Wow, YouTube Visualization Blatantly Copy Digg Swarm
newteevee.com — The bubble effect is similar to the Digg Swarm, only more fun. You have to hand it to YouTube, they may slack when it comes to copyright protection, but they are always ahead of their competitors when it comes to providing visual discovery.
- 841 diggs
- digg it
- adrian67, on 12/18/2007, -18/+9That's a serious RIP-OFF!
- ccheath, on 12/18/2007, -6/+2i've had this come up after one video (about two days ago maybe)
and that's exactly what i though...
though it didn't work as well as swarm does, imho- Kerrigore, on 12/18/2007, -1/+5I had it come up and it seriously annoyed me. It didn't work at all for what I wanted... every time I moused over a video to see what it was everything moved and expanded... and the names weren't very clear... I couldn't find what I wanted at all.
- mem2, on 12/18/2007, -3/+20Digg needs to wake up and realise their not the 1st at anything and stop crying stupid ***** like "slashdot copied digg" etc. Digg @ best is a composition of existing good ideas.
- zeeklancer, on 12/18/2007, -2/+4Dig and YouTube both copied somebody else's idea. swarms have been around sense the bees.
Nothing new here, move along.- tingrin87, on 12/18/2007, -0/+3and now you're being buried because you said something negative about digg!
BLASPHEMY!
- tingrin87, on 12/18/2007, -0/+3and now you're being buried because you said something negative about digg!

- Four20, on 12/18/2007, -19/+1I guess Digg's lawyers will be busy this holiday season. . .
- kidvitacus, on 12/18/2007, -2/+10Now, if they had little tv's bouncing around, or maybe buckets of popcorn, that would be cool.
- MikeonTV, on 12/18/2007, -2/+123Just like Google ripped off Lycos and McDonalds ripped off the caveman by using fire to cook it's burgers?
- Extraneous, on 12/18/2007, -10/+3LOL McDonald's cook with fire. HAHAH!!
- drizzlelicious, on 12/18/2007, -3/+19Lycos, now that's a name I haven't heard in years. Dang. Brings back memories.
- piesforyou, on 12/18/2007, -0/+3Bad ones.
- Hearron, on 12/18/2007, -13/+0Google's Moto: Copy the best, ***** the rest.
- kevinrose, on 12/18/2007, -9/+225I presented this idea to YouTube about 8 months ago (powered by Digg), they weren't interested at the time..
- ccheath, on 12/18/2007, -55/+2say what?!!?
can someone who i lawyer reply with some insights as to what this might mean?
i'm not sure if I should be upset about this or if it's just one of those well it's too general of a rip-off to be litigated and won
plus, who wants to sue google?- darkecho, on 12/18/2007, -0/+4Why would you need a lawyer? That means, anything created that is similar could get the creator sued. IE. All video portal sites, web browsers, desks, etc.
- ccheath, on 12/18/2007, -58/+2and kevin... please rush out the coments upgrades... i didn't get a chance to edit that last reply
first time for me that i've had a big problem with the comments
except for the 'refresh session' thing that a lot of people get - ccheath, on 12/18/2007, -54/+2oh this is gonna be funny... but upon reading that last one now the tone's a bit wrong and i didn't get a chance to edit it ... again...
so chop-chop digg dev team!!!
well if you refresh the page you lose your editing capabilities... it looks like that to me at least...
didn't you used to be able to refresh the page and still edit up until your 120 seconds was up?- TomPlansMedia, on 12/18/2007, -2/+36relax, dude
- dansmeek, on 12/18/2007, -2/+13did you happen to orgasm when you saw the comment you replied to?
- EmileVictor, on 12/18/2007, -8/+4What's your reaction to it? From the looks of what you've dugg on this page you don't seem all that worried.
- h4mx0r, on 12/18/2007, -6/+2I suppose Kevin might be delighted to know that he's helping to... 'improve the internet'. Heh
- mrfreeziexp, on 12/18/2007, -10/+6I think the ".." at the end of Kevin's comment says it all.
- Daniel591992, on 12/18/2007, -7/+5No. It says nothing at all..
- mem2, on 12/18/2007, -13/+3Sorry kevin but I doubt google would want you bloated code. Idea yes, implementation...no.
- ilikechaitea, on 12/18/2007, -1/+26hey...wasn't digg labs developed by an external company anyways??
- perot9296, on 12/18/2007, -0/+4 Silverorange made the flash stuff on digg, they also do a lot of design for Digg, mainly the look its had since v2.0
- Mononuclear, on 12/18/2007, -8/+4This idea is hardly original and didn't start with Digg
- evo8ftw, on 12/18/2007, -7/+2right... Talk about who ripped off whom here? It is kinda hard to call a way of relating things that has been in use for centuries an orignal idea just because it was put into electronic form alone. Wrap that up with the fact that I've seen various implementations of this same idea in various desktop and web applications. Then throw on top of that Swarm is located labs.digg.com but I am sure Google labs stole the cutesy name from digg as well. Come on, "presented this to Google 8 months ago" please.........
- dafragsta, on 12/18/2007, -0/+3Dude, it's the implementation. Someone above made the analogy that this was no more Google ripping off Lycos or McDonalds stealing the notino of cooking stuff. That's glossing over the distance between those things and how close these two products are. Granted, if there is no attempt to defend it, then I'd say Google wins fair and square. You don't see anyone claiming propriety over tag clouds or the mod up/down interfaces on StumbleUpon, Digg, and Reddit do you?
- ccheath, on 12/18/2007, -0/+2good point... that's kind of what i was thinking... too general of an idea to claim
- evo8ftw, on 12/18/2007, -1/+2Exactly my point. I guess I didn't get that across clearly I was trying to relate how asinine it would before digg to claim root to this as it would be for google to claim root to the "labs" tag.
- ccheath, on 12/18/2007, -0/+2good point... that's kind of what i was thinking... too general of an idea to claim

- xTRUMANx, on 12/18/2007, -5/+2I had no idea that the comment above was kevin's at first and was wondering why everyone believed the random digger's claim. After some investigation, I realized it was kevin's comment and my hours of detecting works was worth it.
- hedgiemaster, on 12/18/2007, -9/+2Hi Kevin
- Wisgary, on 12/18/2007, -19/+6Everyone, I implore you, digg this comment up. I want to take a picture for my children, and my children's children, saying "Here kids... this is a non-photoshop actual real image of me being positively dugg on a comment reply to none other than KEVIN ROSE". It will be the proudest moment of my digging life.
- dafragsta, on 12/18/2007, -1/+10I spy a fanboy with a glint in his eye not seen since I last watched Misery.
/he's your #1 fan Kev.
- dafragsta, on 12/18/2007, -1/+10I spy a fanboy with a glint in his eye not seen since I last watched Misery.
- sapo916, on 12/18/2007, -2/+9I am your son, you have neglected me all these years :(.
- perot9296, on 12/18/2007, -0/+2They didnt want to give Digg the backlinks, thats why they werent interested.
- ccheath, on 12/18/2007, -55/+2say what?!!?
- corevette, on 12/18/2007, -1/+4honestly, it looks like digg swarm, but acts differently
- Daniel591992, on 12/18/2007, -3/+24and doesn't say Ron Paul all over it.
- Kerrigore, on 12/18/2007, -1/+1Shh, don't give them ideas.
- ccheath, on 12/18/2007, -1/+1ever been to youtube?
- Daniel591992, on 12/18/2007, -3/+24and doesn't say Ron Paul all over it.
- maretten, on 12/18/2007, -11/+6What a SILLY PENIS!!!!
- Vizon, on 12/18/2007, -3/+2LOL
- h4mx0r, on 12/18/2007, -1/+3I noticed this last night but I dismissed it as maybe something I missed for a while.
- timbro1, on 12/18/2007, -3/+3CAREFACE
- CraigMacrae, on 12/18/2007, -2/+7So?
- RadiantBeing, on 12/18/2007, -3/+53Oh noes, now both companies have a useless visualization system.
- WatchDogX, on 12/18/2007, -0/+4HaHa, exactly what i was thinking.
- Kerrigore, on 12/18/2007, -0/+2Agreed. This is less functional than what youtube was using before... they need to make it only come up when you hit the button for it and not by default when you finish a video.
- Shenaniganz08, on 12/18/2007, -0/+1so thats what that new button does... hmm never knew
- sabarsky, on 12/18/2007, -2/+39wow you guys actually think that digg was the first site to ever visually display aggregated dynamic data in clusters?
- CaviMike, on 12/18/2007, -0/+7A lot of long words there, we're naught but humble pirates.
- scruffles, on 12/18/2007, -0/+1Here's a link for those who do like to read: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Social_network
Social Network charts aren't quite as ubiquitous as pie charts or bar charts, but Digg certainly didn't invent them.

- CaviMike, on 12/18/2007, -0/+7A lot of long words there, we're naught but humble pirates.
- halifaxboy, on 12/18/2007, -1/+5digg version is prettier.
youtube version is WAY more useful! - Typhoon2009, on 12/18/2007, -4/+26If Digg wants to one-up Youtube, they should FIX THE GOD DAMNED COMMENTS SYSTEM.
- Kalakov, on 12/18/2007, -3/+1I didn't even knew about "Swarm" must say the digg version is a pretty cuul, using it as a screensaver now.
- Skootles, on 12/18/2007, -2/+2Youtube version is just annoying. I tried to play videos and it would explode on me, then I'd lose the video I was going to watch. Seriously, there was nothing wrong with the old way of displaying related videos.
- ilikechaitea, on 12/18/2007, -0/+13digg labs wasn't even developed by digg....so its not really 'theirs' anyways....
- dildoolielly, on 12/18/2007, -1/+9Digg, don't be so quick to pat yourself on the back. Those same search node algorithms and effects have been developed in Flash(TM) waaaay before Digg ever hit the scene.
Calling the kettle black if you ask me.- ccheath, on 12/18/2007, -2/+1ah.. so it's built into flash?
interesting
- ccheath, on 12/18/2007, -2/+1ah.. so it's built into flash?
- winnch, on 12/18/2007, -2/+3And it's just as useless.
- thenewkasanova, on 12/18/2007, -1/+1I wasn't logged in and I navigated to one of those "marked as innapropriate" videos, and I was able to watch it without getting any warning. When I clicked out of fullscreen, I got the familiar warning though.
- isntreal, on 12/18/2007, -1/+3It would be nice if this guy actually included a link to it in his article.
- Mononuclear, on 12/18/2007, -0/+5Digg was not the first to come up with something like this.
- whitey9, on 12/18/2007, -0/+5I also heard that youtube instituted comments after digg invented them.
- schavira, on 12/18/2007, -4/+2I don't give a *****. When trying to watch something in full screen every like minute or so it pops up and bugs the ***** out of me. For those reasons, I hate it already.
- Auxon, on 12/18/2007, -2/+1It's not the same thing ... Digg Swarm shows users digging things, the YouTube version just shows other videos that are similar. Personally I think it sucks, because you can't turn it off, and the pictures are way too small to see what's what, it much less useful than the ordinary interface, which I can't seem to get back to, no matter what I do. I guess I have to clear my cookies or something else.
- iamaelephant, on 12/18/2007, -1/+2Um, ok. So what is Digg Swarm?
- sapo916, on 12/18/2007, -2/+1YouTube stealz my cookies :(.
- Aindrea, on 12/18/2007, -1/+1It's annoying, that's what it is.
- supermanred, on 12/18/2007, -1/+1I posted this in another thread, I also mentioned the fact that their icon is the Brain Interactive Construct (BRAINIAC) symbol from Superman comic books.
Tsk Tsk! - etx313, on 12/18/2007, -0/+2Yeah they stole the idea of playing videos on the internet too. Get real people.
- MrViklund, on 12/18/2007, -1/+1Yea well. Not copy but I guess they got inspired. But who cares? Really? :)
- Iccanui, on 12/18/2007, -0/+2Ehh, sorry but this kinda tech isnt new to the world and digg is not the first to use it. I have a visual thesaurus that using the same linking tech. Its a style thats been around for years and its kinda reflection of the human thought process. All digg did adapt it to its business model and google is doing the same. I mean getting mad at google for using this is like saying rock is worthless cause it takes from the blues. Its all evolution people.
- zephris, on 12/18/2007, -1/+1So I guess Kartoo stole it from digg too? Pulease, digg isn't the first to come up with that kind of style.
- lanus, on 12/18/2007, -1/+0oop, I also thougt about new digg visualization ideas - but I'm too late ...
http://blog.serpland.com/internet/im-too-late-thou ... - moonmoon1, on 02/13/2008, -0/+0Youtube version is just annoying
- lolo2007, on 02/19/2008, -0/+0Youtube version is just annoying. I tried to play videos and it would explode on me, then I'd lose the video I was going to watch. Seriously, there was nothing wrong with the old way of displaying related videos.
http://download.paramegsoft.com/ - max0211, on 06/11/2008, -0/+0YouTubeRobot.com today announces YouTube Robot 2.0, a tool that enables you to download video from YouTube.com onto your PC, convert it to various formats to watch it when you are on the road on mobile devices like mobile phone, iPod, iPhone, Pocket PC, PSP, or Zune.
YouTube Robot allows you to search for videos using keywords or browse video by category, author, channel, language, tags, etc. When you find something noteworthy, you can preview the video right in YouTube Robot and then download it onto the hard disk drive. The speed, at which you will be downloading, is very high: up to 5 times faster than other software when you download a single file and up to 4 times faster when you download multiple files at a time.
