please read this before comparing OSWD to OWD
http://slashdot.org/comments.pl?sid=167555&cid=13970089 - Webwonk, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I haven't even been able to access oswd.org lately, so I'm glad openwebdesign.org is available, even if it's a fork. Also worth a look are the personal sites of Andreas Viklund and James Koster, whose designs were both among the most popular at oswd.org. Here are the URLs:
http://andreasviklund.com/templates/
http://www.sixshootermedia.com/Pretty_as_a_Picture/templates/
- EdgeTX, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3@All the people complaining...
STFU and go away.
@All the people knocking open-source because it might threaten their job as web designers
Get a clue, web design in open-source is usually for personal use. Not may big companies will use an open-source web design. They usually have someone create it who is well versed and certified in that area. So to you... STFU and go color.
To the writer of this post... Good find for all the people out there who need templates to learn from.
Great find.
+digg - Jack000, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4hm.. my comment didn't appear.. do I have to wait a few mins or something?
anyways
I'm a regular contributor to this site, and I can say that these are not the *most* popular designs on owd, but the most recently added and downloaded. Try going into the archives and you can find much better designs that have fallen out of the spotlight. http://www.openwebdesign.org/browse.php?page=1&sort=ratingdesc
And everyone should read this article about oswd vs owd: http://slashdot.org/articles/05/11/07/1520215.shtml

ouch. looks like that fugly site could have seriously benefitted from one of those awesome templates.
free too D: - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2this is quite awesome
bookmarked and dugg - r00t3d0ut, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Very good find

Not EVERYONE has a large monitor, and depending on the site - having a liquid layout could throw things off or make the site look very bare and boring. Placement and real estate of the site is important. Look at liquid sites on 30 inch screens and most of them look like crap (if they stretch the content, not just graphical parts). The fixed width is used to control the medium, I have a large monitor / resolution as well - but realize how crappy most sites look when they flow with the screen resolution.
Do you really buy a large monitor to see how big you can see a website? Is it really necessary to have a website stretch to those dimensions? Just not sure of the purpose. - JQP123, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Useful for learning and modest use. Professional designers have nothing to fear.
It does appear that much of the content was "borrowed" from oswd.org. But hey, that's what Open Source is about right? - Hoodooz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2All for it – bookmarked and Dugg!
- liz4rd, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Also, Openwebdesign is a Fork of OSWD. The owner of Openwebdesign used to help with OSWD but then left thinking he could do better. But sorry OSWD was first and still is the best, the reason you see OSWD in places is because alot of the submiters post them on both sites to get more attention to them. Read up before commenting stupid ***** ^_^ kthxbye
- Ace2005, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I love Artica, +digg
- jmkav, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Bigg digg.
- amygdela, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1perhaps you like mine as well? :) search the site for 'amygdela'
- GimmeSomeTruth, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1My brother needs a new site for his foto biz. was debating whether to have do a photoblog or website. nice to have these alternatives
- yugnats, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1cool designs + cool people = great community!
openwebdesign.org ROCKS!
I have been a member there for a few years now:) - Swimming_Bird, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1for someone with no web design experience where would I go to learn how to implement such designs?
Thanks - kevbryant, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1guys, the designers of these templates don't claim they are the best, the poster of this digg did. I have a template in there, and although I am not the best web designer, I simply submit and make templates for fun and for practice. its merely a community for people to submit and talk about designs,
although your rude comments about the designs are useless, I appreciate those of you who posted links to other repositories, I am always looking for more ways to learn and be inspired! - SilverRocket, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Well done, a great way to learn CSS... PLUS all the snobs come out to call this "lame" and "old" which always makes me laugh, Digg++ just for that!!
- pcgeek101, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1damn sexy designs ....
- themuffinman, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2For the sake of god enough with the fixed width websites! I have a large monitor and would like to see it used.
- victoria06, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I just found this site the other day, and Im pretty damn impressed with the templates that are there, I mean its all open source so you can use it as you like, not bad for free.
* adds opensource to top favorites * - chooochooo, on 06/25/2009, -0/+0very nice professional looking website templates for free @ http://www.mytemplatebox.com/
- Digitalmafia, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Not sure this is diggable-they all look like Blogger templates. A few of them such as 'Artica' are just plan bad...but hey some people love Front Page extensions too...
- DENiAL, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Any schmuck can create a stupid layout for yet another stupid blogging site. But where are the oscommerce templates? I have yet to see a showcase of free templates for it. Build your own, you can use templates like these as a starting point, and for a less "blog" feel check out
http://www.solucija.com/home/css-templates/ - whitlock, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I was honestly expecting the list to have Kubrick listed. And nuclearpenguins...you've gotta do something about that pallette.
- kimos, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Why would you want your website to look like the top ten website designs? Boring and unoriginal...
- redshiftct, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0Unfortunately Open Source is not about taking others content.
- ifonly, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1zymic has great templates to:
http://zymic.com/show_templates.php?id=1 - laa123, on 10/07/2008, -0/+0A good alternative for free templates is a templates membership. The quality and design are much better. For instance look here http://www.layoutspack.com/
- JudyDi, on 07/01/2008, -0/+0Another fresh resource with free templates - http://webtemplatestalk.com/forumdisplay.php?f=27
- chooochooo, on 06/25/2009, -0/+0also checkout http://www.mytemplatebox.com/
very nice professional looking website templates for free - diffuze, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Some of those designs are really good. With a few simple changes almost anyone can personalize them too.
- honeycut, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I love the concept of open source design - I just don't like the designs.
- dink, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Okay I have to respond to the meme on this dissuasion board about large monitors and websites.
If you call your self a modern web developer, and can't make a liquid layout look good, then that's
_your_ fault. Unless your client has certain crazy requirements. Most web browsers nearly fully
support css1 at this point. And for those who don't know how to center using divs and css (no center tags). Try setting the margin left and right equal. Yes that's over simplified, but it should get you on the right road. - nuclearpenguins, on 10/12/2007, -5/+4Why do all websites have to look like amateur blogs nowadays? Is this the Web2.0 revolution? If so, it's crap. I have more respect for people who used to code their own Geocities pages.
- rft3rd, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0i find it interesting that of the "top 10 most popular OS templates" the most any one has been downloaded is 1100 + times... thats like saying the top 10 things nobody cares about.
- spadin, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Might be useful if you want to use the money for something that could get you money quick. Other than that, those interest rates are high.
- victoria06, on 10/12/2007, -4/+3@ Nuclearpenguins
You say that the top designs are not so good, but it seriously looks like you could use one of them for your own site
http://www.rivalzgaming.com/
So your saying that basicly you have no respect for yourself lol - ShaolinTiger, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Synatix: Where's your contribution to the open source 'design problem' then? I don't see you doing anything to improve it.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0If you want to digg a site which offers free website templates, fine, do it. But dont make claims that cant be backed up. These aren't the most popular open source templates. Pick any content management system (drupal, nuke, php-fusion, Joomla, etc) and even the most obscure template just for these systems is far more popular than these.
Nothing against these templates, they are fine. I'm just tired of the overblown titles here that are there simply to whore for diggs. - Ryosen, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Why is it that open source sites and applications always look like open source sites and applications? I'm a huge supporter of OSS but there is a major lack of visual design among most of the projects. It's great that so many developers are involved in the OSS movement. I just wish that we could get some of the graphic artists to sign up as well.
- milkfilk, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0The problem is that these are just HTML designs. Not that it's completely trivial to write a HTML w3c compliant etc page... but this is like psuedocode. No one is going to download these and use it unless they hate dynamic languages like PHP/ASP/JSP. The _real_ trick is integrating or creating, say, a wordpress/textpattern/{blog engine} template that is based on one of these.
I'm not flaming. It just reminds me of interface vs implementation.
Good site, no matter how old. New to me. - wannadump, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0*an organisation
- steveman, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0These layouts are pretty terrible.
- rexselin, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Seems to be pretty ordinary stuff. Nothing unusual
- mwace, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1Bah! All these open source websites! They all look the same >.>
No, this is actually useful and intresting to me, being a web developer. Its undeniable they'res an 'Open Source' website style - I wouldn't want my site to look like it, but it is clean and functional.
If I was lame enough to have to build from a pre-furbished template, that template would still come from ClanTemplates.com, even after viewing these. - junh, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0When I don't have enough time, I'll use this, maybe.
- Phragm3nt, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Guys, come one.. most of those layouts are just aweful.
- ekimneems, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1http://www.oswd.org/
Been using that one for quite some time. -
