- PBMainiac3, on 01/21/2009, -0/+5512345: Schenectady. NY.
I believe it would certainly be easier to say "I'm from 12345." than "I am from Schenecandy, New York." - WootZoot, on 01/22/2009, -2/+36Somebody show this guy some boobs.
- lynchjos, on 01/21/2009, -1/+34Love it! I've always wondered about this. Excellent interactive map.
- BTConan, on 01/22/2009, -0/+25Yeah but then you miss out on the fun of saying "Schenectady."
Schenectady. - jury, on 01/22/2009, -0/+21I guess this interactive map was made in the future when hawaii was wiped from the face of earth for some odd reason because 96720 definitely isnt there.
Nonetheless very cool app - scully32, on 01/22/2009, -1/+19This is how Jack Bauer mails a letter.
- ch4os1337, on 01/22/2009, -0/+16Great now everybody knows the combination to my luggage.
- Khast, on 01/21/2009, -1/+15that is actually really cool!
- Ghostalker, on 01/22/2009, -0/+12Nobody ever admits they're from Schenectady, NY though. We always say one of the neighboring towns, or Albany.

- vulpescry, on 01/22/2009, -0/+11Kudos to the creator. I really enjoyed seeing how it they are all organized. Well done.
- suttin, on 01/21/2009, -0/+10I wish they did zip + 4. You would be able to get down to a subdivision in some places.
- BitKid, on 01/22/2009, -0/+8But there's no Hawaii or Alaska on here.
- Sccatter, on 01/21/2009, -1/+9Surprisingly entertaining.
- badhabit, on 01/22/2009, -0/+5You can use z to zoom as you type in your zip code.
- gailkim, on 01/22/2009, -0/+5Type 666. It goes straight to the heart of the US. Seriously.
- doublefelix, on 01/21/2009, -1/+6That's also a pretty accurate representation of what it looks like to fly over the U.S. at night.
- inactive, on 01/22/2009, -0/+4That's how Vicki pronounces it.
- rukeypoo, on 01/22/2009, -3/+7This is the coolest thing I've ever seen.
- ldkronos, on 01/22/2009, -0/+4or you can just click the word zoom in the bottom right corner.
- bg2500, on 01/22/2009, -0/+4ska-NEK-ta-dee?
- Jrr6415sun, on 01/22/2009, -1/+5do area codes work in a similar way?
- heinzfischer, on 01/22/2009, -0/+4at rather high altitudes
- CsHitman, on 01/22/2009, -0/+4O,.. there's no 31337 zipcode...
- xmike07, on 01/22/2009, -1/+5The guy went to MIT, this kinda work should be expected.
- trpnblies7, on 01/22/2009, -0/+4Hmm...666 brings you to somewhere in Kansas. No surprise there, I suppose.
- SmthngOriginal, on 01/22/2009, -0/+386753...09
- monroe1200, on 01/22/2009, -0/+3Wayyyyy freaky!
- FXNGLAS, on 01/22/2009, -0/+3Freaky.
- inactive, on 01/22/2009, -0/+366601 also brings you there... Funny how those things work out.
- zyklon, on 01/22/2009, -1/+4Westboro Baptist Church, maybe?
EDIT: I just tried 66660-66669, and it looks like 66667 is the only one it accepts, which just HAPPENS to be Topeka, which is where the Westboro Baptist Church is now. Amazing. - ldkronos, on 01/22/2009, -0/+2It works on the regular number keys, but not the numeric key pad.
- MovieBlog, on 01/23/2009, -0/+2Actually not. Area codes were deliberately designed to not be tied closely to geographic areas. That was to prevent misdialing. The middle digit was original only 0 or 1, where 1 was reserved for more populous areas. But now with splits and overlays it has gotten totally mixed up. I'd personally like to see a map of area codes just to see how messy it really is.
Here's an example of how 20x is geographically dispersed:
201 NJ N New Jersey: Jersey City, Hackensack (see split 973, overlay 551)
202 DC Washington, D.C.
203 CT Connecticut: Fairfield County and New Haven County; Bridgeport, New Haven (see 860)
204 MB Canada: Manitoba
205 AL Central Alabama (including Birmingham; excludes the southeastern corner of Alabama and the deep south; see splits 256 and 334)
206 WA W Washington state: Seattle and Bainbridge Island (see splits 253, 360, 425; overlay 564)
207 ME Maine
208 ID Idaho
209 CA Cent. California: Stockton (see split 559) - Rippleeffect, on 01/22/2009, -0/+2It doesn't seem to really work right. My zipcode is NOT in nextdoor to downtown LA. I'm over an hour north.
- anaclagon, on 01/22/2009, -1/+3You know you can type in whatever just to see how the zip codes are organized.
- alfal, on 01/22/2009, -0/+212345 is actually the General Electric plant located in Schenectady NY. I used to work there, and certain web sites don't actually know how to handle this - some of them use 12345 as the testing zip code for their data (I can't remember them off the top of my head, but some of them were weather related sites).
- ilovegarnet, on 01/22/2009, -0/+290210
- lingotees, on 01/22/2009, -1/+2couldn't get it to work!
- SmthngOriginal, on 01/22/2009, -1/+2this is incredibly fascinating i just wish i knew more zip codes
- davebo27, on 01/23/2009, -0/+1Barney ND is 58008, aka boobs upside down.
coincedence? - etx313, on 01/22/2009, -0/+1Dugg for processing!
- suttin, on 01/22/2009, -1/+2Yes
- admdrew, on 01/22/2009, -1/+2Schenectady?
- ldkronos, on 01/22/2009, -1/+2It wouldn't help, since they can't even get the 5 zip totally accurate. My city has 2 zip codes...one for the northern half and one for the southern half. That map show the zip code for the southern half of my city as being northwest of the northern half zip code
- richter, on 01/22/2009, -0/+1Doesn't include Anchorage, AK either.
- kd1s, on 01/22/2009, -0/+1My city comprises 02901 through 02909. I live in 02909.
As small as the northeastern states are we've got a ton of zip codes because the system originated in the northeast. Just tap 0 and the entire section lights up.
In fact 02904 was the first turn-key automated processing facility in the country. - dragtre, on 01/22/2009, -0/+1The folks in Bernardston, MA have 01337. Lucky.
- WHVN, on 01/22/2009, -1/+1best thing i have seen today!!
- inactive, on 01/22/2009, -1/+1Works fine for me. Way cool!
