- SilentSpyder, on 10/11/2007, -0/+32They should make something like that in Grand Central.
- mykos, on 10/11/2007, -3/+32That pic is great!

- PATSCRU, on 10/11/2007, -1/+20amazing stuff....we could use more jungles in our metro stations here in la......they look like dungeons or something.
- orbit1979, on 10/11/2007, -1/+18No, that would be un-American. I think displaying our military hardware, and having massive projector screens with holograms of bald eagles morphing into fighter jets and crucifixes morphing into stealth bombers would be more appropriate to our culture, don't ya think?
Oh, I almost forget the finishing touch, a huge portrait of Bush with a beam of light from the heavens shining down on him for all the neo-cons to salivate over. - masterspy7, on 10/11/2007, -1/+17Snakes on a Train?
- Typhoon2009, on 10/11/2007, -3/+19I don't know; the scenic garbage and broken lights in the DC metro definitely give the Spaniards a run for their money.
- seventoes, on 10/11/2007, -0/+16fishies!
- collinong, on 10/11/2007, -1/+16great question, considering it looks like they are using a ton of hi-intensity lamps to keep the plants alive.

- Flashman, on 10/11/2007, -0/+13Yes, it was. 191 killed and over 2,000 wounded.
This is a nice way to refresh a location that carries a lot of bad memories for locals. It really does look gorgeous. - Matri, on 10/11/2007, -1/+14hobbitses.

- AzDraon, on 10/11/2007, -2/+12I feel like I have seen this in a Curious George book before.
- Simcom, on 10/11/2007, -1/+11Completely irrelevant to the story...
- ZeroNeo, on 10/11/2007, -1/+11How is this news? I was born in madrid (i'm 19 now and left when i was 14) and I remember going to Atocha since I was a kid. Btw, the tropical garden is actually outside of the tube/train station.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Atocha - dasilva333, on 10/11/2007, -2/+10for an article thats supposed to have 'breathtaking beauty' theres only one picture to see, anyone have more pics of this splendid train station?
i did some work and foudn some in this flickr gallery:
http://www.flickr.com/photos/90516589@N00/354899163/ - kestrel127, on 10/11/2007, -1/+9hide a bomb? hell they could start a secret training camp operation in that thing
- ButterBuddha, on 10/11/2007, -1/+8dugg for the digging involved with growing an indoor jungle
- kestrel127, on 10/11/2007, -0/+7Now they just need to put some monkeys and anacondas in there to inhabit the jungle and it's good to go.
- superal1394, on 10/11/2007, -0/+7its in the concourse, thats all that matters. The concourse of an airport is arguably not the airport... but its still all part of the complex referred to as "The Airport"
The rest of the station is pretty nice too, I was there in 2006.
I wish America had a widespread high speed train system like Europe :-( - seneyr, on 10/11/2007, -0/+7That's freaking cool. Would love to see this done in the US.
- DaffyDuck, on 10/11/2007, -0/+6+digg for daniel for being right.
- PATSCRU, on 10/11/2007, -0/+6deersies, fishies, sheeps.
- malvado, on 10/11/2007, -1/+7Wasn't this one of the stations hit the bombings?
- lemieuxster, on 10/11/2007, -0/+6I've been there and can vouch for the awesomeness. Then I got on a bullet train and went 300+ km/hour.
- BigDaddyBucyk, on 10/11/2007, -1/+6 Hopefully this is the public transportation design of the future.Nice to see a government honoring public transportation.
- eean, on 10/11/2007, -1/+6Yea it would be nice. But Eisenhower went with his military/industrial complex and built a superhighway system. So now we accept spending billions on superhighways, but heaven forbid if Amtrak (whose service is really a joke, it has to share the tracks with coal cars) doesn't make a profit. Sigh.
I heard that Madrid is finally getting a highspeed train to connect to Barcelona. Spain's high speed train is currently kind of odd, it doesn't connect with the high speed trains of France. - aranmanoth, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5Some pictures (15) that I took in September 2006:

Not only a "general" view but also how it looks from inside :)
Also I have been wondering, what's the name of that thing with 2 big wheels used by the police officer in one of the last photos? - KungFuJesus, on 10/11/2007, -2/+7If you look at a few of the pictures in the post by dasilva333 above, you'll see that some of them show natural light coming in through a glass ceiling. The pic in the article was probably taken at night.
http://www.flickr.com/photos/godefroylg/204356181/ - eean, on 10/11/2007, -1/+6It's a Segway. Welcome to 2001. :)
- IlJaanevits, on 10/11/2007, -1/+5You must have been walking an ashtray under your nose, because I've been there before the bombings(although I can't see why it matters) and now I'm living close to that place for this semester...never noticed any smell...the air is pretty fresh actually.
- Quito, on 10/11/2007, -2/+6Dugg up because I have lived in Madrid and can vouch for the wonderful architecture of this train station. It's certainly not news, the renovation of this classic train station and the inclusion of the "jungle" is at least 15 years old. Maybe Digg needs to be split into "news", "interesting links" and "photos"?
As for people criticizing the tropical garden at Atocha, it's once again a sign of how people on Digg judge too quickly and know too little. Just to clear up some points:
1. The air around the garden smells perfectly fine and it is not a hot sweaty jungle. Yes, the air is more humid than elsewhere but considering Madrid tends to be very hot and dry for a good part of the year, that's not so bad.
2. This was NOT built after the infamous bombings.
3. The garden IS inside the station just not right at the platforms.
4. Most of the lighting in the garden is natural and comes through the roof. Madrid is pretty sunny year round, which helps.
I love how people are panning this garden because it "may" be an environmental disaster. I lived in Madrid for two years, never once heard a peep from eco lovers and the garden was even featured in TreeHugger. - notfred, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4I remember going there at the beginning of August a couple of years ago. It was far too humid, when you're already tired from carrying around luggage on a hot afternoon, and waiting 2 hours to buy a ticket to the coast. Maybe great when it's cooler, but....
- MedHead, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4That's exactly what I was thinking (I haven't visited the area). Seems like the humidity would be far worse for comfort than any trees could offset.
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -1/+5That is awesome. They need to think like this more often. Birds would be cool. LOL
;- - Flamekebab, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3I speak Spanish and don't have a sense of smell, if that's any help?
No?
Didn't think so.. - garblefung, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3I rode the train from Barcelona to Atocha station a few years ago and passed by the jungle. I thought it was pretty nice, it makes for a good first impression when arriving in Madrid. I do recall newer tracks being laid alongside for a faster train. I actually found the ride to be scenic and while not bullet speed, it made good time. The train wasn't half bad and the service in the first car was excellent - an old man attached an eating tray to my seat, brought me a hot towel and bombarded me with food and beverages, many many beverages.
Old and slow? The Aztec Eagle from south Texas to Mexico City and the Overlander from Wellington to Auckland. Amazing but grueling and very limited beverages.
I'm sure there are many others, but those two stand out for me. - eean, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3The article talks about it like its something new. It was there when I went through Madrid 4 years ago. According to Wikipedia it happened in 1992.
It is pretty neat though. - Y0tsuya, on 10/11/2007, -4/+7Does it come with malaria too?
- PabloIV, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3TODA TUS SELVAZ AHORA PETENECEN A NOS
- dvdcr, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3but the orlando airport is kinda similar to that :s
- estradin, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3That jungle has been there for 15 years. Indeed, the building that houses the jungle is the old station, built in 1892. When the station was renewed, instead of tearing down the old building they transformed it into this jungle, and the high-speed, long-distance and commuter concourses were built adjacent. The roof is translucent, but remember, Madrid is more to the north than Washington DC (more or less like NYC), so we don't get that many sunlight hours during the winter. That's why they need the lights.
The rest of the station, especially the commuter/regional concourse, is filthy, crowded, hot and nasty. - PabloIV, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2How long has that been there? i was in Paris like six years ago and didn't see it.
- transcendz, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2There's also a jungle in Paris underground, at the "Gare de Lyon" station : http://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:Gare_de_Lyon_14_Jardin_exotique.JPG
I'm not sure it's used to freshen the air, though, it looks like being closed. - format, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2I was there 2 weeks ago ( I'm in Amsterdam now )
They have loads of turtles swimming and lounging about too -

Are we talking Venus Flytraps and other such insect eating plants here or are there even more aggressive plants that I do not know about? No, I am not suggesting that man-eating plants exsist. - dafide, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2You write the best post and I digg you down accidentally. Sorry
