learn how to use your camera. - wasanasan, on 05/08/2009, -0/+2550mm F/1.8
- Insightful, on 05/08/2009, -2/+18Lame.
His advice:
* Choose a large aperture
* Select a low ISO
* Choose your shutter speed wisely
* Set white balance wisely
* Focus wisely
* Meter wisely (hint:spot)
Selecting the portrait mode on a P&S or a Canon 50D will pretty much do the above, too.
You think the Canon/Nikon engineers are sitting in their labs and think, hmmmm, this is our 218th digital camera that we have cranked out since 2000, what shall we set the portrait mode this time?
How about let's defy expectation by going with SMALL aperture, HIGH ISO, and something else altogether so hipsters bloggers like Darren Rowse can give basic photography tips online?
I am an amateur photogapher who spent way to much $$$ on too many lens - so while Rowse did not give the wrong advice per se, he advice is pretty much useless because if you'd care to follow all his advice, you likely already own a dSLR. - gaqua, on 05/08/2009, -0/+9Start with Hobos. Nothing says "artsy" like the dregs of society photographed in black and white in their natural urine-soaked environment.
Also, it makes you look like you give a *****.
And loose chicks flock to dudes who give a *****. - spacerobot, on 05/08/2009, -1/+6an easy (and cheap) way to make any portrait look "professional".
- CrimsonBlur, on 05/08/2009, -0/+4Whoosh!
- Nature1, on 05/08/2009, -0/+3It's called manual mode.
- ultrafez, on 05/08/2009, -1/+4You sound like you need a DSLR.
- gaqua, on 05/08/2009, -1/+4$99 lens and you look like you're know what you're doing with just a bit of experience.
Who cares about those fancy shmancy photography forums where people use nonsense words like "bokeh" and "dof", right? - CrimsonBlur, on 05/08/2009, -0/+3If you have the equipment and skills to shoot amazing portraits, it's really not hard to find pretty girls that need photos taken of them. If you can't get anyone to model for you, you probably aren't any good.
- escottberg, on 05/07/2009, -2/+4thing is so many point-and-shoots don't let you do anything but the scene settings -- that's why I like canons
- tacojohn48, on 05/08/2009, -1/+3I think simple tutorials like this are a good way to teach people more about their cameras. It really helps to break it down and doesn't read like a manual.
- spacerobot, on 05/08/2009, -1/+2I have the equipment and skills, but I'm lacking the pretty girls. I'll never be able to take good portraits.
- tacojohn48, on 05/08/2009, -0/+1I really like the Cannon S3IS which you can get pretty cheaply. It can be found on Amazon for about $220 and has a 12X optical zoom. It also takes decent video for a point and shoot camera. You can see a video sample I took using it at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I6j6Yk6pvuQ
- ultrafez, on 05/08/2009, -2/+3"dof" isn't a word, it's an acronym.
For those that don't know, DoF (or DOF) stands for Depth Of Field and refers to how much of the photograph is in focus at once. - tacojohn48, on 05/08/2009, -0/+1I will be spending next week working with a church that really does work that shows it cares. We will be feeding homeless in Los Angeles. I think I would feel weird taking a picture of someone in that situation. I was asked yesterday to bring my camera to take video to document the trip.
- YourMomsAnAnon, on 05/08/2009, -0/+1Love, love, love my f/1.8.
Although in response to gaqua, it takes more than a wide aperture to get a good picture. - reyoo30309, on 05/08/2009, -3/+4Dugg for hot asian chick
- themastersb, on 05/08/2009, -1/+2That's the type of comment AverageDigger would make.
- DrCalculus, on 05/08/2009, -0/+1I love this site and have been a member for almost a year (and have won the photo contests) but I wish they gave more technical details in their articles.
Like spot metering mode...I get what it is and I know how to use it but others don't. Where do I want to meter from when in spot meter mode? shadows, highlights, midtones? what is a good technique to make sure I hit that spot? When is median metering a better option? - JigokuNoTori, on 05/08/2009, -0/+0The Asian chick look slightly creepy.
- ivanalbright, on 05/08/2009, -0/+0decent general tips if you just got your DSLR
- trymene, on 05/08/2009, -0/+0No, AverageDigger would say something like, "Girls I know won't let me take pictures of them...not after the restraining order."
- secretsaucetv, on 05/07/2009, -4/+2great advice... thanks for the heads up!
- DahRecords, on 05/07/2009, -6/+1I'm all about art, anything to do with portraits I'm in
- scarlettletter, on 05/07/2009, -6/+1Yah, but you do need a very expensive camera!
- ileftfark, on 05/08/2009, -8/+3These comments suck, including this one.
- LAmandingo, on 05/07/2009, -6/+1Real cameras dont have "portrait" modes. If you want to take great pictures get a real camera and learn about setting your own aperture, shutter and ISO.
- RAEP, on 05/07/2009, -9/+1Full manual all the way niggazz. I'm a film guy.
