- Aitese, on 06/29/2008, -1/+64I read Starship Troopers after watching the movie...couldn't believe they were even related. Felt guilty for liking the movie.
- ThatDustyGuy, on 06/30/2008, -1/+56I thought the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy movie really didn't do the book justice. It wasn't bad, just average.
- Kajico, on 06/30/2008, -1/+45I have to say Sphere should belong on that list. The book is fantastic, the mood and dialog present in the book just didn't work out at all as a movie.. Most of the elements that appeared in the book that brought out the characters' deep fears appeared really comical on screen. Any person that has had to sit through the film should go out and read the book and try and erase the movies boring pace and mediocre acting from out of their head.
- ghidorahnotweak, on 06/30/2008, -1/+41I love Dune the movie, but I agree that it wasn't a faithful adaptation of the book. Next I want the ten video games that shouldn't have become books. WHY ARE THERE HALO BOOKS? WHY?
- meandnips, on 06/29/2008, -1/+36I liked Dune (the movie, the SciFi mini series not so much. Jessica was a let down after Francesca Annis) and I also liked V for Vendetta, too. Lots of movies are let downs after books, because you get a sense in your mind of how people/ places look and so forth, and the movie can't live up to it.
- Tamriel, on 06/30/2008, -5/+41Did you really just censor the word sucked? *****, dude. You can say sucks on the ***** radio.
- ZutroyZuuts, on 06/30/2008, -0/+29In order to make a Dune movie that would be on equal footing with the book, 3 hours would not be enough. It would've had a running time of 3 months. I think a lot of people misunderstand the Dune series. Though it has a a Science Fiction facade, it's really a very deep, cerebral political thriller.
But Kudos to the movie because that's what got me into Frank Herbert in the first place. - erad222, on 06/30/2008, -3/+30V for Vendetta? Really? Also, Starship Troopers is so hilariously cheesy that you just have to like it.
- lukasmack, on 06/30/2008, -1/+28I am legend?
- covertbadger, on 06/30/2008, -1/+23Um, whilst I agree with you that Forever War is a great book, Starship Troopers came out 14 years EARLIER, so I really don't think ST stole too much material from FW...

- cquinnd, on 06/30/2008, -1/+21I don't know if I would say "better", but 2001: A Space Odyssey had a fairly close race between the book and the film.
- Kajico, on 06/30/2008, -0/+19That's because the film and novel were both under production at the same time, and used the earlier script developed by Kubrick and Clarke as the source material.
- quirkie, on 06/29/2008, -23/+4210 nice Sci-Fi movies you can watch without reading the book......
Yes, I admit, "I, Robot" the movie s*cked if you compare it to the brilliant short stories written by Azimov, "V for Vendetta" is quite nice for a comic adaptation (although the original story is better). And if you watch the "Starship Troopers" movie carefully you will find a lot of anti-fascism / anti-war references.
And what the heck is wrong with "Dune" by David Lynch? Did you ever watch any other Lynch movie? This Lynch movie is pretty easy to understand.
P.S. please Digg people: stop submitting / digging "top 10 stories", I'm tired if top 10 submissions. Digg / Do something original. Stop following the herd. - 360news, on 06/30/2008, -0/+15I read and re-read all the Frank Herbet books, but not all the 'House' books yet, and I think that Dune is impossible to make into a reasonable screenplay because much of the action is actually internal dialogue / thought. I have seen the film and mini-series, but whilst well produced, they werent really true to the original first book.
Dune is about abomination controling human evolution for the (long term) better good, seen through the eyes of various participants over thousands of years. - xDynaBlade, on 06/30/2008, -0/+14What about I Am Legend? The book was so much more intense and the movie was only loosely related.
- Fleagleman, on 06/30/2008, -0/+14Digg.
The website of:
1. Whatever top 10 list hasn't been done yet (and even some that have, but worded differently).
2. posting of xkcd comics.
3. posting of "The Onion" articles.
4. Obama/McCain
Rinse and repeat for following day. - ericdano, on 06/30/2008, -0/+13They should NEVER think of making the Foundation series into a movie. Ever.........EVER.
- mrloci, on 06/30/2008, -2/+15name me 10 books that were better off on film. bet you can't think of one.
i loved the dune books and i loved the film but it was never going to match/better the books. - StultusJuventus, on 06/30/2008, -0/+13Felt the same way about Timeline.
- br0ck, on 06/30/2008, -1/+14How about Shawshank Redemption, The Green Mile, The Shining, Jurassic Park, Johnny Mnemonic (the Gibson short was only a very, very short story), Godfather, Children of Men, Fight Club (book is ok, but very short and not fleshed out at all), Blade Runner, and Trainspotting (the book was great but nearly indecipherable - click 'excert' at the left of this link and keep clicking next page on the right a few times if you don't believe me - nsfw? - http://www.amazon.com/gp/reader/0393314804/ref=sib ... )?
- sfacets, on 06/30/2008, -8/+20iRobot wasn't an adaptation, it was lightly based on a few Isaac Asimov books.
Also Will Smith is a frikkin Scientologist. - MnoruS, on 06/30/2008, -0/+12In advance, I'd list 'Watchmen' in there. There is no way it's going to do justice to the book. PROVE ME WRONG!
- clkleebe, on 06/30/2008, -5/+17How did Hitchhiker's Guide not make this list? ***** awful
- chilidbz, on 06/30/2008, -5/+17Where was Hitchiker's Guide?
- bluehouse, on 06/30/2008, -0/+12It's also about the dangers of knowing the future and the dangers of putting all your eggs in one basket. The fight for spice can be seen as a parallel to the oil problems we've had for decades. One resource we all need controlled by relatively small number of people can lead to some serious *****
- HoratioHellpop, on 06/30/2008, -3/+15Who writes these titles? Shouldn't it be:
10 Sci-Fi Films That Were Better Off on Paper - IphtashuFitz, on 06/30/2008, -0/+11Yeah, the movie Jurassic Park was better than the book....
"It's a UNIX system! I know this!"
Enough said... - Angelspit, on 06/30/2008, -0/+11The second one was straight-to-DVD.
- Diggnabbit, on 06/30/2008, -0/+10iRobot is future Apple invention that will drive Digg mad.
"I, Robot" was a movie. - eleven, on 06/30/2008, -0/+9Oh, if I could digg your comment more than once. If anyone out there has not read the I Am Legend book and only seen the movie get your asses to the book store. Great novella, ***** hollywood movie.
- kraetos, on 06/30/2008, -0/+9I think he meant the movie stole from FW.
I can see that. But I still think the movie is stupid. They would have been a lot better off just coming up with an original plot, because it was just a frame tale for some bug-killing special effects. And one of the greatest literary pieces of all time doesn't deserve to be reduced to a frame tale. - inactive, on 06/30/2008, -0/+9Agreed. It would be 20 hours long and nobody would get it.
- SOS84, on 06/30/2008, -6/+15This list is pretty stupid. While it left a ton of material on the floor, V for Vendetta was still a great film and as good as an adaption as could be made. As for Starship Troopers, the movie actually surpassed the book simply because it mocked Heinlein's belligerent pro-fascist agenda presented in the Novel. The film is a true classic in every sense.
- elperegrino, on 06/30/2008, -2/+11Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? I have a love/hate with PK Dick, and Blade Runner hasn't got much to do with the novel. But it's much better.
- kpwells, on 06/30/2008, -0/+9I agree 100%. Dune was a great cult classic. If you buy the dvd it has an unedited longer version that runs over 4 hours. It does a much better job of explaining things, but is a little too much to handle if one hasn't read the book.
The knife fight between Paul and Feyd (sting) at the end? Amazing. - inactive, on 06/30/2008, -1/+10The Godfather
- gregcotten, on 06/30/2008, -0/+8Scientology kills its members, that's why. Don't you use digg?
- AgentX640, on 06/30/2008, -6/+14I stopped reading at V for Vendetta.
- lordtyros, on 06/30/2008, -0/+8Because idiots will buy anything
- OzzieAlThor, on 06/30/2008, -0/+8I offer The Dark Tower as a series that will eventually be on this list.
You just know they're going to goof it up. - inactive, on 06/30/2008, -4/+12Nothing on this list is a bigger crime than Starship Troopers.
- anillop, on 06/30/2008, -3/+10Why the hell do you even care what will Smiths religion might be. What does that have to do with anything?
- BigW, on 06/30/2008, -0/+7Actually the interface shown is a three-D file visualizer running on ..... SGI IRIX which is an implementation of UNIX, so actually that comment is correct.
- postalblowfish7, on 06/30/2008, -5/+12DUNE is ***** phenomenal! enigmatic, eerie, haunting, beautiful - it's a ***** 80's sci-fi lynchian masterpiece!
- Catbert107, on 06/30/2008, -1/+8Or maybe people enjoy reading them? you seemed to enjoy it enough to make a detailed comment
- ZimbuTheMonkey, on 06/30/2008, -1/+8Another vote for The Godfather. Coppola's directing is far superior to Puzo's writing, which I found to be unrefined and boring. Not only that, but Coppola added completely original material that fit perfectly in the storyline.
What you say? What about Godfather Part III? I've never heard of this movie. LALALALALALALALALALALALALA! I'M NOT LISTEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEENING... - Diggnabbit, on 06/30/2008, -0/+6Jaws.
- MCA2142, on 06/30/2008, -1/+7Another one that should be on the list - Sphere by Crichton
