- SteelFrog, on 10/12/2007, -2/+127...No, the title doesn't speak for itself. However, the following quote has some highlights from the article:
"1/ It must be describable
2/ It must be memorable
3/ It must be effective without the use of colour
4/ It must be scalable i.e. effective when scaled down to an inch in size" - crawfishsoul, on 10/12/2007, -2/+80And IMHO those 4 bullets are the meat in this crap sandwich of an article. Nothing more to see here, keep moving.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+49I think the best logos have great ideas in them.
Here are a couple of logos with great ideas: http://creativebits.org/logos_with_a_meaning - Jadinlee, on 10/12/2007, -2/+30No Digg!!! This comment speaks for itself.
- bassman730, on 10/12/2007, -3/+29Is it that hard to write a sentence of two about this story?
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -4/+29"Title speaks for itself."
Stop.
Saying.
That. - Hayaemsay, on 10/12/2007, -3/+24Worthier than this article.
- Roger, on 10/12/2007, -1/+13We need a "What makes a great description?" story.

Open University's logo looks like a toilet seat. - beelz, on 10/12/2007, -8/+17http://72.14.253.104/search?hs=sUq&hl=en&lr=&c2coff=1&q=cache%3Ahttp%3A%2F%2Fwww.davidairey.com%2Fblog%2Fwhat-makes-a-good-logo%2F&btnG=Search
- Chupacabra82, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9I like how this article is all about great logos yet the little URL bar icony logo (the blue/black thing) for the website is ugly as hell.
- frijoles, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Did anyone else look at the UO logo and think it was an oddly-shaped toilet seat lid?
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7"How to Make a Great Title"
title says it all. - RandomGuySteve, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6I may not know the subject matter which looks best, but as a graphic designer, you're supposed to be able to create for any business or idea.
1. Keep it simple. Imagine every curve or detail costs the company millions of dollars. Cause it will if they get big enough
2. Keep it to the point. A duck is a duck. A circle is a ball with shading. Don't waste the picture on things that don't matter.
3. Color is bad. Color is not your job. Yet.
4. If it's done right, it should take more than one iteration.
5. If it's done right, it looks easy to do. - spyrochaete, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6It's only one guy
http://edition.cnn.com/2006/TECH/internet/07/19/google.logo/index.html
And I completely agree with you - doniguan, on 10/12/2007, -3/+9drop shadow
- titlesaysitall, on 10/12/2007, -14/+19Inaccurate, it should be title says it all and not title speaks for itself.
- kernelhappy, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7When the article is only 4-5 sentences and a few pictures writing 2-3 sentences ends up being plagiarism. =/
- rasterbator, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Looking at the logos chosen, here are a few gripes.
1. The chiropractic care logo is interesting, but it would make more sense for an Arthritis foundation. It looks like the top hand is rubbing the back of the bottom hand.
2. Keep Open logo is cool, except for the fact that the shadow defies logic. Shadow should not go up the green area which represents a room or outside. It should go out the doorframe, unless of course this is the Winchester Mystery House.
3. The Open University logo looks better as a vector, and I doubt the gradient prints well since that would pixelate when scaled, thereby frigging up the scalability factor that is mentioned in the four bullet points.
Keep in mind that a good logo — above all else — must communicate the company's message. Additionally, the content of a brochure, while it may be nicely designed, still has to communicate the company message and reach the target audience, or it has failed. - tracydanger, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5It's a little strange that the logos towards the bottom don't fit the 4 rules that he mentioned (i.e. look good in b&w).
- rasterbator, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Thanks for the link. Just in case you didn't know, Saul Bass created the fun IBM logo. He also created the original IBM logo, along with AT&T, United Way and many, many others. You can read about him here. He was one of the best in identity design.
http://www.designmuseum.org/design/saul-bass - Raian, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6"500 Server Error" does make for an excellent logo -- thank you digg!
- zwendkos, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5this is the best logo I have ever seen:
http://creativebits.org/files/8_1.jpg - wheezy360, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6Horizontal website? BOOOO!
- HitLines, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6Buried because the article offers nothing. For one that does, read about the FEDEX logo: http://www.thesneeze.com/mt-archives/000273.php (has been on digg before)
"Not long ago, I posted about the subliminal arrow in the FedEx logo. I received several emails regarding it, including one from design student Bobby Dragulescu. Thanks to Bobby and his typography professor Leah Hoffmitz, I was put in touch with the logo's creator: Mr. Lindon Leader of Leader Creative." - InfinitySnatch, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Speaks for itself, eh? May the answer surprise us as well!?
- hungryduck, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I've always liked the "Sea-doo" logo.
http://www.sea-doo.com/ - earlysound, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4I don't usually bash on things, but I honestly have no idea why this has so many diggs. The article says nothing that isn't painfully obvious to anyone paying attention to design. Despite the lack of a description in this post, I expected much more from the article.
- spargett, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2That "KeepOpen.com" logo is f**cking awesome. At least I love it.
http://blog.davidairey.com/images/logos/logopond-logos.jpg - RocketSeason, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5wow. there is nothing in that article that is of very much help to anyone at all.
- zwendkos, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3"500 Server Error" + "Title speaks for itself" = Buried!
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2ironic, considering this dude's own logo doesn't follow these 'tips' except for number 3 and 4 maybe.
- scordle, on 10/12/2007, -4/+5It would be great if the links on your page worked . . . especially the one saying you do web development?!
- HigherLogic, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Hey Dave, nice to see one of your articles up here in the Top 10, regardless of the comments. Some valid points of course, and an important question. Although, I often question on the web, if a logo should be nothing more than something that fits the style of a website and can grow and evolve with current and future design trends.
Unlike say, the Coca-Cola logo, which is something you see in the physical and daily, compared to a virtual and non-tangiable medium like the Internet.
Anyways, good to see you up here :) - steveguy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I thought it said what makes a great Lego. I was disappointed.
- pennyfan87, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Welcome to Digg, Veronica.
Where the painfully obvious is the poor man's bread. - ghjkl, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1its all a matter of PERSPECTIVE anyways.
geeez, there is no structural rule in making a cool logo. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1As long as it does not resemble a penis.
- batfan, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0My professor taught us that a
successful logo design should be:
1. Clear
2. Engaging
3. Memorable
4. Appropriate - urhiness, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Canadian National Rail still rules the logo world
http://www.cn.ca/productsservices/en_index.shtml - listrophy, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1Excellent article. I even have a keychain with that modified IBM logo on it. Seems it's not just for internal promotions, as I'm not exactly an employee of theirs. :)
- mickeyknoxxx, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1what makes a lasting website?
- lagartoflojo, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0The problem with the Sea-Doo logo is that, unless you know what it says, it's easy to think it says something else (my brother, for example, thought we had just bought a "Senado" jetski last summer)
- vonskippy, on 10/12/2007, -4/+3www.*****.ca - only in canada.
Oh, there's a "f" in there, oops.
Doesn't matter, horizontal scrolling was clever - in the 90's and golfing metaphors are great if your market is male 50-70 year old fogeys, if you're going for the dynamic market (15-35 with cash to waste) who gives a "shift" about golf??? - tektalk, on 10/12/2007, -4/+3@beels
thanks for the g-cache link - shiftless, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1Well, this was a really pointless article.
- westly, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0The "perception" that it is good.
- kokoni, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0i didn't know server error could make great logo
"500 Server Error
The web server encountered an error or misconfiguration and was unable to complete your request. If this error persists, please contact the webmaster, and inform them of the time the error occurred, and anything you might have done that may have caused the error."
/sarcasm - Klarth, on 10/12/2007, -5/+4http://www.b3ta.com/features/phalliclogoawards/
I prefer these myself. - nuttybar, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0whats so special about the rhino?
