- NegativeDigg, on 04/10/2009, -2/+39But I bet the administrators keep their jobs... Here in L.A they get paid 100k + and talk about lay offs..
- ericdano, on 04/10/2009, -2/+33*****, what the hell is going on. We are bailing out AIG, Banks (who are raising interest rates and recording record profits), and the Auto Industry......but Schools aren't getting money? Isn't something WRONG here?

This is retarded. - Jeeber4u, on 04/10/2009, -1/+22Yet this is an important topic. This isn't some fluff news article from The Onion, or a cheesy web comic. Maybe it was a good thing this actually made it to the front page?
- Trekhawk, on 04/10/2009, -1/+21Well, you can't go from a peak population of 1.8 million down to 900K and not make adjustments. These sort of shrinking pains suck, but they're inevitable.
- Pecheckler, on 04/10/2009, -1/+15As someone who graduated from a suburban metro Detroit school district, I can assure you this has been happening for many years, and in increasing numbers.
When I was in high school, nearly every semester there was parental bitchfest about how the hard working suburbanite parents were paying for the quality education of the lowly Detroiters. And now I work with people who every day drive their children up to 45 minutes each way, shuttling them out of Detroit or Pontiac, into the charity of successful, modern, suburban school districts. - depro9, on 04/10/2009, -3/+14Detroit is gone, level it & start over. Great place for the venus project to start.

- MichiganJeep, on 04/10/2009, -1/+11Back in 2003, the city was offered 200 million for charter schools...but the bid was pulled after protest from the teachers union and other nonsense from Detroit as noted in the link.
http://foundationcenter.org/pnd/news/story.jhtml?i ... - jah37066, on 04/10/2009, -5/+15Well, that's okay. It's not like school is important anyway.
- lordmike, on 04/10/2009, -8/+18No, it's an example of what right wing trade policy does to a population. You guys gutted the manufacturing base of America and sold our country out overseas, and you want to blame liberals for your failure?
- sexybobo, on 04/10/2009, -2/+12I hope you aren't being sarcastic. In the Kansas City Missouri school district there are 24 teachers sitting in an administration building watching tv every day because they are registered sex offenders (committed the crime after being hired) thus are unable to be teachers or aloud around children but cannot be fired or the teachers union will strike. Some of them have been there watching tv or surfing on the net every school day for 6 years.
PS that is $960k of money not going to there education - tnarugby, on 04/10/2009, -10/+20You all disgust me... [People like Blaynod]
I am from Detroit and the fact that you guys treat these kids like they are trash, is not only insulting, but brings us back to the 1950s and 60s.
They deserve to get the best education possible, not be forgotten like animals. - PopcornDave, on 04/10/2009, -2/+11Every child deserves to get the best education possible but to assume that every kid is going on to college is doing a lot of the kids a disservice since they could be learning other things so that they can actually have a career - even if it's not collegiate or white collar.
The day they took out auto shop, wood shop, music and the art pograms, they killed the ability of a good percentage of the student body to even care about school much less participate. - ianconley, on 04/10/2009, -9/+18GOOD. Teachers unions are evil
- brandita, on 04/10/2009, -1/+9God it must be depressing to live in Detroit. I wonder what will be left of this great American city soon.
- justodd, on 04/10/2009, -0/+8FTA: ".....as enrollment plummeted from 173,848 a decade ago to about 95,000 today." - with only 54% of the peak number of kids in schools, it seems to make sense to close some of them.
- PopcornDave, on 04/10/2009, -0/+7It's not so much the employees but the union leaders that seem to be the evil ones. Granted there are plenty of ***** teachers but there are still some that care and don't tow the union line because they're more interested in teaching than politicking.
- depro9, on 04/10/2009, -0/+7poverty
- nate94gt, on 04/10/2009, -11/+17ah, detroit... the city where only 20% of their students graduate from the public school system
- sexybobo, on 04/10/2009, -0/+6The kids are still going to school they are just closing down schools so they don't have entire school buildings open with just a hundred kids in them.
Imagine how much more money can be spent on their actual education if they have 23 less buildings to maintain and heat ever year with just a little longer bus ride for each kid. - tnarugby, on 04/10/2009, -5/+11Are you being serious?
Your generalizing thousands of kids into a group of animals and trash...
They only reason why they may act this way, is because ignorant pricks like you dont give them the time of day. They grow up in a crooked society where they are taught that they are trash. ***** stuck up people like you only care about themselves and every kid deserves an equal opportunity.
Now go to any public school and they will have kids acting out. - inactive, on 04/10/2009, -2/+7Detroit hasn't been a great American city for at least 30 years, guy.
- stevensj2, on 04/10/2009, -3/+8Its astonishing how quickly so many of you are to blame the kids. As if 6 yr olds and 11 yr olds created this problem, and are now living in the city they deserved.
Maybe, just maybe, there have always been deep-seeded education problems in Detroit. Those graduates didn't get the best education, and consequently, weren't able to make the best lives for themselves and their family. Repeat that process over several generations, and you've got modern day Detroit.
But no...its not the administrators (who refuse to make curriculum adjustments or budget cuts, or to meet MDE (Mich. Dept. of Education) standards and criterion). Its not the teachers, Its not the parents. Its the children. So "lowly" that they don't deserve education, but such masterminds that they caused all this themselves.
And you figured out the solution too: just ignore them and let the city burn. After all "the kids deserve it," and ignoring them has worked wonders so far.
WTF is wrong with you people. - FOR3MAN, on 04/10/2009, -0/+5Well at least we have the Lions!
- hadak, on 04/10/2009, -1/+6I worked in Detroit last year. Those bastards stole my car - while it was full of stuff because I was moving. Two weeks later, I found out that I was getting laid off, and the place I was supposed to be moving in to denied my application. I ended up homeless, jobless, and carless. Bah, it was *****.
- vision777, on 04/10/2009, -2/+7Funny how you people seem to forget when Granholm came into office the state was already having a huge deficit thanks to Engler who was a republcan. Things have gotten even worse thanks to the wackos sending all the jobs out of the country.
- mr5150, on 04/10/2009, -1/+6yet propping up failing banks and business' is good?........this is a national disgrace, i don't care what the failure rate is he remaining 20% have the right to an education.
America is learning to fail spectacularly in everything it touches. - lordmike, on 04/10/2009, -2/+6Ummm... schools are run by the local communities...
- rancor01, on 04/10/2009, -1/+5or you could blackball them. No lists involved.
- yerdaddy, on 04/10/2009, -5/+9Can't they just refinance?
- lemur, on 04/10/2009, -1/+5So true! Those who can't do teach; those who can't teach administrate. However, it's the bureaucrats that get all the money.
- inactive, on 04/10/2009, -0/+4OCP?
- goofproofacorn, on 04/10/2009, -3/+7lord do you even live in michigan? NAFTA has hurt michigan but the high taxes sure aint helping. And Grandholm is virtually worthless shoulda voted her out years ago.
- depro9, on 04/10/2009, -1/+5People will do what they need to do to survive. Walk a mile in their shoes before you cast your stones.
- inactive, on 04/10/2009, -0/+4But, where will Monica Conyers' kids go to school? Oh yeah, that's right, Cranbrook.
- patRIOTik, on 04/10/2009, -0/+4Dugg for accuracy.
- sleestakslayer, on 04/10/2009, -0/+3I second that thought! Columbus Public Schools bullies the citizens into passing levies by slashing curriculum and teachers. Administrators never lose their jobs.
- drivingalone, on 04/10/2009, -0/+3I feel bad for you, Detroit. Get well soon.
- lordmike, on 04/10/2009, -3/+6Man the racist hate here is appalling...
- carlosos, on 04/10/2009, -0/+3Donate the money to keep all the schools open or do you prefer a tax increase?
It is normal for a city with decreasing population to have to close schools or it would operate inefficient (more than otherwise).
If the article would say that every class has 40 students now than I would understand that more money has to go into schools but if it is below that than it is pretty much like any other city. - alamedaman, on 04/10/2009, -0/+3lol@ Robert Bobb, I guess he went from one ***** city (Oakland) to another (Detroit).
- limitGov, on 04/10/2009, -0/+3Absolutely. More importantly, they are a violation of our property and liberty.
- tightscrummy, on 04/10/2009, -0/+3I'm guessing Detroit teachers taught you that "anyways" is a real word?
- ir1337, on 04/10/2009, -1/+4Why does it always have to be about black & white (lists)
- depro9, on 04/10/2009, -0/+3you ever been to Europe?
- pentae, on 04/10/2009, -0/+3Put your hands up, yeah put your hands up.. put your hands up for detroit. I love this city
- PopcornDave, on 04/10/2009, -0/+3It's not reasonable pay when you're laying off teachers due to budget problems. Failing enrollment I can understand, but schools crying poor mouth while the administrators never seems to go is just complete *****.
Doesn't the LA school district have one of the largest ratios of administrators to schools? Isn't it like 1 for every 5-6 schools or something? - depro9, on 04/10/2009, -0/+3Just print more fake worthless notes.
- qnadad, on 04/10/2009, -0/+2Seriously -- that guys name is BOB BOBB?!
