- randomc0de, on 10/12/2007, -0/+26Oh come on! I thought the reference to a 10 year old cancelled sci-fi show would be well received on digg...

http://www.bionicdolphin.com/cms/gallery/video/reel.php - randomc0de, on 10/12/2007, -7/+26I saw this on seaQuest like 10 years ago. Old, old news.
- korea, on 10/12/2007, -0/+16I hope the boat's engine clicks and squeals too.
- Gerolsteiner, on 10/12/2007, -0/+14Will it get caught in fishing nets and keep Cuban refugees safe?
- Ystig, on 10/12/2007, -2/+15Swim like a dolphin is precisely what it doesn't do. It *propels* itself like a jet ski. It *looks* like a dolphin.
It lacks the submarine's ability to sustain submerged operation, lacks the glass-bottom boat's ability to allow viewing of the underwater environment (you're only looking up and to the sides slightly submerged in this thing), and lacks the personal watercraft's manoeuvrability, convenience and speed.
Consequently, as a personal project, it's awesome (a boat build around a jet cockpit!). But as an invention, it's silly. - surpher, on 10/12/2007, -1/+14i don't know... but is a dolphin the same as a human in a dolphin-like boat?
- renzien, on 10/12/2007, -5/+17Please excuse everyone for not knowing about the dolphin-boat...
- sonycam, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10I can't think of anything looking more attractive to a shark. It would be all fun and games until a great white notices you.
- renzien, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8ah, sorry man. I don't watch TV. :/ It's funny after a quick google search though!
- skatejunk, on 10/12/2007, -4/+11i don't know... how often do you see boats hitting dolphins?
- piesforyou, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7It's just as far away from being like a dolphin as a paddle steamer.
- 15charmaxwtf, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Red_Rackham's_Treasure
It's like a better version of Tintin's shark submarine. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Big news: boat looks like a dolphin!
Swims? Doesn't look like it.... - akatrito, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3The ones in sea quest swam like a shark (side-to-side) not like a dolphin (up-and-down). I just thought I would mention that for clarification. The SeaQuest shark-thingie did look cooler though.

Seaquest ***** owned. The talking dolphin was my favorite character... - Hurricane, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5If you look really close this thing DOES NOT HAVE A TAIL, it is just a jetski with a canopy so you can submerge for a few seconds, and some psuedo-dolphin looking attitude fins and nose cone which could just as easily be made non Dolphin like.
This is NOTHING like a device that really swims like a Dolphin. - YourTechSupport, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Speaking of The Stinger (hahahaha), My favorite memory was when Lucas (the Wesley of the show) was driving home drunk after a party and got PULLED OVER by the cops.... under the sea!
Idunno, thought it was funny. - jedi851508, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I just recently saw this on another website; from what I recall the engine is a modified Mazda rotary, and the canopy is taken off a fighter aircraft (F-16 for the original, F-22 for two-seater). Looked pretty cool. Also, you can submerge by "swimming" downwards, but the craft is positively buoyant, and submerged time is limited by the engine starving itself of air, so max underwater time was under a minute, but still enough to duck under an oncoming vessel. :D
- nofxjunkee, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2unlike dolphins, the pilots of these vehicles can stick to shark-free fresh water bodies if they want to.
- posneg, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2it's more like a submarine isn't it?
- mogus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I hate to sound like a troll, but from what I've seen this thing is serious vaporware. First red flag is the conspiracy theorist attitude of the inventors who claim to be building the thing with good old-fashioned common sense and don't need any fancy engineering training or any such nonsense. All of the videos and pictures I've seen have been them floating the thing in a lake, them towing the thing behind a jet-ski or something, and them standing next to their creation in what looks like a backyard lean-to. I'll be the first to admit that the concept is cool, but I have serious doubts about their ability to execute, especially since it's been years and they still don't even have the propulsion figured out, which is the critical part. Anyone can take foam and fiberglass and make a dolphin with a seat in the head. Making a functional, safe, operational submersible is quite a different story.
- guigui42, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Yes, Hergé had a lot of imagination for a guy in 1944 ... Too bad most digg readers dont know about him

Um, no.
See, the thing is, he's fighting bouyancy with downforce. Think, the reverse of flying like an airplane, only bouyancy scales much faster with size than weight does, so to submerse anything of a size larger than that single man cockpit is going to require tremendous amounts of energy to sustain, especially at any great depth.
Like Ystig said. Interesting as a project, but silly as an invention. - CircusNinja, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Maybe, but this is revision 1... and I bet it's quite expensive to manufacture. If enough interest is generated, we may yet see the features you're after in later models.
- piesforyou, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Precisely. This definitely is not swimming like a dolphin. If it were, I wouldn't hesitate to digg.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3It's more like a dolphin.
- bradleycomer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I remember seeing this thing advertised prior to last year's Wired Nextfest. I really thought it would be cool to see, but honestly, it was pretty lackluster.
Maybe it was the setting, since the only "action" they showed was a video they kept replaying on a small television, or the fact that the prototype they showed was beat to all hell...Now only if they would bring that damn flying car to market. - Gerolsteiner, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Blistering barnacles, if only there was a Professor Calculus today!
- MrViklund, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Old old old...
- dukeinlondon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I want one. Where is the online shop ?
- AceTracer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Fresh Gear did a segment on this...back when Fresh Gear actually existed. We're talking Sumi Das days.
- Nitrogen, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Pic #7 shows another version (there's Angel and Sea Breacher) and says, "The 16-foot Sea Breacher has a 175-horsepower Atkins Rotary engine, and Innespace plans to eventually use a 240-horsepower supercharged Atkins engine." This is probably the one jedi saw. Angel uses the Yamaha engine (Pic #6).
- Informativo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I would like to be inside of it, it could be wonderful!!
- zodieman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1May be old but still pretty cool.
- shark615, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1The engine says YAMAHA on it and is definatly NOT a rotary engine. Nor would a rotary engine work very well in that boat as they require a lot of fuel, are difficult to mount without structural issues and would be to large.
- oskite, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2Oh man, this makes me want one of those Gungan subs.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1>>when's the last time you saw a boat built like a dolphin?
Oh, probably only on the last 10,000 blogs/sites that linked to it. - dougm68, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1i think the subphin would sustain all the damage anyway.. its glass on the top for rice sakes.
- chrisgman90, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0still not as efficient as a Murshaq.....
- Hurricane, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Actually I saw a boat built like a Dolphin about 2 months ago, this very boat, right here on Digg.
- adml_shake, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Think: Star Trek Underwater. Then in space after the whole alien BS.
- andrew15, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1one of the last times Bin Laden was in the United States he was looking at purchasing one of these. Quite a few years ago though. Thing could do some serious damage with a little explosives.
- crossers, on 07/21/2008, -0/+0it's fantastic interesting! where can I find this boats?

http://xptweak.net - rkettner, on 10/12/2007, -7/+4How long do you think it'll be before we see our first collision with this thing. I mean, it only goes a few feet under water? Perfect for a boat to not see... but still hit.
- spliffy, on 10/12/2007, -6/+3...
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -10/+3good one there :)
- scabbers, on 10/12/2007, -15/+4Digg is full of kids who only get pokemon references.
