- FuryOfThor, on 06/24/2008, -8/+32Useful. For anyone learning a language, do it soon; it just gets harder and harder with age.
- Feep, on 06/25/2008, -1/+14Having tried Rosetta Stone, I can firmly say that I absolutely hate it. Language immersion might work for two-year-olds, but I'm afraid I need the SLIGHTEST semblance of grammar, syntax, and vocabulary memorization to properly learn a language.
- Narcism, on 06/25/2008, -5/+17I've never buried so many people before in my life.
- ligyron, on 06/25/2008, -4/+16^ Are these people being paid?
- Surferess, on 06/24/2008, -5/+15From that list, I'd probably choose to learn Tibetan, since it will probably be the first to die out... thereby rendering it totally useless ..... not unlike my music degree.
- ligyron, on 06/25/2008, -3/+12Something is wrong...
http://digg.com/comedy/Positive_Diggers_or_Paid_Ac ... - Mykal73, on 06/25/2008, -2/+11Strangely, "borrowing" a copy of the Rosetta Stone from work isn't on the list....
- Daniel591992, on 06/25/2008, -4/+12Buried for all the SPAM comments here...
- stonebear, on 06/25/2008, -0/+7Joe Stalin used to say that a lot.
- trying2hide, on 06/25/2008, -1/+8You are obviously an American
- snowhite7185, on 06/24/2008, -5/+12Ha, this is awesome. Maybe now I'll get off my lazy ass and learn some French (which I have been meaning to do for about 3 years...whoops).
- inactive, on 06/25/2008, -2/+9http://mangolanguages.com is a very good one as well.
- verevi, on 06/25/2008, -1/+7No, its true because of how our brains are wired. A kid can pick up a language much easier than an adult.
- inactive, on 06/24/2008, -4/+9That is some impressive work. It won't be long before we have a universal translator device.

- NightRiderkami, on 06/25/2008, -1/+5Very cool but I'm trying to learn Gaelic and can't find a good source anywhere :(
- sat0shi, on 06/25/2008, -0/+4If she's IN Tokyo, she should probably not be learning from sites on the internet.
There are plenty of *free* or extremely cheap Japanese tutoring services around ... At least, in Nagoya. I'm sure there are even more in Tokyo. I don't know if there is something in Tokyo like the "International Center" we have here, but if there is, she should check there. - siandt, on 06/25/2008, -0/+3Great, now I can round off my European language collection with Portuguese!
I find the best way to learn a new language is to find a nationalist bar during a major sporting event. Now, if you'll excuse me, I have to go brush up on my German. - danqueca, on 06/25/2008, -0/+3Very Well! Creo que eso significa que hice agua en mis pantalones.
- LinkGCN4, on 06/25/2008, -12/+15These comments are too positive and encouraging.
***** this. Why the hell do I need to learn another language. ***** you all. This is a useless article. *****. - cannonball, on 06/25/2008, -0/+3"useful list" is the most useless comment ever.
- inactive, on 06/25/2008, -0/+3understandable but too far from speaking well.. at least in Russian =)
- songfire, on 06/25/2008, -0/+3For podcasts, I like the Coffee Break Spanish and French from Radio Lingua Network:
http://www.radiolingua.com/ourpodcasts/index.html - sindex, on 06/25/2008, -0/+3I want to learn whatever language that lets me pick up the redhead in the icon.
English you say? Kick ass. - snapcase, on 06/25/2008, -0/+3I "borrowed" my copy from TPB... but all the same in the end.
- macgecko, on 06/25/2008, -0/+2If your looking to learn Russian then you may also want to check out:

- stonebear, on 06/25/2008, -0/+2We did get clamshell cellphones. They sure are dragging their feet on that tricorder though.
- learnoutloud, on 06/25/2008, -0/+1A similar (and complementary) list of free resources:
http://blog.edufire.com/2008/06/20/traveling-this- ... - inactive, on 06/25/2008, -1/+2Language is an advantage when you are looking for work. For example the economy in China in booming and a lot of banks and financial instituations are currently looking for people who can speak chinese.
- MaddieCakes, on 06/25/2008, -0/+1I don't speak a word of German, but I know exactly what that says.
- honthraj, on 06/25/2008, -0/+1Excellent resources - I don't like dropping $550 for language courses, prefer Pimsleur tapes, but these sites should help a great deal.
I'd like to take on Mandarin next. - verevi, on 06/26/2008, -0/+1Ok, so it sounds like you just agreed with me.
- stonebear, on 06/25/2008, -0/+1You are partially right. That is only the case for very young children: The process has a certain brief window that closes quickly. In a normal environment; usually by 4 years, but certainly by 6. That's far younger than is to be found on digg (God, I hope so! OK, maybe not).
Studies of so-called feral (wolf) children are a primary support for this; those rescued older than three never do learn to speak correctly, or effectively, in any human language, including sign language. Because of this, they also never socialize adequately either. - eazhar, on 06/25/2008, -0/+1The pimsleur series are excellent. Very easy to pir8 as well.
- Kelpesh, on 06/26/2008, -0/+1Nook neck teratnan pentecks!
- lampiaio, on 06/26/2008, -0/+1Thanks!
- mrjhmm, on 06/26/2008, -0/+1You can also "borrow" the Pimsleur courses and listen to them on your ipod.

I learned Spanish that way, it saved me $825. - Rotzooi, on 06/25/2008, -0/+1Yes they are, because mostly, they are one and the same person.
- stonebear, on 06/25/2008, -1/+2Sacre bleu! Someone on digg buys software.
- JT114881, on 06/25/2008, -0/+1No Tagalog? Booo
- mikethejohnson, on 06/25/2008, -0/+1OHHH! You totally burned yourself!! OHHHH!
That is pretty funny though... music degree... why would you do that to yourself? - stonebear, on 06/25/2008, -0/+1http://www.friendsabroad.com
- stonebear, on 06/25/2008, -0/+1I suppose you'd just about have to be a Gaelophile to have the interest. Might as well go there and learn it, as you will be going anyway. Irish are big on their culture; it should be no problem.
- JrGhoull, on 06/25/2008, -0/+1i cant believe trymango wasnt on their list...in my opinion (not that i've looked the whole thing over that carefully) this is the only decent free website for learning languages thats out there
- tmart, on 06/25/2008, -1/+2I thought it was for programming languages, but still a good find.
- chamberlanderic, on 06/25/2008, -0/+1i speak two and I'm learning a third one because i feel that 2 is not enough. But its seems to be the case even for peoples who speaks 3 ...
- Narcism, on 06/25/2008, -0/+1Thank you, just doing my part George!
