- iNunchuk, on 10/11/2007, -0/+7Just outta curiosity, does anyone have a video of this in action?
- WayneMan, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5"Why air muscles?" you ask...
For better air guitar skilz, of course! - convergent, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5Let's hope that it doesn't glitch or something and squeezes too hard...
- rianDOTca, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4finally! I was getting so tired of picking up raw eggs myself all the time.
- TheGreatGabbo, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4What is it with the Japanese and creating life-like robots? I mean geez, are they trying as hard as they can to make "Ghost in the Shell" a reality?
- RonPaulPres2008, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4I sure hope so.
- OBKenobi, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3There's nothing funny about severing people's hands with a lightsaber.
- yournamehere, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3unangst ,
Please tell me that was a joke as it shows a prototype that he manually controls the hand with. the real one would be controlled by a chip. - unangst, on 10/11/2007, -2/+4The photo shows that you'll need your real hand to flip the 7 switches to control your air hand.
I think I'd spring for a hook instead... - inactive, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2i second that... i rather be immortal living inside a robot that can do things humans can only dream of

- PurpleDingo, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2If I lost my arm I would want the prosthetic to have at least six fingers. And the power to crush dreams.
- rwhiffen, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Dude A: PSSSST!
Dude B: What?
Dude A: Nothing, just blew a muscle.
Like FeelMyApathy said: http://www.shadowrobot.com/hand/ has better stuff about it.
A while ago a fellow by the name of Chris Maker had a good site. It seems to be gone now, but the way back machine has it:
http://web.archive.org/web/*/http://mapage.noos.fr/chrismaker/air-muscle.htm
Has some of the pictures on how the muscles work, etc. Good stuff... - OBKenobi, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2You'll only become a master of evil and Natalie Portman won't like you anymore.
- FeelMyApathy, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2It's worth noting that air muscles (or McKibben muscles) aren't exactly new (nor is using them for human hand replacements, like this one http://www.shadowrobot.com/hand/ .) I think they have a lot of potential. They're simple, easy to make (my 10 year old son and I made one for experimenting with) and incredibly strong and durable. The problems come more from the air supply and control hardware (compressors are bulky, loud and have to run off another power source. Valve blocks are kinda bulky as well.) Would love to see this technology explored more though.
- maxhrk, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3dont fappin too hard or otherwise it will.. pop.. or something worst :)
- RonPaulPres2008, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2^Not to mention the fact that there's always your OPPOSITE hand to flip the switches in MOST cases.
- IllBeBack, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2If someone "looses" their hand? How does one make one's hand loose? It does not unscrew so can't get loose.
- cyranthus, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1some die hard star wars fan is going to cut off one of his hands just to get this
- vanza001, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Not to mention the air tank to run pressure to the damn muscles.
- EXreaction, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2Just think of all the future use for something like this though!
Full bodied prosthetics, or appendage replacements for people. If someone looses their hand for some reason, this artificial hand can be placed at the end of their stump with a connection to the old nerves, from which a person can move their fake hand like they could move their old real one. - vcleniuk, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Good, I can start making my own Darth Vader replacement body now...
Muuhahahahha... - slypr, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1There is nothing funny about a one eyed bunny
- OBKenobi, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1He might have invented "air muscles" but he doesn't know the meaning of the word PNEUMATIC! :p
- Rcdriver, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Only if it's a clown.
