- smurf22, on 10/31/2007, -2/+44Why not just buy some candles?
- AlexPod, on 10/31/2007, -2/+44emergency lamp / riot negotiation tool
- sagat, on 10/31/2007, -6/+40Need a light in an emergency? simply activate your phone, the backlight will do just as much as this guys Molitov Cocktail, plus you wont burn yourself or your house to the ground.
- s14sh3r, on 10/31/2007, -2/+24True, but the Molotov Cocktail version is effective against zombie attacks.
- DayTripper47, on 10/31/2007, -1/+20Is it just me or did the thumbnail pic make you think he was going to use a condom?
- spect3r, on 10/31/2007, -1/+19Was I the only one who realized that his measurements are way off?
- saleem, on 10/31/2007, -5/+20i ***** hate puppies, buried.
- bobbagoose, on 10/31/2007, -5/+19I love lamp
- saleem, on 10/31/2007, -3/+14what exactly is the difference between this and a molitov cocktail?
- sexybobo, on 10/31/2007, -2/+12you don't throw this. Also molitov cocktail usually use alcohol instead of oil.
- Mentosan, on 10/31/2007, -1/+10Long ago i used something like that almost every night. Makes lots of smoke.
- everfalling, on 10/31/2007, -2/+11so what part of that only cost a buck?
- Gryffydd, on 10/31/2007, -1/+8How are you going to keep your phone charged?
- aguy90, on 10/31/2007, -1/+8it's called a kerosene lamp. they are pretty cheap and use oil now too. they are very handy in emergencies and you'll find them in most hurricane prone areas, since the power always seems to go out when there's a hurricane.
- inactive, on 10/31/2007, -3/+9I love your English, easy to make.
- everfalling, on 10/31/2007, -1/+7i noticed that too.
the thing is, even if you give him the benefit of the doubt that he mistook centimeters for inches, i still don't think he got it right. - inactive, on 10/31/2007, -2/+8urm... i doubt thatd happen... like, its oil. not petrol
- shoutsmurmurs, on 10/31/2007, -1/+7Cool! It's like the oil lamp hasn't existed for millennia!
- NekoIan, on 10/31/2007, -3/+8how are you going to make that in an emergency in the dark?
- munky100, on 10/31/2007, -1/+6I can buy 5 candles for 50 cents ;-)
- Otto, on 10/31/2007, -1/+6Fire will not kill a zombie immediately! It will only turn him into a flaming zombie. Sure, he'll eventually die, but not before blindly setting fire to everything around you (which is always soaked in gasoline for some reason).
To kill a zombie, you must destroy the head and/or remove the brain. - holyspamcans, on 10/31/2007, -1/+6Is that David Blaine narrating?
- lifeinanalog, on 10/31/2007, -5/+9$1! What if I lack a glass bottle with a metal cap? or Cooking oil? Scissors? Scrap Cotton!? Then how am I going to light it?!
I do believe the movie should have said "Emergency Lamp for under $10" ... Other than that it was a nice tutorial. - DanJohnHarris, on 10/31/2007, -2/+6To watch this video, you must know that
1. A dollar is Ten dollars
2. A centimeter is an Inch
3. This video is not worth your time - ChayD, on 10/31/2007, -0/+4Hmmm, doesn't quite beat that soda can alcohol burner from a few months back.
Re: Molotov cocktails; it's cooking oil which isn't really that flammable unless its heated over its
flash point (around 320 Deg C Unlike gasoline or alcohol, who's flash point is below room temperature) and so would need a wick in order to burn well, even then it wouldn't burn that fast. - Markpdotcom, on 10/31/2007, -3/+6Petrol... I think you'll find...
- FishRHuman2, on 10/31/2007, -1/+4I'm sure you mean "$1", not "1$", you moron.
- mithrasinvictus, on 10/31/2007, -1/+4Molotov cocktails use several ingredients (hence the term "cocktail") so it burns/sticks even better.
you can find it on wikipedia if you search for molotov instead of molitov. - 47f0, on 10/31/2007, -1/+4As an alternative you could do what I made for several of my neighbors when hurricane Charlie blew through, taking out our power for ten days:
Ingredients: 1 soda can, one shallow bowl or pie pan, cotton string or twine and cooking oil.
1) Cut the bottom inch and a half or so from a soda can - recycle the top - we just want the bottom.
2) Punch a hole in the center of the can bottom.
3) Thread cotton wick through the hole leaving a few inches dangling from what was the inside of the can and about a half inch sticking out the other side.
4) Put an inch of oil in a bowl (you don't want the oil to be higher than the bottom of the bowl-shaped depression of the can or you'll get a big puddle in the bowl)
5) Set the can bottom into the oil, with what was the bottom of the can facing up, be sure the dangly part of the wick is hanging into the oil, put a drop of oil on top the cotton wick (or just wait a few minutes for the oil to soak up to the top) and light. As a bonus, the shiny concave bottom of the can makes a nice reflector, giving you good ceiling bounce-light.
Tips if you have thin string, double or triple it - the thicker the wick, the brighter - also the faster you use your oil. Also, synthetic string justs melts . Need more light? Just add a few more can lamps to your bowl of oil. Finally, always place where the kids and pets can't get to it. Since this design uses an open bowl of oil, a spill could become a fire - and the last time you want to call the fire department is during the kind of emergency that would necessitate an oil lamp anyway. - inactive, on 10/31/2007, -2/+5LOUD NOISES!
- BTMPL, on 10/31/2007, -2/+5Next up ... man invents a WHEEL!
- SheilaNoya, on 10/31/2007, -1/+3Better yet, just go to Ikea and buy those bags of 100 tea lights for $5.99 when they have them on sale (regularly $9.99 which is still cheap). Each one burns for 4 hours, so you'll have up to 400 hours of cheap and dependable lighting in an emergency. We keep 2 bags of them in our Earthquake kit, along with our other emergency supplies.
- MrSidnet, on 10/31/2007, -1/+3Oil's that cheap.
- kdrlx, on 10/31/2007, -3/+5In India about 95% of us use this everyday and we didn't know this could be on the digg frontpage as "Educational Video"
