Ha... writing that one down. - cvrefugee, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Hey...format c: didn't work :(
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1it's a neat website, but with all the trouble the artuhor did to design and write the code he could of thought of something better than the disk operating system. bash, anyone? but, i guess that's not as mainstream as the widely recognized C:> prompt. digg.
- sheldonwilson, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Just the other day, I flipped on my 80386 for no other reason than I was nostalgic. I must be a freak, because I really like DOS. Does anybody here remember when dosshell was the latest thing? Love me some bananas.
This dos-esque site looks cool, but for an experienced dos user, it's lacking quite a bit. Don't tell me that dir/w/p is a bad command! It would have been cooler if the author had put the different sections of the site into folders. For example:
C:>dir/p
10/29/2005 Main
C:>cd main
C:Main>
etc. Give us a bit of a challenge. Show that you put a lot of time into it. I do believe that the author probably spent a lot of time on the design of his dos-style site, but it comes off more like a simple facade.
Sidenote: I love the BASIC reference: 20 GOTO 10 I used to love sending all my junior high computers into loops. - Steff, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1The Google API has a 1000 queries per day limit.
Kinda sucks but hey. What I also noticed is weird is that the results from the API are different from the google.com search results. - Steff, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1what !! I can't believe how popular this is !! I made this site ages ago and just figured Id 'give it a try' on here. in 4 hrs ive had 3,913 hits.
Thanks for all the positive posts! - lpcustom, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2"Seriously horribly UI... there's a reason DOS fell off the face of the earth"
Start...Run....CMD
DOS didn't fall of the face of the earth. Why do people feel they must spout out useless comments about articles. Get this people, you don't have to post a comment to every story. If you aren't interested in the article or post, don't look at it. Move on to the next.
Now back on topic, if any of you like this you could try out "dosbox" for windows or *nix. Really fun to search the abandonware sites for an old DOS game you used to love and play it in dosbox. - bunzai, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1digg for creative...
- borderpatrol, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Not many commands. Just pretty looks.
- LoPhatt, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Oh this is really neat.. just like getting out of a car and walking.
- funderbolt, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@steff
You need to improve this in some way. I think it'd be cool if you added BBS textfiles (http://www.textfiles.com/) from the bad ol' days. You could co-operate with them or somebody else on this.
Something else that would be cool if you could make an interface that emulates the old Wildcat BBS software (or any other one). Give your site a hi-style lo-fi look.
I'd love to see any improvements you make to the site, so that you have some kind of content there. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0wft... just hit run cmd... and its still pointless
- nocre, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0lpcustom - Skaught already pointed this out, but the cmd line in Windows is not DOS. It's commonly known as Fake-DOS or DOS 7, but the last DOS version came out in 1994, I think. 6.4? Or something along those lines.
Digg for creativity, though, as has been made mention, it isn't true emulation and I also prefer *nix cmds. - Mulo, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Doesn't work on a Mac! LoL!
- motionblur, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Cool gimmick
- recover82, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0date command doesn't work.
- fireboatcaptain, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0My buddy has a similar page that includes RSS feeds from news and pseudonews sites that is a bit cooler than this. It is available at root.boadway.ca
He is the webmaster for our site wingitfilm.ca - asciirock, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Hey I've had a command line website for ages: asciirock Tip, try typing "menu" at the prompt. Also cool but unintentional, as a side-effect of how i coded the actionscipt, you can type "tostring" and get the value returned...
- verse101, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Wow.. I loved DOS. Use to also use unix emulators in DOS. Someone mentioned the Lynx browser, and I have to admit I use to check out websites with that. haha.. i'm old.
- airander, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0this is a lil off topic, but there are rumors that google is making a web based operating system. obviously will be a lot different then this but very cool idea, something like taking webmail a lot further.
- shudap, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0alright, now that's just cool.
- jwestbrook, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0ok this is great but where's my ls?
locate, tab completion, ps?
.....oh right its DOS......
:-) - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0oops the slash didnt show ;-P
- Dhalgren, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I hate that whenever I get into DOS now I am always typing ls and tabbing...
- asciirock, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0whoops. that should have read: http://www.asiirock.com
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0It's AJAX, quick digg it!
- Hattrick, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Okay, a reluctant digg for nostalgia's sake. I really don't think this was a good use of time when you compare it to the web based KDE desktop we saw a couple of days ago. Besides, if you are going to do a shell on the Internet, why DOS??? (BBS nightmares are imminent..)
- Swissarmyboy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Brilliant self-promo. I give the guy major cred....hope he gets a great job from this.
- dhughes, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0 Yes I agree, very creative.
- Tempesta, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0its cool, except it wears thin, and the novelty dies fast.
its weak. - nickoberg, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0thanks really cool.
`nick - Lorian, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Bah, I don't know any DOS commands other than dir...
- kanenas.net, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Now that is VERY, VERY COOL !!! You took us a long way back in time ... :-)
Thank you !
kanenas.net - MrCoke, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0go to the about page, it has an image... lame
- camintmier, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Darn, "del *.* /y" doesn't work.
Pretty interesting though, if it could be expanded to more commands, it could be made into a web disk management client or something. - Chasuk, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0lpcustom: I agree 100%. Ignore SkaughtAnus.
Steff: I could get the Search to work. Is it broken, or am I missing something? - JAWA, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0hahahaha "format c:" didn't work for some reason.
cool, but quickly boring site - NSXROX, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0search was working earlier, but seems to be broken now.
- tmvander, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Sorry, no digg. It doesn't even emulate common DOS commands. For those of you that are interested in *nix style emulation, I found this link a long time ago. Just click the "open terminal" link.
http://www.masswerk.at/jsuix/ - jgun1969, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Very original idea though from a webdesign point of view
- slapout, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"DOS didn't fall of the face of the earth. Why do people feel they must spout out useless comments about articles. I second your comment.
This is the best "resume" I've seen in a long time. It's very creative.
- znxster, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0+digg just because of the unique idea..
- ChiliJ, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0No digg! jsuix is light years better. It even allows you to create virtual files and folders.
http://www.masswerk.at/jsuix/ - NerveBand, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0damn....now thats what you call nice *****.
- Shdwdrgn, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I have to chime in a "Me Too" here... would love to see exactly how this works. I tried to wget a copy of the website, but I couldn't get enough files to make this work (all commands return "Bad command or filename" errors).
Steff - c'mon man, let us in on the secret! - EricBoyers, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0There's no emulation here, just smoke (css) and mirrors (javascript).
- metalgore32, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I think the digg effect is hitting it hard, I can't get the search feature to work. Otherwise this is a really cool web app. Great job!
- beejay54, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I love this. Made for geeks of course.
- asciirock, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0aargh - i mean:
