What happens when you take a photo at the right angle?
forum.cybernetnews.com — I normally hate forwarded emails but this one left me laughing. It is a collection of 14 photos that show you what happens when you're holding the camera at just the right angle:
- 5836 diggs
- digg it
- DreKor, on 10/12/2007, -37/+16I'm sort of afraid to check this out, anybody want to tell me if this is NSFW?
- r0ck3tm4nn, on 10/12/2007, -2/+32Well, if it actually loads, I'll let you know...
- sabster, on 10/12/2007, -6/+42yeah its funny.. but you wont be able to see it for long.. took like 5 minutes to load and it just got promoted a minute ago.

^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ - mvprj84, on 10/12/2007, -9/+28Nice, Digg just sent Apache into an infinite loop on the server...I'm in the process of restarting Apache right now. And yes, it is safe for work.
- seventoes, on 10/12/2007, -29/+17You dont know much about server maintenance do you? It wasnt an infinate loop, just alot of requests...
- klaymen, on 10/12/2007, -40/+24 replies, and no answer as to whether it's sfw
- sabster, on 10/12/2007, -2/+24yeah its safe for work
- RyanSK, on 10/12/2007, -7/+26http://duggmirror.com/design/What_happens_when_you_take_a_photo_at_the_right_angle/
Stop hammering that poor dude's server. =) - RetroRufio, on 10/12/2007, -18/+3The second to last one with the statue is definitely digitally edited.
- Sp0rAdiC, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2retrorufio: how do you figure?
- mvprj84, on 10/12/2007, -1/+36@seventoes
Thanks for pointing that out, but yes, I do know the difference. The site went down before it even made the frontpage of Digg and it was because of an infinite loop that Apache got sent into. When it happened I only had 22 concurrent HTTP requests which is normal but then Apache's CPU usage started doubling...the sign of an unending request by a user. It has happened for me before as I am a website administrator so maybe you shouldn't assume that people don't know what their talking about, k??
Also, it was the result of a plug-in that I was using in the forum in case you really cared to know...but hey I guess I'm too stupid to be able to figure that out. - sancho320, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9@mvprj84
Wow!
I don't know what the hell you just said, but I'll take your word for it. - mvprj84, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8@sancho320
I couldn't stop laughing after reading your comment but I just wish the Digg community would realize that not every site that crashes is because they are using a shared server. We pay good money each month to get a dedicated server and maintain websites for several companies. Server failures are a fact of life and sometimes they happen at the most inopportune time, but as an administrator we learn to deal with them the best we can.
It was difficult for me to get the server back on its feet because every time I would re-enable all of the processes it would get murdered with HTTP requests and MySQL queries (over 50 a second) and there wasn't enough time for caching mechanisms to kick back in.
One thing that is for sure is that I am glad there is a site like duggmirror that is available for users to turn to when sites go down. The thing I hate the most about the commenting on Digg when a site goes down are the 50 comments that are along the lines of "OMG THE SITE IS DOWN OMG!?!?!?! WHAT THE HELL" and most of the comments following the first are all the same. Maybe there should be a "Digg Class" that teaches common courtesy in comments? - MadModMike, on 10/12/2007, -1/+23Pshh...Those aren't right angles. Right angles are 90 degrees. Duhhh.
- SteamyV, on 10/12/2007, -16/+0The link doesn't appear to work.
- soda0289, on 10/12/2007, -11/+12http://duggmirror.com/
- shlolz, on 10/12/2007, -9/+3Nice, thanks for that :)
- Craga89, on 10/12/2007, -3/+19Maybe they should add a duggmirror link to the sites interface. Could work...
- bobmagoo, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6*insert mandatory plug for duggmirror greasemonkey script*
http://userscripts.org/scripts/show/1807 - idonthack, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3@bobmagoo
Some of us aren't using Firefox. That's great for those who are but it would be better to have a link in the real site UI. - chesterjosiah, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3And how about the full link to duggmirror for those of us who read Digg on a mobile device?
- tw0k1ngs, on 10/12/2007, -3/+26I'm a bit disappointed with the "Leaning Tower" pic... Too cliche, the others are great.
- xpsgen2man, on 10/12/2007, -0/+22meh i thought kicking it was a change from leaning on it at least.
- mt066, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4How was it that both the tower and the person were in focus there?
- shakin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9"How was it that both the tower and the person were in focus there?"
On a camera with manual settings you can set a small aperture, which gives you a larger depth of field. If the guy were too close to the camera, the tower would likely be out of focus, but by moving away from the person the photographer was able to get both in focus when using the small aperture. The photo is cropped to make the person look closer to the camera.
- hydrokayak, on 10/12/2007, -11/+1Two minutes in, and the link is broken...
DIGG EFFECT TO THE MAX!
EDIT: It's two minutes on the front page, or the 'timer' on the links isn't working... - napier, on 10/12/2007, -2/+27From the title I thought this was going to be a bunch of photos of people's angled, heavily contrasted Myspace pictures and then pictures of what they actually look like...
- Crass22, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5HAH that would probably have been just as interesting.
- mousy, on 10/12/2007, -2/+28That guy from the fantastic four plays football ?
- Craga89, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11I'm just glad he's not in goal.
- Lumiras, on 10/12/2007, -10/+1his name is Reed Richards..........and he was allowed to play football just as long as he didn't try to play goalkeeper
- brotherfranciz, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Nope, his name is Vince Grella and he plays as a defensive midfielder for the Socceroos (and Parma in the Serie A I believe...). Looks like the World Cup game where the Aussies won 3:1 against the Japanese...
- CCB0x45, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2Great pics, could anyone explain the 4th one down with the soldier washing the foot? I don't get it, is there another dude right behind him who's foot hes washing?
- sabster, on 10/12/2007, -14/+2someone is next to him
- Sanitarium, on 10/12/2007, -1/+24Its his other shoe sitting beside him, and it is his foot he is washing.
- unleashedlive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3his boots off it's just sitting there.
- cjazz108, on 10/12/2007, -19/+9(... digg down, should have refreshed before commenting)
- duster, on 10/12/2007, -21/+10Crap! Digg me down too.
- PaGaNism, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3No there's no one else there. The soldier has taken his boot off to wash his foot, placed the boot under himself and is almost sitting on the it. The picture is taken from such and angle that it appears he is crounching with both is booted feet on the floor.
- imajin, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2what happened to the good ol days when people who begged to be dugg down were mercilessly dugg up?
- terrya64, on 10/12/2007, -7/+2I got this same email last week, pretty good pictures.
- chaosmachine, on 10/12/2007, -0/+31the last one with the statue grabbing the girl is in ottawa.. it commemorates women getting the right to vote.
- chibigoku, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9The thing I dont get about that one though is to me, it looks like she just ran into it, and it is touching her. if thats the case, it doesnt really fit all the rest, where the perfect angle made it look like something was going on that wasnt. but that one is just taking a picture of a statue holding a womans breast.....
- JRumph, on 10/12/2007, -1/+27Yeah, I think she put "herself" into the statue's hand on purpose. Doesn't really fit with everything else.
- alej744, on 10/12/2007, -3/+8Yeah that one sucked.
- teken894, on 10/12/2007, -6/+1I think the woman is just walking, and the statue APPEARS to be grabbing her breasts...
Not any physical contact... - Daemons, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Reminds me of a joke...
A wealthy man has three women who he is interested in marrying, but he can't decide which. He gives each of them $5000 to see what they would do with it to help him decide.
The first woman uses the money to get breast implants and a complete makeover. She tells him this is so she can be pleasing to his eye. He is impressed.
The second woman uses the money to buy him new golf clubs, new gizmos for his computer, and all sorts of nice things. She tells him this is because she loves him so much that she wants to make him happy. He is impressed.
The third woman invests the money in the Stock Market, more than doubles it, pays him back his $5000 and invests the rest in a joint account. She tells him this is so they can have a nest egg for their future. He is impressed.
So he marries the one with the biggest *****.
- evilelf2407, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2ha those were actually pretty entertaining.
- Damienk, on 10/12/2007, -12/+5most of these and more on photoshopit: http://photoshopit.wordpress.com/2006/11/12/great_angle/
- Damienk, on 10/12/2007, -7/+2you all suck for digging me down. only tryin to help.
- crysys, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1I have a question, can the link in the main story link directly to duggmirror? This would keep the massive load of a good digging off the original server.
The downside would be a massive load ^nth on duggmirror and relatively zero pageviews for the story but when linking to smaller third party sites it might be more polite AND keep access to the story availible.
Am I ignoring something big here?- stealth658, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1If you use Firefox, download the Duggmirror Firefox extension from here: http://duggtrends.com/duggmirror.aspx
- kernelhappy, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2The problem is that some people want the traffic since they generate revenue off of it, so to link directly to the mirror would directly deny people income from their content.
While I appreciate a good firefox extension, why not just use a bookmarklet. The firefox extension puts the duggmirror link right on the main page which is nice, but if you're like me and already have a dozen extensions to worry about upgrading every time a new version of firefox comes out, you try to avoid additional ones.
Best of all the bookmarklet works in both firefox and IE.
http://duggtrends.com/duggmirror.aspx - LycoLoco, on 10/12/2007, -3/+3"The problem is that some people want the traffic since they generate revenue off of it, so to link directly to the mirror would directly deny people income from their content."
And that's a problem why? How much ***** blogspam do we get on this site? Why not implement duggmirror and effectively stop that? - crysys, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Well blogspammers bring it on themselves, wheather or not the result is punishment or reward is unclear to me. But if someone is linking to a story like this, or a post on a message board where you know without doubt you're going to digg the website out of existance can you instead link to duggmirror and save them or does duggmirror not work like that?
- broomett, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1How could you possibly link to the Duggmirror site? It doesn't EXIST until you submit the story. In fact, it doesn't exist until your story reaches the home page, which is why some stories don't get mirrored in time.
- dingmah, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2The first gymnast one is creepy. Initially I thought her head was squashed or something.
- livejamie, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2creative
- Shorties, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1I got this email a couple days ago and the first thing that went through my mind was maybe I should post it on digg, I was to lazy to host it anywhere though, good to see someone got it up here.
- morphie, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I lol'ed at the cat and the long arm. Very cool. :P
- CRasH180, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1Seen the one of the guy pissing into the lake before. Was sent my a friend of mine. Those are a very good collection. Dugg!
- daxsymbiont, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9i don't get what's funny about the one at the beach.
- imdwalrus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cocaine
"The cocaine typically is poured onto a flat, hard surface (such as a mirror) and divided into "lines", which are then insufflated. The amount of cocaine in a line varies widely from person to person and occasion to occasion (the purity of the cocaine is also a factor), but one line is generally considered to be a single dose and is typically 35mg-100mg. However as tolerance builds rapidly in the short-term (hours), many lines are often snorted to produce greater effects."
Apparently, he's hit the "many, MANY lines" phase. :¬) - jeremychoi, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6cocaine
- daxsymbiont, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4ah right. it just looked off topic like being there on purpose, not needing a special photo angle.
- Fatalis, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1Crap, I accidentally dug you up…
- heoko, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6That picture is of me, Taken at Barrow, Alaska on the coast to reach Point Barrow. I remember that day, I didn't think it was cocaine at all, i thought it was fun blowing the foam around : (. Well at least some cocaine lovers thought it was funny. I was in high school when that picture was taken, about the year 2000 is when the pic was taken, by the family that was taking care of me. It was a bent plastic pipe that I was holding, i just rotated it to look straight. I have no clue how this pic found its way to the internet, but hell I now got mads street cred.
- imdwalrus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cocaine
- grafenberg, on 10/12/2007, -6/+1haha I'm so happy hahaha
- kmb1794, on 10/12/2007, -5/+0lame
- pustulio, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0that was great
- Alchemeron, on 10/12/2007, -0/+13Fwd: Fwd: Fwd: Fwd: Fwd: Fwd: Fwd: Fwd: Fwd: Fwd: Fwd: What happens when you take a photo at the right angle?
- rubah, on 10/12/2007, -4/+0Some of those looked kinda posed xD
But speaking of the right angle, I've had this picture of two guys Turkish wrestling for years now, and the guy laying on the ground looks like a disembodied leg. I've never really figured the angle out, and it's super creepy xD
http://images.google.com/imgres?imgurl=http://img126.imageshack.us/img126/5144/wrestler8ni.jpg&imgrefurl=http://bedstory.blogspot.com/2005_10_01_bedstory_archive.html&h=315&w=415&sz=34&hl=en&sig2=Htz-tNY-1DyBWTM73svu1Q&start=21&tbnid=RoHgFMT-xYKk6M:&tbnh=95&tbnw=125&ei=MP6JRfyuA8bkaM3NnbAN&prev=/images%3Fq%3Dturkish%2Bwrestling%26start%3D20%26ndsp%3D20%26svnum%3D10%26hl%3Den%26lr%3D%26safe%3Doff%26sa%3DN- feedbag, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Really? The picture you linked doesn't seem to be a strange angle at all, just a cropped picture. That's not the leg, it's the torso and left arm. The top of the shoulder and head are cropped off at the left. It's a guy sitting up being held in an.... unusual... manner. (Then again, I know nothing about Turkish wrestling)
- jetfuel, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3"What happens when you take a photo at the right angle?"
If it has something to do with Chuck Norris, I'm leaving. - WestDC, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Personally I'd like to see what would happen if you were to take a photo at the WRONG angle.
- haloevo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1those are pretty funny :P
- dguralnick, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Don't forget this classic golf photo.
http://www.davidclement.com/dc-graphics/golfer.jpeg- tealturtle, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Wow, who designed that trophy? LOL
- icoms, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1-8 old
- broomett, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This would have been funnier without the intentional pictures. Gee, no tourist has EVER made a "I'm holding up (or pushing over) the Leaning Tower of Pisa" picture before. Or had a statue fondle them before.
- elliam, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Is that Lenin shooting hoops?
- drewskyjones, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Cool pictures! On a another note, I have to say it blows me away that my 73 year old non-techie mom sent this to me a couple of days ago. I never would have thought that she would ever be faster than Digg...
- jwmartin, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0I've been a Blockbuster online customer for about 8 months after trying 2 other online rental companies. I love the online service and until last month, I loved the free weekly in store rental. It was perfect when there was a new release out that I wanted to see or if I wanted a kid friendly movie and didn't have any from my queue at that time. Then they switched to Total Access. It's a great idea, unfortunately, it only works at participating stores. None of the stores around me are participating. So now, they've taken away the free weekly rental and replaced it with something I can't use. I sent them an email asking what they planned to do for those who couldn't use Total Access. Starting in January, they are bumping me up to the 4 movie at a time plan at no extra charge (I'm paying for 3). And I get a monthly free rental coupon. While I would have preferred to keep things the way they were, I am impressed with their customer service and at least they have a solution to the problem. Their customer service blows Intelliflix away.
- jwmartin, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0Sorry about that. I had multiple tabs open when I logged in and I guess it posted my comment to the last tab opened instead of the one I clicked Log in from.
- ThePharaoh, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1No pics come up in the original or the mirror...
- DarkDays, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1That guy with the "three" legs took me a while =P
- rovertly, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1ain't it funny to see what's buried beneath your stupid *****.
- onlineleben, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Tried to do similar shots some time ago and it is really difficult to get the perspective right.
The one with the tower of Pisa is a classic one which my grandpa already did in the 50s, but the others are really good for a laugh.
Enjoy and have a nice christmas
http://www.digitalcameratips.de - Tips & Tricks about Digital Photography - daimposter, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2i'm with some people on this....i was expecting pictures at 90degrees. I'm not joking, i assumed "right angle" , when on a tech site like digg, would mean 90 degrees.
- supervapio, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Awesome. I don't think this is for real
- DesignRocks, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Cool. I can't believe it!
- anothersaab, on 10/11/2007, -0/+0hey guys, what's going on over on this thread?
