- Antixian, on 06/26/2008, -0/+13you obviously dont live in texas.
- fload, on 06/26/2008, -2/+13Drill a tiny hole in the top of the meter so u can wedge a paper clip in it to jam the gears at night
- bincoder, on 06/26/2008, -0/+8The new ac units rock. Since our old one exploded last year, the power bill has dropped by nearly half and I keep the temp a little on the chilly side at all times.
- Gndoab, on 06/26/2008, -1/+9I think you are alone on that one
- leerayIG88, on 06/26/2008, -1/+9I use candles for my power and I live in a box.
- sjug, on 06/26/2008, -6/+13#1 - Use less electricity
- dilbertmouse, on 06/27/2008, -0/+7Let's see how smug you are when you knock one of your candles over.
- chrispr, on 06/27/2008, -0/+7Speaking as a Floridian on a college student's budget, I'd still gladly pay 100$/month or more for AC.
The difference down here is stunning (literally). - endlessoul, on 06/27/2008, -0/+6Or in the South in general, for that matter.
I was born and raised in NY and have since moved to NC.
The heat can be much different. Read: ***** HOT. - GemStar38, on 06/26/2008, -1/+6Make your own air conditioner http://www.gmilburn.ca/ac/pete_ac.html
- leetninja, on 06/26/2008, -1/+6Keep curtains and blinds closed during the day - normally this makes the heat stay outside and the house considerably cooler thus taking less time and less electricity to cool the house down. Personally I can't stand the humidity aspect of the hot days ... 100 degrees with zero humidity would be fine its when its 100 degrees with 80% humidity that makes it unbearable
- antdude, on 06/27/2008, -0/+5It doesn't work in 85+F degrees temperature in the room. Even at max speed.
- rossmcd, on 06/26/2008, -0/+4Here's a tip for refrigerators that they didn't mention. Once a year or so, pull it out and vacuum any dust off of the metal compressor coils in the back. This will allow the heat to transfer out more efficiently, and thus the fridge will need less electricity to keep your food cold and fresh.
- GiJoeBob, on 06/26/2008, -0/+4Try that in East Texas and you will discover the cause of Spontaneous Human Combustion.
- UncleCrapper, on 06/27/2008, -1/+5How is a cold shower "healthier"? This isn't 1908 and you aren't Dr. Kellogg.
- tama00, on 06/27/2008, -1/+5heres a big tip for you diggers, turn your computer off when your not using it.
- Spuy767, on 06/26/2008, -1/+4Plasmas and game systems drawing tons of electricity when off is a myth. My receiver, DVD, 360, PS3, and TV draw less than a quarter amp when off/standby.
- vypergts, on 06/27/2008, -0/+3That's a good way to melt your face off when you cause an electrical arc...
- sunguch, on 06/27/2008, -0/+3NEVER!!!!
- elstevo, on 06/27/2008, -1/+4well, dang. as a poor college student, I don't own a clothes washer, dehumidifier, dishwasher, or ac unit. as soon as I start that diet of baked beans and salt pork, i can throw out the fridge, too. I'll "go green" in no time.
- antdude, on 06/27/2008, -0/+3Or Arizona, or So. CA, deserts, etc. :)
- billizm, on 06/27/2008, -0/+3Subtropical climates like much of Texas, Georgia, Florida, etc are very humid in the summer. Not only does this make the heat seem unbearable to most people, the lasting humidity is bad for the interior of your home. With no A/C, you will see mold problems if you don't decide to get the f* out of the state first, due to the heat.
- ironeus, on 08/01/2008, -9/+11turn off the air conditioner all together, it costs TONS of $$. Unless the temp reaches triple digits a few fans, open windows and a cross-breeze will do the trick. Take the money saved to buy a cold 6 pack -- that'll cool you off too.
- backwash666, on 06/27/2008, -1/+3For those with central air: Make sure your furnace filter is very clean, close the humidifier bypass (put the damper in the summer position), and clean off the outside condenser unit with a garden hose. If you have a return air grate in the basement try putting turning the fan from "auto" to "on" at the thermostat.
- Spuy767, on 06/27/2008, -0/+2You forgot the part about being crammed on a .3 acre lot.
- inactive, on 06/27/2008, -0/+2replacing the filter for the water/ice machine is a huge saver as well.
- Butros, on 06/27/2008, -0/+2We run our AC whenever we are home and our electric bill last month was 110 bucks. In Southern California that's not bad.
- ryan899, on 06/27/2008, -0/+2.25 amps at 120V is 30 watts. So its like leaving a (soon to be non-)standard 60W lightbulb on half the day. Doesn't sound like much but it adds up.
- Butros, on 06/27/2008, -0/+2That might work well in a low humidity area with good breezes.
- wattersm, on 06/27/2008, -0/+2Yeah, cause nobody lived in deserts before the invention of AC.
- MarshalBanana, on 06/27/2008, -0/+2I have the sudden urge to buy some energy star appliances.
- stutimandal, on 06/26/2008, -2/+3I may be alone on cold water showers (in the US). But it feels great, each morning.
It is not as hard as it seems. Try to slowly decrease the amount of hot water you use in shower. - Spuy767, on 06/27/2008, -1/+2I'll tell you what rocks, attic fans. 6000 CFM, cool my house off ten degrees in five minutes.
- vypergts, on 06/27/2008, -0/+1Wait until October when most states offer a tax-free holiday weekend. google it.
- FrankTheTank17, on 06/27/2008, -0/+1The list should be more like 5 Tips for saving money on your electric bill + some common sense ones.
- Spuy767, on 06/27/2008, -0/+1If I left those on standby for 15 hours a day, that would cost me like a buck 30 a month, so yeah, at the end of the year it's 20 bucks in my pocket, but that's not the point. Some of these sites are saying ***** like, "ZOMG plasma TV's use more electricity off than on!!!!" I turn them all off at the power conditioner anyway when i go to bed at night, so I'm using no watts, well, except the .05 to keep the standby LED on my Power Conditioner lit.
- Gndoab, on 06/27/2008, -0/+1Thanks for the tip. Still not doing it :)
- ColonelTribune, on 06/26/2008, -4/+5#1 Don't buy a 50-inch flat-screen plasma TV
- donna1234, on 11/08/2008, -0/+1The ridiculously high cost of gas may be what's got everyone grabbing pitchforks and torches and calling for a revolution, but gas isn't the only utility draining money away from your entertainment fund.

- inactive, on 06/27/2008, -0/+1digg from our blackberry?
- chrispr, on 06/27/2008, -0/+1Or, just allow it to fall into sleep mode since it uses around 3W of electricity (per the digg article I read yesterday).
- arcticblue, on 06/27/2008, -1/+2That KILLS video game consoles and many other electronics. Especially if you live in a humid climate like I do. I'm on my second Wii which is now suffering the same problem my first one did after only 6 months (overheated itself while it's off resulting bad pixels all over the screen...stupid WiiConnect24), I'm on my second PS3 (first one started freezing all the time after the 2.0 update. I don't know whether it was the heat or the update that caused it), and my 360 broke (haven't replaced it yet since it's out of warranty...and modded. Definitely caused by heat). I'm terrified of the humidity and heat destroying my LCD TV, my laptop, and my refurb'd consoles.
Here's a tip for those that want to keep the air conditioning on. My step dad has worked on air conditioners and heaters all his life and passed this on to me. It's actually cheaper to leave your air conditioner on all the time rather than turning it off when you are out for the day. The reason is that your house will heat up alot during the day and your AC will have to work much harder to cool it off using more energy than it would have if it just stayed on "low" all day.
Edit: I didn't RTFA because it's blocked here at work so sorry if that was mentioned in the article. - inactive, on 06/27/2008, -0/+1Attic fans are amazing! We also replaced our elctro guzzler with a new heer unit - electric usage cut in half!
- wattersm, on 06/27/2008, -0/+1I'm never not using the computer. Even when I'm asleep or gone there's still torrents downloading stuff or other processes going on.
- vypergts, on 06/27/2008, -0/+1#2 Get thermal curtains. They make a HUGE difference.
- sherlocktk, on 06/26/2008, -1/+1Here is another "free" idea.
Most Receivers/amplifiers have what are called "switched" plugs in the back, meaning its like an automatic light switch for your devices. You can plug in your sub woofer to this plug, and some other stuff that is only used when watching movies (I have an ambient light plugged into it). I went through our house a couple of months ago, and did many simple things like this. Also electric timers are great to hook up for devices that need to charge batteries. Get a 12 hour timer, put on your battery and don't worry about it. Saving 5w over 24 hours is like not turning on a bulb for 1 hour. - Rob22, on 06/27/2008, -0/+0Common sense isn't it?
AC on - close doors and windows. Don't wash just one shirt in your washing machine...
WOW thanks! Don't forget this gem! Turn light off when leaving room! - jezze, on 06/30/2008, -0/+0I'm about to buy a new refrigerator.
Can somebody tell me what refrigerator brand should I buy?
What should I consider when selecting anew frig? -
