drzeus, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4You assume that I want payment for this application. I probably would have built it, or something like it, even if there were no contest. I released the source code for it on my blog a couple weeks ago, under an MIT license (which basically means ANYONE can use it for free) because I like to do this sort of thing for fun. Seeing as the whole world can play with my code, by becoming a finalist in this contest, I've receive more compensation that I would have if there were no contest.

drzeus, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3Thanks for the feedback, deadowl. I plan to create a search box to filter keywords in the list for my next version. In regards to overlapping keywords, I purposefully hacked the separation algorithm with smaller node sizes because they would often float off-screen when I used the real dimensions of the words in the calculations. I believe the aesthetics and improved usability outweigh the minor inconvenience of a few words that slightly overlap other words.

drzeus, on 10/11/2007, -2/+4It's based on a hundred stories. Sometimes words that seem like they would be popular aren't on there. If the API would have let me use a bigger result set, it might have helped, but hundred stories still gives the app some interesting relationships to map.

For some good examples, see the Apple subtopic and the US Elections 2008 subtopic. Both make some very interesting graphs.
