- pf101, on 05/28/2008, -1/+8Wow. What a sad outlook on life. Yesterday I gave a slice of pizza to a homeless guy. Did I change the world? Nope. But I changed his day and that's a step in the right direction.
People do little things every day that add to the greater good. And yes, many times their actions are motivated by selfishness - but does that make those actions bad or worthless? Is the company which donates $1M to charity doing evil just because one of the results is them getting good PR? The money is still going to do good so who cares if the person giving it gets a PR/ego boost? Would it be better had they launched a $1M advertising campaign instead?
Look at the result, not the motivation.
And I strongly disagree with your theory that humans are intrinsically evil and rotten. Certainly there are some of both but in my experience they are in the minority. The problem is that the majority are apathetic and just don't try because they think that the small things they can do won't matter in the big scheme of things. - thewump, on 05/28/2008, -2/+9Personally, I think the US Military Complex is changing the world more than any other organization - but not in a good way.
- inactive, on 05/28/2008, -1/+6Good list.
It can be much or little, I do not know.
I only know that we are simply part of a change to begin - pf101, on 05/28/2008, -0/+5Did you scroll down? The first category is children (since that's what comes first alphabetically) but if you scroll down you'll see that there are also categories for: Civil Rights, Disabilities, Human Rights, Human Trafficking, GLBTQ, Women and General. The Children section isn't even the largest section.
- stanleyford, on 05/28/2008, -0/+5I know it's popular to hate on religion and all its manifestations, but I bet there's not a single town in the entire country which has not benefited in some way from a charity or community organization funded or organized from its local Catholic church.

Christian organization, but they do a lot of good.
I have a friend who works for them.
They have a 95% efficiency, which is incredible for non-profit organizations. People donate to pay for food, and volunteers come in to package. Packaging can actually be sort of fun, too... hah. - inactive, on 05/28/2008, -0/+5I don't see how Marlon Brando lookalikes are changing the world...
- pf101, on 05/28/2008, -1/+5Oh, there are WAY more than 106. :) This is just a start. Hopefully people will comment and add their own favorites.
- Alex2, on 05/28/2008, -0/+4Free Software Foundation.
- changing the tech world. - AManWithNoName, on 05/28/2008, -2/+6I like this list. Every day on Digg, we see a lot of articles about hate and war, and it's nice to see there's some good out there. :)
- wayneamartin, on 05/28/2008, -0/+4www.eff.org
- okpeery, on 05/28/2008, -1/+5Nice list, for me it would be more user friendly if it were broken down into smaller lists by category. Then you could eke out a few more blog posts too. But really the categorization would help.
- pf101, on 05/28/2008, -0/+3Good thinking!
- jdowland, on 05/28/2008, -1/+4I think this is a great list of resources for people who want to help make the world a better place but who don't know where to start.
- tian2992, on 05/28/2008, -0/+2In the Internal war at Guatemala, The Catholic Church has played a very important role, on both sides, They did not stood on the way of the Coup at 1954, but they lead the "Comisión de esclarecimiento Historico", which is dedicated to investigate the millions of human rights violations made during the war; also at rural areas they have supported the people whose family was massacred and the separated families, and the immigrants who went to Mexico or US because all of their families were killed or their villages destroyed…
To any one who thinks that Churches are "bad, and are the cause of all evils",
Think about this, There have been terrible things that the Churches did, and continue to do, but there have been great and good things too.
Father Gerardi, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Juan_José_Gerardi_Con ... , was a great defender for human rights, we commemorated his death anniversary this april. - malex, on 05/28/2008, -0/+2Man, I am so grateful not to be you.
- pencilneck, on 05/28/2008, -0/+2And how is PETA and Green Peace saving the planet? Do you think the planet is already doomed? Do you think the planet is static, the climate should never change?
- Cattywampus, on 05/28/2008, -0/+2A good Web site to see how charities measure up is www.charitynavigator.org. They rate charities based on a number of criteria like how much of their money actually goes to programs, overhead, etc., and how they compare to other charities in the same field (food relief, animal welfare, etc.)
- pf101, on 05/28/2008, -0/+2From the post:
"NOTE:...I fully admit that this list tilts towards my personal interests so please feel free to recommend additional groups in the comments section and I’ll add them to the list." - Cattywampus, on 05/28/2008, -0/+2True, but the author clearly points out that the list is skewed toward her own personal interests. She doesn't claim that it's a comprehensive list covering every possible cause, problem, etc.
- erikmarcus, on 05/28/2008, -2/+4This list tells more about the author's priorities than it tells about what groups are really making a difference in the world.
For instance, there's not a single animal protection group. The Humane Society of the United States (HSUS) is leading a campaign that will outlaw, in California, three of the cruelest practices of factory farming (battery cages, veal crates, and gestation crates). HSUS definitely deserves a prominent place on a list like this. - xtinamo, on 05/28/2008, -0/+2"Yesterday I gave a slice of pizza to a homeless guy. Did I change the world? Nope. But I changed his day and that's a step in the right direction."
I think this would depend upon the toppings of said pizza because that hawaiian pineapple ham ***** seriously sucks. - Zipko, on 05/28/2008, -1/+2Scientology's having a pretty big effect to.
(I'll look like an idiot if they're actually on the list, but somehow I doubt it and I don't feel like checking) - pf101, on 05/28/2008, -0/+1From the post:
"NOTE:...I fully admit that this list tilts towards my personal interests so please feel free to recommend additional groups in the comments section and I’ll add them to the list." - ICSU, on 05/28/2008, -0/+1Where is the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, the largest transparently operated charitable foundation in the world?
- renemartini, on 05/28/2008, -0/+1I am involved in grass roots organization FOL(Friends of the Library) which helps promote and sponsor the local community library. Its a national organization and helps promote importance of reading.
- robbiemuffin, on 05/28/2008, -1/+20 organizations for water rights and just 1 organization for international poverty ... mmmm :(
- pencilneck, on 05/28/2008, -4/+5Digg for not having Green Peace or PETA.
- newstart, on 05/28/2008, -0/+1Lets leave it at "106". Its a auspicious number. 107 or more makes it look evil.
- smartcause, on 05/28/2008, -1/+2There are definitely a lot more than 106...but it's a lot of work to tell the good from the bad - Guidestar.org has a database of 1.7 million non-profit organizations. That's a lot of tax returns to read if you want to find out which organizations are really changing the world.
Dugg for them doing the work to find 106 good ones. - metaknite, on 05/28/2008, -0/+1I think Wal Mart is changing the world for the better.
- callinthelaw69, on 05/28/2008, -4/+5The Catholic Church is, sadly enough, still changing the world we live in continually.
- 333cale, on 05/28/2008, -2/+3http://www.freetibet.org/
- paulmer2003, on 05/28/2008, -0/+1I think the Kurds would disagree.
- Twenty, on 05/28/2008, -0/+1When you add it all up it evens out. The US Military is involved in many peacekeeping operations around the world. The War on Terrorism is horribly unfortunate. Really, the way it has gone on now, it brings a bad name to the military.
Also, think of all the defense contractors and lobby-funded government officials who are getting fat off their asses with war funding. That's pretty sick.
It all evens out, but it shouldn't. - robbiemuffin, on 05/31/2008, -0/+1jesus man buy an ISP that gives you access to wikipedia. not knowing what water rights is is like not having heard of "empowerment" or "social justice" ...
- eviljolly, on 05/28/2008, -0/+1Google is an organization. Maybe not non-profit, but they are definitely changing the world. I don't see them on this list though...
- MsAntiSunshine, on 05/28/2008, -0/+1Russ Berrie Foundation (non-profit for all kinds of charity and acts of kindness. Focuses mostly on education, the arts, and medical research including diabetes research and stem cell research)
Comedy Cures (brings comedy acts and support for the ill to heal through humor. Started by a woman who felt the healing effects of laughter while she had cancer.) - averity, on 05/28/2008, -0/+1Personal endorsement of Peace Brigades Int'l (PBI, #25 under Human Rights) -
I interned in the DC office, and they're a really great org. PBI volunteers function as unarmed bodyguards of threatened human rights activists. In its 27 years of existence, it has never lost a person...volunteer, nor activist. - Stonekeeper, on 05/28/2008, -0/+1Can't wait for the Top 10 list of 106 Organisations that are Changing the World.
- devoted, on 05/29/2008, -0/+1what about the UN? wait...they dont really influence
- inactive, on 05/28/2008, -0/+1Good list lacks environmental groups though:
http://www.earthfirstjournal.org/ - Michiko280, on 05/28/2008, -0/+1I recommend adding the HSUS (Humane Society of the United States) to the list!
I also recommend the SPCA ( www.spca.com )
Thanks! - locamama, on 05/28/2008, -0/+1http://www.tearfund.org/ - Christian relief fund to end global poverty, also disaster relief, current needs in Myanmar, China and Zimbabwe
www.heifer.org - ending hunger with gifts of livestock, so much more but it's hard to explain in one sentence, check the site out.
http://borderangels.org - preventing deaths at border with rescue stations along the border
www.modestneeds.org - prevent low income workers from entering cycle of poverty by providing small grants for expenses like heating bills, car repairs, doctor bills etc. - Bloody_Mess, on 05/29/2008, -0/+1This should have been included in the list:
www.humansunitedagainstrobots.com
HUAR was designed to educate and aware the citizenry of the world of the impending attack that computers and robots will put into effect against humans. - fairymunchkin, on 09/19/2008, -0/+1Footprints should also be on the list: http://www.footprintsnetwork.org
They created a charity API that collects micro donations (eg like $2) on e-commerce sites. This helps raise money to fund charitable projects. -
