Threaded Digg Comments That Actually Look Nice
userscripts.org — A greasemonkey script that restores the look of the old comments but keeps the new ability of threading comments. Looks a lot nicer than what Digg implemented. Made by tlpro
- 870 diggs
- digg it
- fugazi, on 10/11/2007, -4/+34Combined with http://userscripts.org/scripts/show/10101 and its perfect although a little choppy.
- Trixrox, on 10/11/2007, -18/+2Digg's comments have always been a bit choppy I think. There needs to be some optimization there, either server side or in Firefox's code base.
- teh_techie, on 10/11/2007, -9/+2Haha, made you needlessly click!
Maybe that's what digg is doing... don't ya think?- sexybobo, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3That was just mean
- speaker219, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3Site is incredibly slow, here's a mirror of the script (just click and a box will prompt you to install the script)
http://speaker129.awardspace.com/nicecomments.user.js - dasilva333, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4this new comment system absolutely sucks
- speaker219, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3Site is incredibly slow, here's a mirror of the script (just click and a box will prompt you to install the script)
- LordOfTheSponge, on 10/11/2007, -1/+1One more click
- PixelVision, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2although you were trolling teh_techie, you illustrated the problem well. Clicking through images to hide and show them is clumsy and the end result looks cluttered.
- sexybobo, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3That was just mean
- hansblix, on 10/11/2007, -0/+10This looks much better
- LordOfTheSponge, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2So now ai have to click three times just to read my own coment. Or how about 4 times.
- MrCalifornia, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1yeah, all the clicking is lame. So a 100+ dugg comment might be 5 levels deep. that's bad UI.
- teh_techie, on 10/11/2007, -9/+2Haha, made you needlessly click!
- nocturne, on 10/11/2007, -3/+86Still, users should not need to make scripts in order to fix bad design.
Fix it please Digg.- cawpin, on 10/11/2007, -0/+27Ooooo, with those two scripts it is VERY nice.
- Gizza, on 10/11/2007, -0/+17This is soooo much better. Unfortunately it still has the problem of not being able to reply to any comment which already has replies because of the expanded mode.
- Smokersroom, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3Yeah that is a shame. Looks good though! Well done geeks!
- Gizza, on 10/11/2007, -0/+17This is soooo much better. Unfortunately it still has the problem of not being able to reply to any comment which already has replies because of the expanded mode.
- cawpin, on 10/11/2007, -0/+27Ooooo, with those two scripts it is VERY nice.
- jostheller, on 10/11/2007, -4/+1agreed... I really dont want to fix their screw up...
- mink78, on 10/11/2007, -1/+7Well, that's the beauty of Greasemonkey. You might not like what a site design looks like, or functionality. But that can be changed with a script that customizes the page just to your liking. It puts the power in the users hand to make it how they want.
- LycoLoco, on 10/11/2007, -2/+5There's a very large difference between preference and broken and this is definitely not one of preference.
- coolant, on 10/11/2007, -6/+1true.

- nontitle, on 10/11/2007, -6/+3Very Interesting. Nice Job.
- fugazi, on 10/11/2007, -0/+17Neither script was made by me... I just thought I should share it.
- jordan314, on 10/11/2007, -5/+2nice yeah otherwise it's too boxy and white!
- Baconn, on 10/11/2007, -4/+92Screenshot please.
- se7en11, on 10/11/2007, -1/+43Here's what it looks like with the script mention in the article as well as the one mention by fugazi.
http://linein.org/temp/digg_monkey.jpg
Still not the best since it has to load the digg page, apply the first script, then it seems to reload the page again to show all the replies. But it looks just like the old comment system.- interiot, on 10/11/2007, -0/+14Man, I never thought I'd feel so nostalgic for a silly web page, but the old version really did look a lot better.
- senatorpjt, on 10/11/2007, -0/+6I noticed there's no way to reply to a comment that already has a reply. Apparently, it doesn't work if you expand all threads.
- bhattsan, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2eww did you turn off your adblock or something?
- hansblix, on 10/11/2007, -9/+2My screen just shot me for displaying this terrible comment system, but I don't think that's what you were referring to.
- Claw787, on 10/11/2007, -1/+56Is Digg becoming MySpace.... where WE have to alter the UI to have a pleasant stay?
- MrPig, on 10/11/2007, -5/+1No, because no one visits MySpace - and people visit digg
- fullphaser, on 10/11/2007, -1/+1If that were true, than Myspace wouldn't be nearly as recognizable as google.
- MrPig, on 10/11/2007, -5/+1No, because no one visits MySpace - and people visit digg

- speaker219, on 10/11/2007, -1/+9Heres my screenshot of this page with both scripts applied:
http://speaker129.awardspace.com/screenshot.htm- geekologist, on 10/11/2007, -0/+7There is one problem with the script. You can only reply to the last comment in a thread. So it's in the wrong place for people who aren't using the script. Please fix this.
- robdiggity, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Weird thing is: in some cases I seem to be able to introduce replies at multiple levels of the same thread... in other cases it is as you say, and replies only may be introduced at the tail. I don't recognize a pattern.
Yet another bug?

- qwertydvorak, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2that looks nice, and it only took someone "how long ?" to implement ? it took digg how long to make the mess we are seeing. that screenshot shows how it should have looked in the first place.
- speaker219, on 10/11/2007, -1/+9Heres my screenshot of this page with both scripts applied:
- notman, on 10/11/2007, -1/+10The idea behind the new arrangement is good, but it's slow and looks bad. It is meant to help speed up pages when viewed, since the replies aren't displayed until requested. There have been several popular diggs that have taken a long ass time to load due to the amount of replies.
I personally would welcome this new system if they fine tune it more... but right now, blah - Baconn, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Thanks for the screens, it does look a lot better.
- specialK16, on 10/11/2007, -5/+2You people... it's not really THAT different.
- se7en11, on 10/11/2007, -1/+43Here's what it looks like with the script mention in the article as well as the one mention by fugazi.
- god4twenty, on 10/11/2007, -2/+74I'd like Digg to put forth a little more effort to implement a better working comment design instead of having to resort to greasemonkey scripts.
- actorboy, on 10/11/2007, -11/+6Exactly. Especially since I don't use FireFox and I'm certainly not installing it just to view one site.
- mink78, on 10/11/2007, -4/+5Well, that's your own damn fault for not using Firefox to begin with.
- gibsonic, on 10/11/2007, -1/+1i wonder if this comment will ever been seen by IE users.
- Diggtatorship, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Don't worry, I assure you it won't :)

- pyman, on 10/11/2007, -8/+2Really cool... I just love the colors...
/sarcasm- speaker219, on 10/11/2007, -2/+1What are these "colors" in which you speak of?
- S3dative, on 10/11/2007, -8/+112Or they could just change it back?
- RidesAPaleHorse, on 10/11/2007, -4/+2I'm pretty sure this was done because people keep replying to the top post to make their responses show up higher in the thread. This new enhancement makes that pointless. Go through the threads and see how many first posts have stupid, pointless replies now.
- Gizza, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4Perhaps now this will change how the comment system is used. Maybe now more people will actually reply to posts in order to have a discussion rather than to just post some stupid comment. I don't know if this is a good thing or not, but it seems people are complaining about this new system because they still want to use it like the old system, which doesn't really work. If people only now replied to a comment when it related to the comment, you would only need to expand top level nodes that actually look like the start to a discussion you would be interested in.
I don't think this will happen at Digg however.

- samste, on 10/11/2007, -21/+7I like the look of the new comment system. An improvement in design, if not functionality.
- jdc760, on 10/11/2007, -4/+5I'm hoping you just forgot to put "/sarcasm" at the end of your comment.
- hifiDesign, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2I think you just put some words you heard out and about somewhere into a sentence, not really knowing what they mean. The change is not an improvement in either case. The fact that aesthetics are subjective notwithstanding, the functionality can be scientifically PROVEN to have been negatively impacted in the update. For the time being, I'll reference the hafta (or deal with) rule, as in, if you hafta click something so many times, it's a definite pain in the ass...
http://daringfireball.net/2007/03/deal_with_it - goodoldharris, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2I don't think the loss in functionality is as cut and dry as you suggest. Clicking to open threads in the new system is a pain in the ass. But having to scroll through endless lists of comments to find the relevant thread - as you needed to do on the old system - was also a pain in the ass. I'll take the new system thanks. It's not perfect, but it's an improvement.
- specialK16, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2So digging down people who express their positve feeling about the new threading system will be the new trend in digg.com?
I like it to! so ***** you, digg me down.
- adcuz, on 10/11/2007, -2/+21YAYY more to slow the site down..
- uptown, on 10/11/2007, -2/+10Anybody have a screenshot of it in use?
- sexybobo, on 10/11/2007, -0/+8http://aycu05.webshots.com/image/20444/2004170958344916894_rs.jpg
- Plezops, on 10/11/2007, -0/+7there are links of screenshots above but you probably cant see them immediately because you have to click 'View replies'.... makes this much harder to view comments...
- hiPpymIck, on 10/11/2007, -1/+5if you click 'Comment Display Options' then 'Full tree' youll see every comment (except buried ones)
just like before
the whole things slower...but threaded
- hiPpymIck, on 10/11/2007, -1/+5if you click 'Comment Display Options' then 'Full tree' youll see every comment (except buried ones)
- Jugalator, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4Shouldn't there by "Reply" buttons in that screenshot under rationalist's and sewalsh's replies? I mean, how are you supposed to reply to replies that aren't the most nested? Or is that button way down there somewhere?
- rationalist, on 10/11/2007, -5/+49Wow, Digg's new system is incredibly awkward and buggy. Not even a way to get rid of the reply box if you decide you don't want to comment, end up with boxes strewn all over the screen.
Default setting for threading destroys community moderation standards by inhibiting voting on replies. Should default to show all by date, then give user controls to change settings.
This is remarkable in its cluelessness about what makes community thrive online.- sewalsh, on 10/11/2007, -12/+3it's been said that kevin rose got down syndrome recently
- Ramble, on 10/11/2007, -4/+4Do you know what Downs is? You can't catch that disease.
- goatomatic, on 10/11/2007, -8/+4Just click reply again and the box goes away.
I don't know, I like the new design, I think it discourages comment reply abuse.- interiot, on 10/11/2007, -1/+1Yeah, I finally figured that out too. But clicking "reply" to make the reply box disappear is about as unintuitive as you can possibly get.
- actorboy, on 10/11/2007, -0/+8It also discourages comment reading and comment posting. Way to go, DIgg!
- sewalsh, on 10/11/2007, -12/+3it's been said that kevin rose got down syndrome recently
- cpbrown, on 10/11/2007, -11/+2nice or just you're more used to it ... i think the new look is actually nicer, apart from the thumbs, which look dislocated
- uptown, on 10/11/2007, -2/+20The only thing Digg left out of their new comment system was captcha.... that would've made it perfect!
- BlackAdderIII, on 10/11/2007, -0/+13I'm surprised there isn't a captcha on expanding threads.
It could hardly have made things more inconvenient than this system, haha. - orxor, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3But if they did that they'd have to make the site green.
- BlackAdderIII, on 10/11/2007, -0/+13I'm surprised there isn't a captcha on expanding threads.
- adolfojp, on 10/11/2007, -0/+72Fetching... Fetching...
Reminds me of the old real media days of
Buffering... Buffering...- AlanLivingston, on 10/11/2007, -3/+1Oh _Fetching_... That makes so much more sense. I couldn't understand why all the comments needed to be felched. I understand some people pull their comments out of there ass, but still...
- Chompy, on 10/11/2007, -2/+13They'll change it back once the number of comments drops, as it's going to do. This is horrible.
- fitzy, on 10/11/2007, -1/+4No they will fix the bugs, then speed it up, and then make it so it shows all of the comments.
- interiot, on 10/11/2007, -0/+8They'll change it back once people stop using the "reply" button, since all replies get auto-buried.
- jostheller, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4I am completely annoyed at this new system... horrible
- xero9, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4I know. I used to come on digg to actually read comments (as I did on Slashdot). I find what people have to say about articles to be interesting and sometimes funny. This just makes me not even want to bother trying. I stopped visiting Slashdot when they killed their comment system, and I feel the same might happen with Digg.
- RidesAPaleHorse, on 10/11/2007, -2/+1Yet you still reply... So do I.
- Randinn, on 10/11/2007, -8/+2It's true the new design isn't as good as before but really some of these ingrates whine and bitch about it instead of at least being civil about their criticism. 'I don't like the new way it handles comments. Is that really so hard to say...
- tonicboy, on 10/11/2007, -3/+1And yet, ironicaly enough, you are the one whining and cursing.
- nwoolls, on 10/11/2007, -3/+4Semi-technical question: why do the effects that Digg uses to fade in text (the new threaded comments, the login at the top of the page) leave the new text un-aliased? It really looks ugly on the login, but now with the comments, it's even worse. Is this some limitation of the browser? The technology?
- unsavory, on 10/11/2007, -0/+7That's a known IE bug. Works fine on Firefox. But I agree it is ass. Which is why I use Firefox. =)
- interiot, on 10/11/2007, -1/+1My gosh, you're right, I didn't even notice that. I get non-anti-aliased text in Firefox 2, MSIE7, and Opera 9... Bizarre, I wonder what causes that, it must be something the server is asking for, I didn't think that was possible though.
- nwoolls, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1That's really weird. I checked in Firefox and Opera, and it looked great. Now I'm checking back in IE and...it looks great. Maybe it was a quick fix or maybe it's a random bug in IE.
- sint4x, on 10/11/2007, -1/+1Yes.. um,... ie6 is tres garbage I am sorry. I mean, in this day and age, technology that is 5 years old (yes its been patched, but how "patched" is it really?) is retarded.
- speaker219, on 10/11/2007, -1/+4Site is incredibly slow, here's a mirror of the script (just click and a box will prompt you to install the script)
http://speaker129.awardspace.com/nicecomments.user.js- CompIsMyRx, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Thanks. userscripts.org is completely down now.
All we need is a script to fix the overly large, pixelated hands now.- thashiz, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Do a hard refresh, you're viewing the cached images.
- CompIsMyRx, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Thanks. userscripts.org is completely down now.
- xpose, on 10/11/2007, -1/+18I think its pathetic that users have to create their own script to fix digg. But at the same time I am very grateful someone took the time to make the script :)
- sint4x, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1What I don't think is pathetic is that digg will most likely restore their old style because they actually respect the community.
- zouhair, on 10/11/2007, -1/+8So, now the point is to create ***** look pages and fix them with greasemonkey
A new way to make people turn to Firefox
Brilliant - Userfaulty, on 10/11/2007, -7/+3Umm what also works is just clicking the Comment Display Options -> Expand full tree
- speaker219, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Really? Wow, I didn't know that also restores the old comment style!
:/ Look at the screenshot: http://speaker129.awardspace.com/screenshot.htm - xtmno3, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2that doesn't expand anything below a buried post, it also (as far as I can tell) sometimes expands out all the comments (past the first page) and sometimes doesn't. Not to mention it is 2 extra clicks on every article, plus a crapton of waiting
- hiPpymIck, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1i said that too.....er..somewhere on this page
- Jugalator, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1"Not to mention it is 2 extra clicks on every article, plus a crapton of waiting"
The crapton of waiting was what you had before, so people who want things the old way would have to live with that. The reason is simple: there's ***** of more posts to load if expanding all threads. It was before, it is now.
- speaker219, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Really? Wow, I didn't know that also restores the old comment style!
- autoatsakiklis, on 10/11/2007, -2/+1Better comments + expand all comments mirror:
http://www.divshare.com/download/1040680-9a6 - mythandros, on 10/11/2007, -2/+11In protest of digg's new abortion of a threaded comment system, I'm not going to comment on any stories until it's fixed. I'll lurk. I'll read. I'll digg stuff up and down. I'll not comment, however.
- Nidy1, on 10/11/2007, -2/+1GAH double comment. digg down.
- Nidy1, on 10/11/2007, -2/+2...This will be a big loss to the community.
- RidesAPaleHorse, on 10/11/2007, -2/+1Sure you won't...
- BrokenWind, on 10/11/2007, -2/+1somebody needs a timeout
- mehworld, on 10/11/2007, -2/+1One down.... 99 million to go?
- flxstr, on 10/11/2007, -3/+5Thank you greasemonkey (and tlpro) for saving me from this horrible hunk of ***** that is Digg's new threaded comment system.
Place your bets now on how long until this change gets reversed!- xtmno3, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2I would bet it doesn't get reversed.
- TriteLife, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2You're very welcome flxstr. If I knew my GM script was going to be installed 1,800+ times, I would've spent a few more minutes on it to fix some of the more obvious glitches.
Hopefully Digg will fix up the system because they have the capability to make the commenting system better than any combination of Greasemonkey scripts.
- dracostimpy, on 10/11/2007, -4/+1Nvm...
- dracostimpy, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Okay I retract my "nvm"... is everyone having the same issue of, if expanding full tree, you lose the ability to reply to comments that already have replies listed? Seems like I can't reply to anything but unreplied to comments or replies themselves. No way to reply to a main comment that has replies unless I collapse the tree. That kinda bites.
- Gizza, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Yup, thats nothing to do with this script though. Thats a problem with the new comment system. It happens without these scripts too, biggest pain in the ass as I cant stand to use this system in the unexpanded mode.
- dracostimpy, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Okay I retract my "nvm"... is everyone having the same issue of, if expanding full tree, you lose the ability to reply to comments that already have replies listed? - jostheller, on 10/11/2007, -2/+5Honestly... Have you ever heard so much negativity about a new update to any software package? I think digg may have single handedly developed the worst upgrade in the history of the Internet. Digg developers, take note... This gripe is not going away, please bring back the old system.
- Magillicutti, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2They should have just put up the pictures section, left the comments, and gone about their business.
- InetRoadkill, on 10/11/2007, -3/+2Why does Digg want to pull a Fark "You'll get over it." stunt? The old comment system was a bit primitive, but very functional. If it ain't broke, don't fix it. Fark insisted on fixing it and drove many of their users to other sites such a Digg, bannination, redit, etc.. This new system is drving me nuts.
Props to the script guys. It's a nice patch that going to make Digging a lot nicer until the site gets fixed.- Jugalator, on 10/11/2007, -1/+1"If it ain't broke, don't fix it."
It was broke. It cause MASSIVE first post comment abuse and the likes, and forced users to quote who they were replying to (and some didn't). It was really broke. I would NEVER want it back. BUT, this system also has its own set of flaws. IMHO, there should be a simpler more streamlined way of doing it, especially if using the "Display expanded" view, and also have that setting savable. - greatblackowl, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Actually, Kevin Rose has stated on the digg blog that they will make further improvements on the system based on digg users' feedback. That was on the frontpage earlier today.
- Jugalator, on 10/11/2007, -1/+1"If it ain't broke, don't fix it."
- thorn101, on 10/11/2007, -1/+10Why do the comments of people I have blocked now suddenly appear. There is a reason why one would use the block feature.
As far as I'm concerned I don't care if the blocked person exists anymore let alone makes a comment.
[you have blocked **** show comment] ***** NO! - Otto, on 10/11/2007, -2/+4I actually installed Greasemonkey just to run this script. I've always avoided it before. But Digg's new comment system drove me to it. It's just horrible and unusable.
This is now a necessary script for using Digg. - BrokenWind, on 10/11/2007, -1/+5it would be less of a mickey-mouse operation if the thumb-hands icons had five fingers.
- l34NDl20, on 10/11/2007, -2/+10Here's a screenshot: http://image.bayimg.com/aa/bb/ga/ab/b.jpg
- Jugalator, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3Huh? That looks the same as the current non-fixed way?
- rpgmaker, on 10/11/2007, -1/+4Men, when you have to use a script to make a web page do what it have to do you know that the things go wrong...
- SwellGuy007, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Well, I see good and bad points to this change. Overall I find it cumbersome. I like the inline reply box, but don't like to drill down so much. It's like getting bad news every time you expand a post only to be greeted by another demand to click. Also having to change options every time you load a story is not so user-friendly.
I think this is a well-intentioned step backwards. - tbeseda, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2the new comments and the poop colored sweatshirt are just throwing off my whole digg experience!
- rpgmaker, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3I dugg this story to let kevin know that digg is BROKEN.
- rynTAU, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4Perhaps this could be a setting we choose in our Profile, rather than each story.
- weightman, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Anyone try using the comments tool? I am testing it now.
- Ceko, on 10/11/2007, -2/+2I like the new comment system in general. People are actually leaving relevant replies to comments instead of replying only to the first one, the page loads more quickly, the drop-down animation seems smoother (maybe that can be attributed to a new computer) and Digg is saving TONS of bandwidth by having you open threads that you want to view. The only thing I wish they'd change is moving the "Reply to this comment" link inside the actual comment (maybe at the end) or just having the box pop up when you click on the comment.
- lcmatt, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Strange way to "improve" the comments. Thanks for the scripts anyway.
- BrianWGray, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Bah...
- PhilH, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2There's still the problem with the number of 'reply' boxes that appear, but it is a significant improvement. Digg should change it to be like this as standard, rather than having to hack it.
- lhnz, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2This is so much nicer. I just hacked together a couple of different fixes and it's now like a much better version of the original digg. Why did they have to ***** it up so much?!
- saftaplan, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Maybe I would like it, if it'd actually work in my browser (Konqueror). So from now on, to moderate hidden comments, I have to expand and then hide it _again_ before I can moderate. I also can't do 'expand full tree' because I can't open the comment display options! Please Digg, fix this.
- Swift2, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Works great in Safari 3.0!
- converge, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1I like the script but I can only reply to the most nested comment. So it is essentially useless!
- MrTranquility, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4This also works in Opera's UserJS
- fabio1, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3does anyone actually like the new comment system? i can't find anyone.
Seriously, digg could run some usability tests (eg: ask a few random people to give it a try on a different server or something, i bet there's thousands that would give a try for free) before going into production and avoided all of this. - Draven, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1This script "looks" nice, but is not appropriate for Digg. Can you imagine how crappy the page would look with 500+ comments? this example shows 2. Gotta think of the big picture.
- JanieNut, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3yucky. don't like it.i want my old view back. don't care about the big picture.
- nexlogic, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Dunno if i like how the replies are hidden.
- specialK16, on 10/11/2007, -3/+1Oh my God you bunch of whining bitches...
I suggest an option to choose between old and new style. Also, if you click "Expand tree" on top, there won't be much of a difference -
