- strangewill, on 12/13/2008, -2/+61Business going under?
Step 1: Fire lead developers
Step 2: ???
Step 3: Profit! - Scaryclouds, on 12/13/2008, -4/+45Now his pay is as minimal as his design!
- huff51, on 12/13/2008, -1/+27maybe now that Oates is being laid off by flickr he can get together with Hall and plan a tour
- nphase, on 12/13/2008, -1/+25Something tells me Oates won't have trouble finding a job.
- inactive, on 12/13/2008, -8/+27Flickr is one of the most well designed (UIwise) large scale websites on the Web. Just because it doesn't have dropshadows, glass effects and the star burst does not mean it's not well designed. Anyway, if I were Google, I'd hire that guy immediately.
- typeset, on 01/28/2009, -2/+15designers always get f'd. Design is not an art execution. It is a functional build of a service or product. Designers don't just add color and pictures... so furious.
- tgc1, on 12/13/2008, -0/+12Step 1: Fire lead developers
Step 2: ???
Step 3: Profit!
Step 4: Oh, *****... - richirwin, on 12/13/2008, -3/+15Sad.
- moogog, on 12/13/2008, -5/+15You should probably know George is a she.
- ChrisLondon, on 12/13/2008, -0/+10What, you think because there were no swirls, aqua buttons or animated GIFs that Flickr didn't require a designer?
- beesaretasty, on 12/13/2008, -0/+9Apparently Yahoo is taking the Circuit City approach to trimming the costs. What could go wrong?
- ChromaVita, on 12/13/2008, -1/+9Why should he know that?
- protohiro, on 12/13/2008, -1/+8George is a woman. Also, George did not work as a designer and was a vested member of the founding team. She has more money than you. Further, george hadn't been a "designer" at flickr since the acquisition. She was a product manager. But facts are lame.
- cadmiumpaint, on 12/13/2008, -6/+12you've just illustrated the biggest difference between creatives and developers. Who cares if it looks good if it doesn't work? Who cares if its ugly but works great?
There is more to design than just being functional. It has to look good.
Although in Flickr's case i like that its neutral...it doesn't interfere with the work. - ibic, on 12/13/2008, -0/+6How much more can Yahoo! screw up?
- BZKyle, on 12/13/2008, -0/+6...about you.
- KanYaDigIT, on 12/13/2008, -0/+5Great, I also noticed they laid off half the emoticons on Yahoo Messenger, seriously it has gone to far this time.
- HorseloverFat8, on 12/13/2008, -0/+4No, it gradually evolved over millions of years through a process called natural selection.
- HigherLogic, on 12/13/2008, -2/+6There's a quote that I'm trying to think of but can't remember, and it says something like minimalism or simplicity is the hardest thing to achieve. Point is, a well designed site doesn't have to be pretty, flashy, and full of fluff. That's a common beginner's mistake (think graphic designer gone web). A well designed site is usable, functional, and accessible. It could be entirely text-based and still be extremely well designed.
- youarekloot, on 12/13/2008, -1/+4I've no clue why you're being dugg down for this.
- rpieszak, on 12/13/2008, -0/+3Am I missing something?
- doublefelix, on 12/13/2008, -3/+6That sounds like it was a pretty cushy gig for George.
- bbqsalad, on 12/13/2008, -0/+2Agreed, I think if Picasa could somehow get the flickr community behind it, it would be perfect. I REALLY like Picasa's features
- Daniel591992, on 12/13/2008, -0/+2They should've bought it and not made Picasa Web Albums. They both good, but Flickr actually has a community.
- richirwin, on 12/13/2008, -0/+2I agree. He needs to resign. Trying to sell a Senate seat is ridiculous.
- Tubal22, on 12/13/2008, -0/+2If Oates was one of the designers that was laid off, seems like that would make him one of their bottom designers. Wouldn't it?
- bbqsalad, on 12/13/2008, -0/+2Yahoo needs to die already, they have been worthless for so long now, Google should own Flickr
- Spoomeister, on 12/13/2008, -0/+2Mmm boy howdy, I'm sure these guys are glad they didn't get bought by MSFT.
'Cause then they would have been losing jobs, and not making money. - biggles266, on 12/13/2008, -0/+2maybe the new design person will finally allow an option to choose a black or grey page background.
- tyhen, on 12/13/2008, -0/+2noalarms, dont feed that troll fyngyrz. People like that still use PINE mail. Go figure.
- protohiro, on 12/13/2008, -1/+3Yahoo is a profitable company. The business is no where near going under. Ford is going under. Yahoo is just not sexy.
- UKsHaDoW, on 12/13/2008, -0/+2@cadmiumpaintcadmiumpaint
If you've been on a design course, you know they study modules like Visual Commication. The whole point of design is to make something usable, gets the point across, intuitive to use, easy to read(Good Colours and contrast), and good flow.
If you find solotion to all those problems, the side effect is a good looking design.
Get a book on Grid Systems Josef Müller-Brockmann, and book on typography. You will find most design is in the usabillity. - asahi99, on 12/13/2008, -0/+1He's a maneater
- aheram, on 12/13/2008, -1/+2George Oates was a zero-day employee. She (she is female) used to greet people all the time along with Caterina Fake (co-founder of Flickr) in Flickr Live back way then.
She was instrumental in Flickr Commons project, leading it at the helm. - Gareth321, on 12/13/2008, -0/+1There's another digg next to this one on the subject. He went all dyslexic on the posts.
- o3man, on 12/14/2008, -0/+1My forecast is pink pages with glitter glow...
- eltrev, on 12/13/2008, -0/+1Yes, and I think the saddest part is that George Oates will have a very difficult time finding another design gig.
- lunytunz42, on 12/13/2008, -0/+1this seems to be the way businesses are reacting everywhere. My employer just moved me to a bigger paper and laid off the rest of IT except for 1 guy and left him with 6 new jobs to make it easier on the advertising department as well as all of our IT jobs. wonder who is going to help them make it with their big push for online content.
- tehdave, on 12/13/2008, -0/+1pretty please
- greg9683, on 12/14/2008, -0/+1Google should pick them up for their Picasa team.
- bbqsalad, on 12/13/2008, -0/+1crack is whack
- shaba1, on 12/14/2008, -0/+1Yahoo! Mail is getting ***** and slow as hell lately
- drgmdp, on 12/14/2008, -0/+1i find picasa's lack of flickr functionality disturbing
- factotum218, on 12/14/2008, -0/+0They axed George? That was a lame thing to do. He'll find work I'm sure, but still yahoo is a poop head.
- nospaces2, on 01/21/2009, -0/+0girls In wet bikini http://girlsinwetbikini.pornlivenews.com/
drunk college girls video http://drunkcollegegirlsvideo.pornlivenews.com/
black ***** white chiks http://blackcockswhitechicks.pornlivenews.com/ - josejimenez, on 12/13/2008, -1/+1Could that be because the Flickr UI is somewhere between horrible and atrocious? I also find the UI to be almost unusable but I realize there are many Flickr fanboys who refuse to see Flickr's flaws and instead attempt to spin those negatives as virtues. Webshots has become a better Flickr than Flickr.
- kelchm, on 12/13/2008, -1/+0you are redundant.
- helloelan, on 12/13/2008, -2/+2It looks like you're being dugg down. I'm not sure why; I lolled heartily.
