- whozyodaddy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+27Yeah, it looks slick - but the only time I go there is to update.
- trunkster, on 10/12/2007, -2/+22So far 49 diggers do, more to come.
- yellowbkpk, on 10/12/2007, -5/+23Pretty.
- jer2eydevil88, on 10/12/2007, -2/+19VLC is more like the guy who can read 500 languages, speak in another 1,500 tongues and has does it all with such a small body type that even the 400lb gorilla envies his abilities.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+15Um, it's pretty, but isn't orange VLC's color?
- btipling, on 10/12/2007, -8/+21It's nice but, in my opinion, it's not the best design out of the bunch:
http://wiki.videolan.org/index.php/WebsiteDesign#Tombigel - Lifestory, on 10/12/2007, -1/+12and 18 diggers who couldnt care less about your comment and want to bury it. more to come.
- kgoule, on 10/12/2007, -2/+12> Powerdrift
Thanks dude, that was my design... but unfortunately it wasn't good enough ! - Jugalator, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7I actually prefer the minimalist unskinned look, but with the major exception of the stupid scroll bar behavior. In basically all other players, *and* VLC's skinned mode, you get the player to jump to where you clicked, but not in VLC's unskinned mode on Windows at least. It jumps somewhere quite radically elsewhere somewhere in the vicinity of your mouse click. :-S I really hope this can be fixed soon, but it's been there for a long time, so I'm not sure.
- monkeyforest, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Agreed. The whole site looks much cleaner and easier to navigate. VLC is a great program (and check out http://portableapps.com/apps/music_video/vlc_portable - a smaller portable version for your USB drive), but I could imagine many people being put off by the dated look and confusing nature of the old site.
Good idea to put the site design out as a competition, leaving the VLC team to concentrate on the important stuff - developing the software! - diafel, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7Now if only they'll do a redesign on the player itself, so it doesn't look like it came straight out of 1996.
- drizek, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7New default skin: http://download.videolan.org/vlc/screenshots/0.8.5/VLC-default-skin.jpg
Looks pretty fing sexy to me, and it doesnt have that same bloat you get with WMP and the rest of em. - Lifestory, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5oh my.... now i can really fully appreciate why this design was a commendable improvements to the former. thanks rub3X for the effort.
- hmemcpy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Ahh.. So Web 2.0-ish
Tubed... err.. dugg :) - Bobski, on 10/12/2007, -4/+8Now if they'd just redesign that dumb traffic cone icon.
- noof, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4The new one is better than the old, but kgoule's is awesome!
http://kgoule.com/vlc/vlc-home-kgoule.png - mojaam, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Love the fact more and more companies/services are letting their users use their creativity. Now if only Last.fm plugin will be out for VLC.
- Qoogirl, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I agree that this design is much better.
I can even send some of my friends here now without them asking me, "Where is download? What? I don't see that. It's next to what? I can't understand. Big font? What's a font?" - antitab, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4"VLC is nice... but no media player is anywhere near MPlayer. - Only people that have tried both can mod me down."
Uhh... VLC is essentially the same thing as MPlayer. Both are based on FFMPEG's libavcodec/libavformat for decoding, postprocessing, and etc. In fact, VLC, MPlayer, and ffdshow with any directshow-based player (including WMP) are all simply different implementations of the same core libs. - dnthomps, on 10/12/2007, -8/+12Why does it need to look pretty. They obviously invest their time in actual development... Much more than I can say for a lot of programers.
Great Job VLC!! - CJz44, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4It does support streaming media and playlists. Not sure about libraries.
- bguthro, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4looks like every other web 2.0 site out there. Way to stand apart from the crowd guys!
- weiran, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6The design looks good, but the HTML behind it is pretty poor. It uses XHTML 1.1, which is only valid if its served up with a MIME type of application/xhtml+xml (http://www.w3.org/TR/2002/NOTE-xhtml-media-types-20020801/#application-xhtml-xml) [the W3 Validator doesn't catch this, but it is spec - should uses 1.0 instead), it uses the XML declaration at the top, even though it's discouraged by the spec, AND messes up IEs parsing of the document, but to top it off, it is semantically awful, with content and style embedded in the HTML (class names with "left" and "blue" etc.), and design methodologies that go back to table based designs (spacer divs... WTF?).
But it does look nice and friendly.
Woo... rant over. - Powerdrift, on 10/12/2007, -4/+7The last one looks the best.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4eww you mean people actually use that? This dock icon looks WAY better than that.
http://www.macthemesforums.net/viewtopic.php?t=16776854&highlight=vlc - rouxx, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Well I'm a bit sad, I don't really like this one. I would have loved to see kgoule's one instead !
http://kgoule.com/2006/07/13/concours-vlc/
Anyway - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4I want to see your extensive website redesigns...I bet they all suck.
- Web_Weasel, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Very nice. Now they need to change that ugly icon.
- ForbesBingley, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3It's about time because the last design was *****...
- championchap, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4i think they went with the best design out of the bunch, but this one was a close second in my opinion
http://kgoule.com/vlc/html/ - Zippo, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4muuuuch better.
- LucasVB, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Good stuff, the navigation is much better now! And while I'm at it I'll get the new version...
- HsoKinees, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3it's interesting how the linux version has the most support...
- apocalizer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Only so Diggers can laugh at it and rant about how ***** and bloated WMP is.
- Recluse, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Looks nice, and its a huge improvement over the old design which was butt ugly.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Bitch elsewhere. Kthxbye.
- brkn, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Congratulations VLC! The site really needed this makeover, and now it's much more accessible for non-technical users to jump in and download the player without fuss. Sure it may not have the graphical shinyness of some of the other designs, but it gets straight to the point and makes things simple, and that's great.
- doug_brit, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Agreed
- atomicshed, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3ah i see the 'improvement' now
- tdskate, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Wel wel, whatdoyaknow, web2.0-steez. But they should really consider a nice'r default icon for VLC Player.
- kgoule, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@championchap @cduquette @cathode @etandrib
Thanks to all of you. You really cheers me up.
I was really disappointed when I saw that my design was not the winning one... at least they should have let the users chose for it... - bluephoenix, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2this is news? why is this being dugg so much?
- Xilon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"It's nice but, in my opinion, it's not the best design out of the bunch:"
Definitely agreed, I would say it's actually one of the worst. I much prefer Maurice's design, Neurotic's second and third design, Dexx's (For the whole fancy art stuff... it appeals to people, though I prefer minimal stuff), but most of all kgoule's for the amazing banner, great clour choice and overall great layout. Good job.
Though the layout of the design they chose is pretty good, I dislike the colour choice and header. Vlc uses Orange, blue just doesn't fit in with that. It doesn't really showcase anything about VLC, it's quite dull actually and I really hate the diagnal scanlines or whatever it's called. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I agree. This is retarded.
- porkstacker, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Cool, they've even coded in IE7 HACKS in their HTML code so as to avoid the all-too-familiar for IE Quirksmode and CSS display issues. Way to go, MS!!!
- ogmak, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Sigh, VLC player is soo good, I just wish it worked with Apple's Front Row. Then my mac would be perfect
- acceptab1euname, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@Jugalator: agreed, I've been having the same problem since I started using VLC.
That having been said, I've been using VLC and VLS for the past few years now, and they kicks ass. Great work VideoLAN team! I think a lot of us out there owe you guys big for making such awesome pieces of software. I know that a digg comment doesn't serve as much thanks, but please know your hard work is appreciated by at least one person. -
