweeky, on 11/09/2007, -4/+6Care to cite your sources/evidence?
- Tyrghast, on 11/09/2007, -9/+6care to find proof that 'global warming' isn't just the natural order of things and that Al Gore shouldn't have won an award for a very simple slide show with crappy theme music and zero facts lined with double-talk?
- kweeky, on 11/09/2007, -2/+4Firstly, I didn't ask for "proof", I merely asked for some sources of his claim or at least some scientific evidence for which to base his claim. Secondly, you make the asininumption that not only have I seen "An Inconvinent Truth" but also that I rate it highly. Considering as I have not seen the film, lest of all be in a position to rate it positively, I am not entirely sure what you're trying to get at here.
- preisler, on 11/08/2007, -2/+2A good starting point: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Global_warming#Refere ...
- preisler, on 11/08/2007, -0/+2And you can start with some of these: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Global_dimming#Refere ...
- kweeky, on 11/08/2007, -0/+3It was an interesting theory that I had not come across which is why I wanted to read more about it, so thank you. :)
- Tyrghast, on 11/09/2007, -9/+6care to find proof that 'global warming' isn't just the natural order of things and that Al Gore shouldn't have won an award for a very simple slide show with crappy theme music and zero facts lined with double-talk?
- dan00b, on 11/09/2007, -5/+5In the mid 20th century, the big concern was Global Cooling due to the sun not being able to get through the smog. Mid '70s, I think.
Goes to show how global warming is really just another trend. Global Cooling, Acid Rain, Global Warming, et cetera.- Gwyddyon, on 11/09/2007, -0/+3You do know that in a lot of places acid rain is still a huge problem, right?
- witcompe, on 11/09/2007, -0/+2It is a computer ANIMATION. The trails were added for effect. Getting all the US flight data is easy. Making it look interesting is not. The title is inaccurate since this is not a view of air traffic from space. It is a view of air traffic from an animation with the real world data plugged into it.
- kweeky, on 11/09/2007, -4/+6Care to cite your sources/evidence?
- linksus, on 11/09/2007, -7/+2" is pretty awesome how something as random as air traffic can create something this awesome. We just need to set it to some music now. Very very cool."
Its not random, its a set of pre-defined flight paths ;)- bellapria, on 11/08/2007, -0/+1It is, and I love how it almost outlines the U.S. just with the flight patterns
- Tyrghast, on 11/13/2007, -6/+47the title is misleading, this is not 'as seen from space' this is 'running data through a marginally impressive visualization and periodically taking the map in and out of the video to show patterns'.
- Schneckehaus, on 11/08/2007, -4/+1Thats cool in all, but after turning off the music, it didn;t seem so "amazing"
Still cool, but marginally less so.
I think the music uses subtle suggestion to mare it seem more interesting than it is.
Funny. - bashar129, on 11/09/2007, -2/+21I kinda want to see what the air traffic was on 9/11.....how it was a normal busy morning and within a matter of minutes every plane was grounded.
- p0ss, on 11/13/2007, -1/+3except for one...
- cash0utcurse, on 11/09/2007, -5/+5I think this was on the front page... a while ago.
- flytronix, on 11/08/2007, -4/+1that's great
- gordonf238, on 11/10/2007, -3/+8I prefer to view the footage from its source: http://flightaware.com/analysis/allflights_movie.r ...
- SRSco, on 11/09/2007, -1/+7What, and miss out on that douchebag putting his name on it only because he added some ***** music to the videos?
- doctordbx, on 11/09/2007, -2/+0Is beautiful no?
- mwhatley, on 11/10/2007, -1/+8it looks like everyone is trying to get the hell out of New York
- jlungu, on 11/09/2007, -0/+2or into it ...
- Hockey13, on 11/08/2007, -0/+3No, no, apparently they're just flying thousands of empty planes to New York so that everyone can leave as quickly as possible.
- Error601, on 11/09/2007, -1/+2NY is where most of the flights across the Atlantic start and end.
- jlungu, on 11/09/2007, -0/+2or into it ...
- nesibus, on 11/10/2007, -2/+8Ok, this is far from being "as seen from space" more like "as seen from data analysis"
- Nougat, on 11/08/2007, -1/+1So, there are places (ostensibly in Montana) where you can go at least one day without seeing a single plane in the sky?
- spankr, on 11/10/2007, -0/+1Uh, yeah.
- spankr, on 11/10/2007, -0/+1Uh, yeah.
- Error601, on 11/12/2007, -1/+15This was is cool too if there's people that haven't seen it:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JdrSBzy8NwQ- Oea420, on 11/08/2007, -0/+0hahahahah IMO that was more awesome than the topic
I love how they are constantly going around the horrible weather, and as soon as it's on top of their destination they all turn away hahahah
I dont know why it was so funny though, maybe the music
DUGG
- Oea420, on 11/08/2007, -0/+0hahahahah IMO that was more awesome than the topic
- Taikun, on 11/10/2007, -2/+2Absolutely amazing. Makes me proud to be a pilot in training.
- sfacets, on 11/08/2007, -6/+7This would be so much better if it showed other countries, not just the US.
- PixelD, on 11/10/2007, -1/+2Once again proves, there is nothing in Montana, think a grand total of 3 planes laned there
- HamHead, on 11/08/2007, -2/+0I can just imagine them up in the space shuttle working up the remix on this and oh yeah..make it turn into baby fat....thats cool now spin it around..."those guys at the NTSB will be trippin on this one".
- bills534, on 11/10/2007, -2/+5anybody else notice the flights that seem to end in the pacific ocean about halfway between Hawaii and California and a little to the north?
- Styleboost, on 11/10/2007, -1/+1UFOs?
- Hockey13, on 11/10/2007, -1/+1I know there are a bunch of USAF airbases in the pacific thanks to a minor conflict known as WW2. I don't know if the FAA covers that airspace as well, but it would seem to be necessary as knowledge of that airport's happenings are specifically important to US airspace in general, but more specifically what flies in and around the Hawaii-California corridor.
- Hockey13, on 11/10/2007, -1/+1Something like this:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Midway_Atoll
But probably not actually Midway.
- Hockey13, on 11/10/2007, -1/+1Something like this:
- HoraceQS, on 11/08/2007, -1/+3It's always amazing to me how complex systems start to look similar when viewed from a high level. Compare this to those charts of the internet that are floating around, or neuron maps of the human brain.
Cool stuff. - ellabee, on 11/08/2007, -1/+1Very pretty to watch - looks like fireworks.
- raintheory, on 11/08/2007, -2/+1scary
- TctclMvPhase, on 11/08/2007, -1/+3Kinda reminds me of the end of wargames...when Joshua starts launching all the missiles.
- katya1980, on 11/08/2007, -1/+0Outstanding
- Christia, on 11/08/2007, -3/+2Air pollution was all I could think of.
- flymo, on 11/08/2007, -1/+2You can see live traffic in 3D with Google Earth at http://www.fboweb.com/3d... updates once a minute. The data is from the same source as the animation.
- hydrodev, on 11/08/2007, -2/+1Notice the black spot that remains over Area 51!
- NavS, on 11/08/2007, -0/+2it's insane how you can go from having 100 planes in the sky to 19000... truly amazing.
- zantos420, on 11/08/2007, -0/+0dugg for the kick ass music
- slashbot, on 11/08/2007, -0/+1Awesome video, unique idea, great music.
Dugg - foofiejnooner, on 11/09/2007, -5/+0i always wondered what it would be like to do heroine, thanks!
- pault107, on 11/09/2007, -0/+1Which heroine would you like to do?
- Laughto, on 11/08/2007, -0/+1Probably no one else will get this, but does the music remind anyone else of playing... user-made RPG Maker games?
- deadnewton, on 11/08/2007, -1/+1the data clearly show how many Americans have passports !
- bitchslapper, on 11/09/2007, -0/+2This is a simulation of a Day's Air Traffic not " A Day's Air Traffic as Seen From Space".
- Naryuu, on 11/09/2007, -1/+2lol @ all that exhaust.... no wonder our ozone is melting away
- Marlic, on 11/08/2007, -0/+1Now I know what causing global warming!
- spargett, on 11/08/2007, -0/+1Scientist actually measured a significant decrease in atmospheric temperature when all the planes were grounded on 9/11.
- RussellDovey, on 11/09/2007, -0/+1Bzzzzt: wrong. They (in fact, one guy and his team who happened to be researching the right topic at the right time) measured a definite increase in the amount of infrared radiation penetrating the atmosphere, due to the disappearance of the thousands of contrails usually made by these thousands of planes. It was a landmark study in global dimming, ie the cooling effect of particulate pollution and increased cloud-formation due to industry. Ironically, this has actually mitigated some of the effect of global warming.
- spargett, on 11/08/2007, -0/+1Scientist actually measured a significant decrease in atmospheric temperature when all the planes were grounded on 9/11.
- UNL1M1T3D, on 11/08/2007, -0/+1That was really trippy, but sweet. The music was cool too.
- bpacana, on 11/08/2007, -0/+1How many of you thought of Goblin in Aaron Koblin? I dunno why, but it went through my mind.
- gostars, on 11/08/2007, -0/+1Not "as seen from space".
- lalilulelo, on 11/08/2007, -0/+1does anyone know the artist and track name?
- lalilulelo, on 11/08/2007, -0/+1http://www.phase-2.org/up/files/unplug/061.mp3
song's cleared up sunset by Yasuhiro Tsuchiya - smaisch, on 11/08/2007, -0/+1Thanks, I really enjoyed this track.
