One does not need religion or even spiritual reasons to do this, as it is part of the human organism. In The Relaxation Response (pp 162-163), Dr. Herbert Benson outlines a simple and effective technique for entering a meditative state: 1) sit comfortably, 2) close your eyes, 3) relax your muscles progressively from toes to face [I recommend: gently tense-hold-relax method], 4) breathe in through your nose [I recommend breathing out through your mouth at the beginning, then return to natural nasal breathing], 5) continue for 10-20 minutes, 6) avoid focus on whether or not you think or feel like your are successful. Using this method, many people can achieve meditation and a state of deep relaxation. When used on a regular basis, both mental and physical well-being is strengthened and maintained.
