Digg 2.0 Public Beta (48hr)
digg.com — We are pleased to announce the digg 2.0 public beta. For all the details and login information, please read the comments of this story.
- 674 diggs
- digg it
- quickness, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7Why only 48hrs?
The plan is to give everyone 48hrs to kick the tires and break things. After 48hrs we’ll take all of your bug reports and feedback, fix the problems, and then turn 2.0 live to the world within the next week or so. - quickness, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2
Why does the site look like Mozilla/Firefox?
The same design team that brought you the Mozilla and Firefox websites has also designed digg 2.0. - quickness, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2How do I submit bug reports?
The bug report feature is in the lower right hand corner. - quickness, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2Should I submit new stories just to digg 2.0?
Sure, but just for testing purposes. Any changes you make on the beta server will be wiped after the beta test has ended. Please help keep the main digg.com site alive by submitting new content. - quickness, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1New features?
In addition to the new design, many things have been rationalized and made more consistent. For example the item display and digg animation are consistent between the front pages, the digg areas, the search pages, and so on. Everywhere a story appears, there is a timestamp (a popular user request).
But there are also 2 new features - namely the ability to upload your own images to show other diggers what you look like, and a new "friends" section that will let you aggregrate and track your favorite users. - quickness, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2
How do I login?
http://beta.digg.com
un: betatest
pw: betatest
Then login as normal with your digg account. The database was transferred over early this morning so if you registered today you will have to reregister on the beta site. - h4lofourt33n, on 10/12/2007, -4/+1How do I beta test?
- quickness, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Enjoy!
- The digg team - 0perator, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1That un/pw isn't working.
- fourzerofour, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2Sweet
- 0perator, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Now it is.
- mutant, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Digg has been digged.. Get timeouts trying to connect. ;)
- iamhumble, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1first login into digg.com using your account and then go to beta.digg.com. the un/pw for beta digg will then work.
- dee-vee, on 10/12/2007, -4/+0Its slower than *****. id say it didnt pass the server load beta test!
- mutant, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1oh wow.. this is amazing, even if it is slow.
- a_greer, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1B-E-A-UTIFULL!!! tha is greart stuff, simple, easy on the eyes and so dymanic.
This blows the slashdot UI clean out of the water...lets just hope the real thing is a tad faster (lol Of cource it will be when the current servers are in tandom with the new ones!) - jestershinra, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2Slowest ***** site I've seen a while- but worth the wait!
- aprocter, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2Personally i think its really really fugly. I love digg, but that looks too .. whats the word ... *shrug* childlike? It's too bubbly and 'pretty.' gah.
- kris.mallory, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0isnt working
- kfstickman, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2I actually kind of miss having the home page button on the top. But it looks nice.
- xalen, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Looks great, but i think the whole thing would benefit from a background image of some sory, with all the text in a white zone of some sort in the middle of it.
Something like what's seen at http://www.tuaw.com/ but with a larger central frame. - kfstickman, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1love the reporting system "problem?"
- XtremeBug, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Yeah...I think the design looks a little ugly as well. Honestly, I would love to just have the title bar for 2.0 put on the current design, and leave it like that, but oh well.
- snoopy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I hope there's a skinning option to keep the UI the same as it is in 2.0 as it is now. 2.0 is so gaudy. KISS
- scottwills, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Some initial thoughts:
1. Looks great! The new color palette works well yet the simplicity still
remains.
2. Is digg v2.0 Mozilla/Firefox only? There are some obvious issues in IE:
3. IE issue: The "problem?" drop-down is transparent and does not look good when it overlaps the article headline beneath it.
4. The items within the "problem?" dropdown are not clickable in IE. When the user tries to click on them, the drop-down disappears.
5. When you hover over a category link in IE, it disappears (or at least the hover-over is the same color as the page/background.)
6. There is no link allowing users to upload an "avatar" image.
7. "Search for stories" on the user profile page ought to be at the top of the page above the categories section (not below it.)
8. Navigation throughout the site is inconsistent. Navigation menu appears on the right on the home page and then switches to the left on sub pages -- usability studies show that consistent navigation location is important.
Just some beta observations that might like to be addressed. :)
I hope the site does not become Firefox only by the way -- 90% of all Web users still use IE whether Firefox is a better browser or not. - nickster, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2Don't like the advertisement, between the news stories I preferred it at the top of the page, like it is now.
- phishyJon, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1awesome! great work guys!
i personally like the new design, especially the comment bubbles and the user avatars. cant wait to see this released! - IraqManiac, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11 word: WOW and now more words: HOLY *****... anyways it loaded normally/instantly for me, but that's sweet... FULL of bugs but still this is awesome
- zdlatham, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1looks great. lookout tinfoil hat wearing slashdot crowd.
- kris.mallory, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1ok here are a few gripes i have. just some feed back, it's your site do with it what you like
1. all the titles font size are too big. exspecially where it now says "latest front page news" takes up way too much front page real estate, perhaps reduce it to the same sie as the sub cats.
2. google adsense in the story list, between stories....anoying. it's not news, shouldn't be there. it might make you some more revenue but it sacrifices site intergrety. why not just stick it at the top or leave it on the side.
3. The green text.. makes it look childish somehow. for some reason Digg 2.0 is reminding me of looknig at Windows XP default Start Bar with the green on blue. black with a blue roll over?
4. as someone else sugested perhaps frame it all in a differnt background color.
digg is a great site and the beta is looking pretty good. - dampjam, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I found a bug, when you put your mouse over the word in the dropdown, not the arrow, of the digg above an ad. It starts flashing like crazy for awhile.
- Elxx, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1If you don't give us an option to use this current style instead of that newfangled stuff, I'm going to shoot someone.
- gronne, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I for one really liked the simplicity of digg. The yellow picture showing how many diggs a story has gotten draws the eyes away from the title. I think this new digg isn't as easy to read. I hope they consider this.
- dazzed, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1This is nice looking, I like it a lot.
I just pray it will be faster, digg is slow enough already. - rawr, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1I like the current one ALOT more.
- IraqManiac, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1it's actually really full of bugs... there's like at least one on every page... and in some kind of warning message somewhere I discovered http://digg.com/digg/
- wxjunkie, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Because it will blow up after 48 hrs. Either that, or Kevin really likes 1980s Eddie Murphy.
- russell, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Amazing! Who designed this now? I would like to contact them for my website!
- jesusphreak, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Quite honestly, looks horrible. Has lost the simplicity that made Digg great, and the ads in the middle of the ads in the middle of the stories are a major turn-off.
I can see a lot of people not using Digg anymore because of the new layout. - Mexrocker, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I don't like the ads halfway through the page.... other that that it has some pretty nice features...
- CoSMoSYS, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2friggen sweet
- wxjunkie, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Some of these comments are really entertaining: "can see a lot of people not using Digg anymore because of the new layout."
I love the new layout personally. Adds some flair to the site. That guy must work for slashdot, where the technology and design are stuck in 1993. But I guess that's how Linux likes it. - reaver, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1This looks awesome.
- SoyFeo408, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I'm with Snoopy on this one.
Perhaps I haven't dug around on the new site long enough, but is there any new functionality here? 'Cuz if not, a lot of the redesign looks like pointless bloat to me. I get less information per square inch than I get now (due to background images and larger font sizes) and the new placement of the Google ads is more obtrusive (and thus less likely to get my click.) Don't get me wrong, no disrespect intended to the Firefox designers... I love the look of the Firefox site, but I like that look *on Firefox's site*.
Disclaimer: I tend to subscribe to the "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" school of web design. So I guess my question is this: unless this site redesign fixes some major interface or functionality flaw, why copy the Firefox layout?
And now for the positives (er, positive): I like the apparent ability to add user avatars. That's relatively cool. But other than that, I'd totally vote for keeping the current layout. - IraqManiac, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1if you read all the comments you will notice how like half the people love it and the other people think it looks bubbly-screwy, and I think a good idea would be to make it skinnable kind of like someone else said
- chymmylt, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Looks great - I'm sure the finished product will be amazin - keep up the good work guys!
- jesusphreak, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Yeah, Iraq, it does seem pretty hit and miss.
- beday00, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1The new version looks great. Here are my thoughts:
1. The google ads between the stories is really annoying, it was the first thing I noticed.
2. I was able to reproduce the drop down error in IE as mentioned above (IE version 6 sp2)
3. In Firefox the google ads flash off and then back on whenever I mouse over the problems? drop down box/menu (Firefox version 1.0.4)
4. When posting comments I prefer the layout of the original digg site with the username, timestamp, rate comment drop down menu, etc at the top of the posted message as opposed to digg v.2 with the information in the bottom right of each post
Great site in general though... keep up the good work! - Angmar, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Like the new features, but not the design.
- SpookyET, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1One thing that should change in Digg 2.0 is the number of diggs required for a story to appear on the front page. Currently, a lot of lame stories appear on the front page. The digg number should be 100 or more. However, it should be different for each category. Categories that have a lot of stories on the front page should have a higher digg number requirement. Categories that have a low number of stories on the front page should have a low digg number. However, both low and high should have a pretty big number in order to keep lame stories off the front page.
