Since using flash at night tends to screw colours up a lot, try shoving your fingers in front of the flash (Not right on top of it, 2cm or so away), it tends to make the colours a lot more accurate, and with a bit of practice, you can cast shadows on specific parts, like on someones head that the flash was over-exposing that part (A head, or a reflective part of a costume, for example), and I'm sure it could be used to make scary-looking-shadows.
    Only problem is the light bouncing of your hand when it's dark can be pretty sore/annoying, so you need to close your eyes just as you take the picture, which can be inconvenient, or go semi-blind - which is probably more inconvenient
