Almost art? Would drawing a frame around it the photo make it art? - GawtMilk, on 10/12/2007, -18/+100Seriously, Paul.
"Almost art".
I work with a lot of stop motion work, and I can say that it is one of the hardest forms of photography. It is definately art -- you have a vision in mind of what the final photograph will look like, so you set up the photo accordingly using flashes and lights to remove shadows and bring out color. You set up backdrops, mirrors, umbrellas and slave flashes. Then you set up the materials, and either rig up sound / photogate triggers or just use a quick finger. Just because you set up the shot more then a landscape, it requires lots of photographic work and a vision in order to really make the photo work.
Stop being such an ass, babasave. - hannahmar, on 06/11/2009, -3/+47Do you not consider photography an art form? (I am just curious because, as per your description, you say it is 'almost like art')
- Modiga, on 10/12/2007, -5/+42"it requires lots of photographic work and a vision in order to really make the photo work."
That and a lot of coffee. - Jarodd, on 10/12/2007, -4/+40That is the most impressive photo of a drop of milk in coffee i have ever seen.
- ChzPlz, on 10/12/2007, -3/+39The description doesn't say video camera. I'm marking your comment as inaccurate. :)
- ldavid, on 10/12/2007, -5/+32Awesome snapshot!
**runs off to get a new coffee** - alen3K, on 10/12/2007, -0/+24Damn. This is why I love DiGG. Usually if you read all the comments you find something even more interesting then the actual submission.
- brlittle, on 10/12/2007, -4/+24"amost art" indeed.
Looks like art to me. - Domza, on 10/12/2007, -1/+20High Res version for widesreen background any one?
- MajorSmall, on 10/12/2007, -0/+15If you like this, you should see some of Martin Waugh's work:

Stop Motion photography is completely different from what this is. This is high-speed photography. Stop motion is stichting together a series of photographs that are very nearly similar to make it look like its a moving picture. Anyone remember the old Godzilla films? Godzilla was usually 'filmed' in stop motion. This is also how claymation is done. Just FYI.
But youre right in that High Speed photography takes a lot of prep and lighting, etc. - babasave, on 10/12/2007, -1/+14sorry if right but I've done a search before and haven't seen anything
- SEMW, on 10/12/2007, -0/+13chewyrunt, you're right that if something merely portrays rather than interprets reality then it's not art -- but the entire point about a good photograph is that it IS an interpretation. In choosing the focal length, the film type, the lens, the shutter speed, the aperture; not to mention in the process of making the print, the photographer is inexiorably marking his interpretation of reality. There is no 'natural' set of settings in which a scene is neutrally portrayed; a photo taken with a short shutter speed will have a very different effect to that taken with a long one, just as the size of paintbrush will have an effect on a painting. Photography IS interpretation, and is thus most definitely art in every sense of the word.
- Crass22, on 10/12/2007, -3/+16Lol the website is called "dpchallenge.com"
- BerenTW, on 10/12/2007, -0/+12Here in the guys website with more pics... can't see any wall papers there though :(

"My first instinct is to join that site and get into the fray of things on the thread ;-) To tell some of them how wrong they are in their assumptions: It is not a stopped video clip, there are no backdrops, mirrors, umbrellas, no sound/photogate triggers etc.....and to tell them I'm not a "poor girl" because I use a Tamron 90 mm macro ;-)) "
guess shes talking about you, gawtmilk. atleast partly.
you're right though, this is ofcourse art. it is absurd to suggest otherwise. - georgiecasey, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11http://www.duggmirror.com
- babasave, on 10/12/2007, -2/+13ur right it's art. just wanted to say that it's not just high speed imagery and close up /done great technically/ its got a very unique beauty.
- Autrix, on 10/12/2007, -2/+12^^scoyndizzle beat me to it
Photography is art. Ansel Adams must be spinning in his shutterbox. - OpenFuture, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11mmmmmm, doughnuts
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9mmmmm, symmetry
- thomashallock, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9I would like a high resolution version of this for my desktop. Oh well.
- leoedin, on 10/12/2007, -3/+11why? The Tamron 90mm macro is one of the best in that price range. Just because it's third party doesn't mean it's bad.
- JorgeGT, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Man, we really need a /sarcasm tag or something!
I use a 28-105 zoom as macro! - selrahc, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Photojournalism(although there are exceptions here) and snapshots aren't really art... but many forms of photography are...
- kevinarth, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7I'm not a photographer and I barely know what end to point at the subject, but I'm chiming in anyway.
Coffee with milk in it isn't art... What that photographer did in order to capture that shot the way it is...That's art.
Again, I can't even appreciate what it took to make that photo happen. With the amount of expertise it took to pull this off, we have no right to call it anything but art. - Landonr, on 06/30/2008, -4/+9Is there a higher resolution picture, I want to frame this.
- cpbrown, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6did no-one pick up on the sarcasm?
- jonathantneal, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4@Nar1117 and @dinoignacio,
Yes, this digg is not a clip of any Stop Animation, and neither was Godzilla. This digg is a frame from High Speed Photography. 'King Kong Vs. Godzilla', 'Godzilla Vs. Biollante' and 'Godzilla Vs. Destroyer' employed the use of some Stop Animation, but the majority of the effects work in Godzilla films was done using the process of Suitmation.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Suitmation - skunkman62, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4@chewyrunt - "Many people (myself included) do not consider photography an art form, regardless of how sublime the subject."
i worked at an art museum for 4 years. i saw numerous exhibitions of photography, art magazines showed photos, art auction houses had photos listed and art schools had many photography courses. so who are the many people that dont consider photography as an art form? you and your pretentious group of friends? asshat - Savut, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I wonder if a drop of something else will make another form ? It look like the drop just bounced back and create a damn beautiful flower. Chemistry and physic of elements make such natural beauty possible.
- rachelct, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3@ beren
since when is irene a guy? - GamerGeorge, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Very cool.
- BerenTW, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3since i didn't actually pay attention. :)
- nickels, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3DPChallenge is a great site, but be warned... If you join and submit your photography be prepared for some very low scores and very harsh criticism. If you have thick skin and love photography like me, then it is a very fun and creative site. Just don't expect people to love your pictures as much as you think they might.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3how are those little blobs around milk formed?
- samstafford, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3well. walt disney studios produced hundreds of great animation cels of water drops just like this, when they were working on bambi, I believe. you can still find them in attics and boxes.
- JohnC86, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4I like these photography links, don't look at them if you consider it spam!
- nofxjunkee, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4"OK, 3rd time this site has been highlighted in the last day, SPAM!"
And yet it is the first one I have seen. Clearly there are a lot of interesting things on that site, eh? - funkspiel, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Everywhere I go, I see shrooms.
- TravisG5, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3This image really highlights the wonders of digital photography. If the photographer used a film camera to do this, it probably would have costed hundreds of dollars just to shoot it (for the price of film).
Beautiful image (and great art too)! - vagarach, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Brilliant link you posted there! thanks!
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2hm they may be 'antibubbles' but how..
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Thanks for introducing me to a great site. That Pink Floyd competition looks great.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1wait a min, a perfectly realistic photo isn't necessarily art. could be just rare. i mean, if the phenomenon could be photographed with any kind of camera right outside your window would you say 'certainly' art? rare photo yes, art, perhaps.
i'd consider it art if the taker thought about it artistically. if he just photographed various crap randomly and got this by chance, no. - nickels, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Photos taken with a decent digital camera have hidden EXIF information on the file. This EXIF info is used to authenticate the images are original and not touched-up. You can use readers like this one:
http://www.photo-freeware.net/exif-reader.php
It's actually pretty cool all of the info that is stored with the images. You can get the shutter speed, aperature, focal length... the list goes on and on - torindkflt, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I may not be a coffee drinker, but I still think this is a neat picture. It looks a little bit like some kind of exotic mushroom.
- qsucvatz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Me too dude, me too.
- appleswitch, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1It's a fantastic site with amazing images, I joined a few months back just to get the email newsletter of the winners for each challendge and It will blow you away every time, I'm glad digg found the site, hopefully we will finally get that images section ;-)
