Website emulating DOS
20-goto-10.com — AJAX website looks and works like DOS. You type commands to 'browse' the site. Pretty nifty.
- 1323 diggs
- digg it
- shudap, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0alright, now that's just cool.
- landlord, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Way Cool!
- Th3_anOmoLy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0ahhh memories...
- tpimental, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0Seriously horribly UI... there's a reason DOS fell off the face of the earth
- leehord, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Now if only we could load up some old DOS games on this thing!
- balazs, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0^^ that would be great
- FriedGeek, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I'm with you tpimental. If you like to get the "old school" feel but actually have a useful browser check into the text based Lynx browser. It's been a staple on Lynux forever but if you've never tried the tuxy os then you may not have seen it. Link to Lynx for windows:http://home.pacific.net.sg/~kennethkwok/lynx/
- lpcustom, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2"Seriously horribly UI... there's a reason DOS fell off the face of the earth"
Start...Run....CMD
DOS didn't fall of the face of the earth. Why do people feel they must spout out useless comments about articles. Get this people, you don't have to post a comment to every story. If you aren't interested in the article or post, don't look at it. Move on to the next.
Now back on topic, if any of you like this you could try out "dosbox" for windows or *nix. Really fun to search the abandonware sites for an old DOS game you used to love and play it in dosbox. - Dhalgren, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I hate that whenever I get into DOS now I am always typing ls and tabbing...
- ScottyTee, on 10/12/2007, -3/+0Cool stuff, credits to the author...

http://www.diggfans.com - grahagre, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1it's a neat website, but with all the trouble the artuhor did to design and write the code he could of thought of something better than the disk operating system. bash, anyone? but, i guess that's not as mainstream as the widely recognized C:> prompt. digg.
- avtomat, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0c:fdisk c:
- avtomat, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0^ hmm... backslashes never post
- grahagre, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0oops the slash didnt show ;-P
- borderpatrol, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Not many commands. Just pretty looks.
- jwestbrook, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0ok this is great but where's my ls?
locate, tab completion, ps?
.....oh right its DOS......
:-) - cvrefugee, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Hey...format c: didn't work :(
- bunzai, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1digg for creative...
- CorpT, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Apparently the way to get dugg around here is to put AJAX in the story. I'll have to rmemeber that.
- rtphokie, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0It's AJAX, quick digg it!
- dhughes, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0 Yes I agree, very creative.
- Crazyguy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0sweet. How did he do this?
Serriously I am a webmaster I want to be able to dot this. - Steff, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1what !! I can't believe how popular this is !! I made this site ages ago and just figured Id 'give it a try' on here. in 4 hrs ive had 3,913 hits.
Thanks for all the positive posts! - fatrandy13, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0pretty pointless...maybe a website emulating bash or tcsh would be nice, but dos??? c'mon...
- lafingputz, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0WOW, this is cool...AND he lives in my area!! nice!
- LoPhatt, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Oh this is really neat.. just like getting out of a car and walking.
- shade73, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0aboslutely cool!
- funderbolt, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@steff
You need to improve this in some way. I think it'd be cool if you added BBS textfiles (http://www.textfiles.com/) from the bad ol' days. You could co-operate with them or somebody else on this.
Something else that would be cool if you could make an interface that emulates the old Wildcat BBS software (or any other one). Give your site a hi-style lo-fi look.
I'd love to see any improvements you make to the site, so that you have some kind of content there. - NSXROX, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0very kewl!
- KriLL3.2™, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0deltree c: ?
- aside, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0seriously, people..
what's the deal with all the unix "showing off"
i'm sure we all know our bash commands
at any rate, where's edlin? that would be sweet, web editing with edlin! - FriedGeek, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0hmmm. If I make a site that is nothing but a image that looks like a blue screen of death... and tell people to go to the page and hit F11 to make it full screen... and then put ajax in the digg post... I bet I could get to the front page ASAP.
- Punisher2K, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Now if I could just play Infocom games on that site...
- PowerCow, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I digg it.. creative.. and if i made it i would still digg it.. I dont see it as spam as he is showing off his creativity and not trying to sell you a website design.. sure it is a horrible UI.. so freaken what.. IT is a concept.. I dont see all the naysayyers with there versions of this..
AND DOS died so that idiots could finally own and somewhat understand computers. They didnt kill it so that smart people could have a nice pretty interface.
I say awesome job dude and thanks for bringing back the memories. - rhfootball, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0I tried an fdisk and it didn't work!

http://rhfootball.blogspot.com/ - sheldonwilson, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Just the other day, I flipped on my 80386 for no other reason than I was nostalgic. I must be a freak, because I really like DOS. Does anybody here remember when dosshell was the latest thing? Love me some bananas.
This dos-esque site looks cool, but for an experienced dos user, it's lacking quite a bit. Don't tell me that dir/w/p is a bad command! It would have been cooler if the author had put the different sections of the site into folders. For example:
C:>dir/p
10/29/2005 Main
C:>cd main
C:Main>
etc. Give us a bit of a challenge. Show that you put a lot of time into it. I do believe that the author probably spent a lot of time on the design of his dos-style site, but it comes off more like a simple facade.
Sidenote: I love the BASIC reference: 20 GOTO 10 I used to love sending all my junior high computers into loops. - sTiVo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0no digg for you...
You can't do anything in their DOS shell. It's all for looks... - harris, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This is amazing, really shows the capabilities of Ajax.
"You can't do anything in their DOS shell. It's all for looks..."
It wasn't meant to emulate DOS, it's a DESIGN. - Swissarmyboy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Brilliant self-promo. I give the guy major cred....hope he gets a great job from this.
- Hattrick, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Okay, a reluctant digg for nostalgia's sake. I really don't think this was a good use of time when you compare it to the web based KDE desktop we saw a couple of days ago. Besides, if you are going to do a shell on the Internet, why DOS??? (BBS nightmares are imminent..)
- tmvander, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Sorry, no digg. It doesn't even emulate common DOS commands. For those of you that are interested in *nix style emulation, I found this link a long time ago. Just click the "open terminal" link.
http://www.masswerk.at/jsuix/ - camintmier, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Darn, "del *.* /y" doesn't work.
Pretty interesting though, if it could be expanded to more commands, it could be made into a web disk management client or something. - Lorian, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Bah, I don't know any DOS commands other than dir...
- slapout, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"DOS didn't fall of the face of the earth. Why do people feel they must spout out useless comments about articles. Get this people, you don't have to post a comment to every story. If you aren't interested in the article or post, don't look at it. Move on to the next."
I second your comment.
This is the best "resume" I've seen in a long time. It's very creative.
- kanenas.net, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Now that is VERY, VERY COOL !!! You took us a long way back in time ... :-)
Thank you !
kanenas.net - beejay54, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I love this. Made for geeks of course.
- metalgore32, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I think the digg effect is hitting it hard, I can't get the search feature to work. Otherwise this is a really cool web app. Great job!
- EricBoyers, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0There's no emulation here, just smoke (css) and mirrors (javascript).
- jgun1969, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Very original idea though from a webdesign point of view
- MrCoke, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0go to the about page, it has an image... lame
