- cinnix, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11I have actually seen one on an ATM near me. I was drunk after a night out and was about to withdraw money from it until I saw that the card reader was not snug against the ATM. In my curiousity I gave it a slight tug and it came off, and thought "right, ***** this" and walked off. If I were a wee bit more sober I should of reported it to the police :/
Lately there more CCTV cameras accompanied with the ATMs, and to say that the banks will lose this fight is a little bit silly. I dunno, perhaps at the little ATMs in the shops, like we saw on the video, but I dont trust them anyway :) - tateblaze, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9Wow thats crazy, i had been told about this but did not know that it was at this level of sophistication.

Or some people aren't aware of the scam and assume the part sticking out is part of the original design of the machine. Unless your reflex is to pull on everything you see sticking out in your daily life, it's reasonable for people not aware of this scam not to pull on it. - ToxicDose, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7lewikee
"Unless your reflex is to pull on everything you see sticking out in your daily life"
Isn't that the standard for men? - lucid270, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5"if we just took the thumb print of every baby born and databased it, we'd have positive ID on everyone at some point in the future"
go, go tinfoil hats! - BurninatorX, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4You people don't see the real story here, the show after this is called "Kick Ass Miracles" Now that is truly worth a dig.
- dankCIA, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5Damn, thats really clever.
Great choice of music for the video. Boards of Canada - Sunshine Recorder - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5It's very rare you'd notice unless you regularly used the same cash machine. If they put a sticker on the machine explaining that protruding devices might be dodgy, they could just cover the sticker up.
The banks really can't win this fight. - Sc0rian, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2yeah getting more common.
if i saw a card machine with one those devices i'd steal the camera + card reader, then burn it. - IvanB, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1The Real Hustle is awesome.
- Micrll, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I also have seen news clips covering this type of scam, there was a huge wave of them in the Chicago area some time ago. The technology is simple and the rest is just classic con artistry. The advice at the end of the video is solid.
1. If anything appears out of place or seems odd about the card reader, just go find another one.
2. shield the pin, I admit that while this looks funny at times its well worth not having to deal with someone swiping your cash. - SilentSpyder, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1The hell with that, I'll use it myself. jk
- 3dom, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I agree, awesome soundtrack. The track at the end was Four Tet.
This is scary as my parents have already been ripped off in a manner similar to this and lost nearly £1000 in one day before they noticed and cancelled the card. - levyjl1988, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Good thing to know
- rabidsnail, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1There is also a simpler and more low-tech trick. In ATMs that you feed your card into (as opposed to the swiping kind) scammers can jam something into the slot to force it to eat your card, and when you go to ask a teller for help, use a screwdriver to coax it back out again with your card. All of these tricks are very risky, though, since nearly all ATMs have CCTV cameras in them (at least in the US).
- unknowndomain, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2why not just pull on any thing which is sticking out before hand?
- kd1s, on 10/12/2007, -3/+3Actually banks could fix this. Perfect example, today the SO went to get his ID. All the documents required by the REAL ID act can be counterfeited and the counterfeits are quite good.
So I told him - if we just took the thumb print of every baby born and databased it, we'd have positive ID on everyone at some point in the future. Then of course we'd need good biometric readers which the folks at Mythbusters have pretty much put the damper on. But it'll happen sooner than later. - danjal, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1In ireland we have a chip and pin system now because of this

- mcwiggin, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1Does anyone know what that first song was?
- Yareking, on 10/12/2007, -4/+2Ok i will punch the atm to see if anything fall a part
- Daveoh, on 10/12/2007, -4/+1Wait a minute, they're using a mac within the first few seconds!
Or did no-one else notice? - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -6/+2Another POS the real hustle video. Please, I beg you, mention it in the title or description at least.
- davidrools, on 10/12/2007, -9/+3they're really the worst of the criminals when their first mark is a black guy
