What have I been listening to?
megamu.com — "This is all very interesting briefly, however Last.fm only provides a few mediocre methods of visualizing this vast amount of rich information. The significant missing dimension of the Last.fm visualizations is time. You can see an average over a time, but cannot see how listening habits change over time..."

- HunterTV, on 10/12/2007, -28/+16Digg me down but I love seeing all these new ways to visualize data, graphs are so last century.
That said, I don't need a graph to tell me what I've been listening to lately... NINNININININININININININ... - simplenation, on 10/12/2007, -18/+42interpol, andrew bird, sufjan stevens, broken social scene, sigur ros, radiohead...
good taste in music - bakagaigin, on 10/12/2007, -16/+6Seriously, this guy's taste in music is very good. (unlike the majority of the digg last.fm group, unfortunately...)
- merreborn, on 10/12/2007, -7/+7The type of histomap graph selected is really only readable if you select colors like you would for a map -- they need to be distinct from each other. More like this: http://www.kk.org/cooltools/archives/000453.php
The range of blues he chose are visually pleasing, but if you try to actually extract anything from the graph -- e.g. "How much have I listened to smashing pumpkins over time?", you're gonna have a hell of a time distinguishing *that* blue line from all the *other* blue lines.
Great concept. Pretty, but useless execution. - CatalystDM, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8@merreborn
The point of the final graph is something that is visually pleasing, not actually useful. The slight distinction in colors makes the graph much more visually stunning and results in something you want to put on your wall (which is good, since he designed a poster). Whether or not it's useful for extracting data, it's definitely something I would love to put on my wall if it were my music.

- ShootTheCore, on 10/12/2007, -0/+21That really was intresting and shows the true potential of last.fm
- iparker, on 10/12/2007, -0/+22I would buy one of those posters. Anyone know how?
- dotdan, on 10/12/2007, -2/+27The last.fm subscriptions might actually be worth something if they offered graphs like these.
That being said, I'd buy a poster too. And a few for my friends. (...copies of mine, naturally)

/you'll probably hate most of it- FishPoisonCon, on 10/12/2007, -7/+4so...what's the point in burying people who post their LFM profile? it's pretty obvious from the rest of the thread (site) that no one has anything to say anyway, so wtf? personally, i LIKE to see what other diggers are listening to.
DIGGERS: BURIED AS LAME! - kwazyJAS, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6There is a digg group on last.fm

-Dustin - awfulshot, on 10/12/2007, -1/+12so how am i able to see my music in graph form?
- IEatGod, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10But *of course* you use springs between artists in a physically balanced one-dimensional loop graph and let it work itself out. I mean, who the hell doesn't?
- cruzlee, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Strange also, that putting so much data into one dimension resulted in junk.
- smackhero, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@cruzlee:
it's not strange at all. artist similarity is not a sequential linear relationship that can be plotted on a one-dimensional spectrum. he should have mapped it onto at least a two-dimensional color gradient, or made a 3d graph using hue, saturation, and value as parameters. but since he wasn't trying to analyze the data, this produced a fairly aesthetically pleasing result.
- SharkMan, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3that is freaking awesome; and that guy has awesome taste too.
- xenotaku, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6I'm missing something, are any of us able to do this? I want a chart too!
- SamKellett, on 10/12/2007, -12/+4I'm digging down everyone who submits their last.fm profile.
That being said: http://last.fm/user/SamKellett/ - SilverSnayke, on 10/12/2007, -9/+1What have I been listening to?
METAL! http://www.last.fm/user/Silversnayke/- gdm9000, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4'After Forever' := underrated;
- mojaam, on 10/12/2007, -2/+12I love last.fm too, but they definately can do more with the info they get. Same goes to facebook. Let us continue to hope.
- neuros, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5I continue to hope that Facebook keeps the information they have to their damn selves.
- dmobley, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3this would be a lot more awesome if we could have the source code.
(I'm pretty sure I could manage to pipe the output to a file I can take down to a copy shop and have my own poster made honestly, and at the worst I'd like a wallpaper for my computer out of it...) - mikewhite314, on 10/12/2007, -0/+12I hope they hire him.
- josyouhad, on 10/12/2007, -6/+0Thank you for these songs!

- CraigJ, on 10/12/2007, -4/+1Looks pretty cool, but apparently unsupported on Vista 64-bit... I couldn't get it to install anyway.
- mikewhite314, on 10/12/2007, -0/+19This seems to do pretty much the same thing, and actually allows you to create the charts for your own username: http://www.last.fm/user/C26000/journal/2007/03/7/362748/
- bunbury, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6I think everyone has agreed: How the hell do we get our own graph?
- lost.sync, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3wow, that was actually truly interesting.
- sych0, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1is there any way to upload my existing itunes metadata to last.fm?
- lhnz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@sych0 (#6520677)
no.

- Snorglorf, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5This guy should release it or show what he did to the Last.fm people. I'd love to be able to create some more visual charts for my music-listening history.
- PjsPjs, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1That last graph is incomplete.
It needs a pair. - megamu, on 10/12/2007, -0/+15Hey all,
Thanks so much for all of your support and compliments. It was quite a shock to wake up this morning, surf blogs and digg like I do and find myself! I had no idea!
A few of you have emailed me, asking for posters and I provided raw files to the first few who asked, it isn't just a straight output from a program, but actually takes a little manual love (computers are just awful at typography!!!) to get these quality enough for me to lay claim to them. Because of this, I can't continue to offer posters on the fly.
There is a public version of this in the works (with much better attention to detail within the automation), that I hope to be able to release within the next month!
Thanks again - captin_nod, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Want to try this for yourself?
See: http://penguins.mooh.org/music/ - QuestForGlory, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I saw Pat Metheny in that little graph.....
good ;) that's what I like to see, Music that actually deserves that title
some other decent artists in there as well. - CatalystDM, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Coolest story I've seen in awhile... I'm going to try to do something similar with my data (albeit probably less beautiful).
- leonwehttam, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1haha yes GIRLTALK....im addicted to his stuff!
- antoni, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Wow, impressive. Last.fm definitely needs to implement more tools for visualising music that users listen to. Lately I've found that last.fm has been focusing too much on recommending artists rather than ways in looking at the listening trends to music I already listen to.
Check out the new & improved
