- hasbeen, on 10/12/2007, -7/+52wow, perhaps the worst top 10 list i've ever seen.
- Dakoman, on 10/12/2007, -3/+35i fell into the trap of buying "beautiful" phones. It was only after i realised that their user interface, battery life, and tech support sucked that i realised you should buy a phone based on everything but its appearance.
- sencha5, on 10/12/2007, -12/+36Uhh, RAZRs are so mainstream now, I see ***** downtown carrying them around like it's their baby. I hate to be the person enforcing this rule, but here goes: Once anyone over 400 lbs owns a certain consumer electronic, said item is no longer cool or attainable. Sorry.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+23Beauty clearly is in the eye of the beholder. I thought a lot of these were rather ugly.
- Kaioshin, on 10/12/2007, -2/+24First of all, this is an extremely subjective topic. What is beautiful for one is horrible for someone else. Second, how the frak did the "KDDI Talby" thing get on the list?
- Raian, on 10/12/2007, -1/+18Monopoly is not just a game
- imacyco, on 10/12/2007, -1/+17What isn't a status symbol these days?
Also, why does the US market keep getting the same old *****? - Smwbigboss, on 10/12/2007, -2/+12I really like the Helio Kickflip.
...Too bad it's not a phone. - Wavey, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9Hmm...
10. Hitachi W42H: It's OK. Not real crazy about the stripes.
9. Samsung SGH-E900: Looks like a refrigerator with an ice dispenser.
8. KDDI Talby: Ugh, way too first-generation-iMac-fruity-colored cutesy for me.
7. O2 Ice: Did this thing get beamed in from the '80s or something? Ugly.
6. Samsung SGHE870: Not too bad.
5. KDDI Neon: Too boringly rectangular. Reminds me of my office laptop.
4. Black Diamond: Interesting. Where's the keypad?
3. Helio Kickflip: Yawn. Looks "cute."
2. LG KG-800: If I didn't already have an iPod, I might consider one of these.
1. KDDI Penck: The design looks decidedly like a woman's makeup compact. - BlindIrishman, on 10/12/2007, -4/+13Do bad I only buy products with all their vowels
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -7/+16These phones look like ass.
Also, what's up with the ridiculous "Web 2.0" logo on this site? Did this guy go down a checklist of cliches when drawing it? Just about the only thing missing is the "beta" label on it.
Lame. Very, very lame. - Mambo, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9Why are some tech items kept Japan/Korean only?
Is it really that hard to translate into other languages, or is there some kind of trade/political barrier that is keeping the rest of the world from having some of these amazing gadgets? - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -9/+17Where's the red SLVR?
My guess is that they left out any and all of the MOTO ***R's because everyone's so sick of them, but that doesnt change the fact that they are beatifull phones.
the red SLVR beats 'em all: http://direct.motorola.com/hellomoto/red/ - ziki, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8i'm sorry, but this phone looks very odd to me, and that's what i think the market will think as well. therefore, it's not going to sell.
as people are getting used to the standard keypad for text messaging, out comes a new phone with possibly a worse layout. me no gusta - eplawless, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8Is it just me, or does #1 kind of look like a tiny purse with headphones?
I like the Helio Kickflip... - DaMacGamer, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8when is that coming out again?...
- jeet404, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6None of the phones really got my attention like HOLY CRAP THAT IS NICE!!!one! There all OK I mean they just don't look slick enough. The point of getting a slick and expensive phone is that people notice them when you take them out and are like wow that's a kick ass phone.
- capajc, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6What a useful list. Umm.
How 'bout a list of cool ***** that normal people can buy _today_? - aacidusX, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5did they have cNet staff make this list?
- wilf_brim, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6I am unhappy that so many of these are not available in the US. I have a Samsung SGH-D600 (not dissimiliar to the 900 pictured) and it is an awesome phone. I had to buy an unlocked grey market phone (mine was, I think, supposed to be for Singapore) because a) I didn't want a new contract and b) all the phones the carrier had basicially were boring and sucked ass.
I kind of wish we would get away from the carrier subsidized phones in the US. That is the reason that we don't see very many of the really cool phones that they get in Europe or Asia. - tackle, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5lame
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5I think he was quoting the commercial.
- TheBigBrother, on 10/12/2007, -12/+17Wait till the iPhone
- eliasg, on 10/12/2007, -3/+7Buried, lame.
They left out a lot of beautiful phones. Nokia and Motorola definitely have a slew of nice phones out there, whether people are sick of them or not. - wileyAU, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5The NEC N908 has a screen from Starcaft Ghost on its display. That makes me sad all over again that I'll never get to play it . . .
- wafflesomd, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I think the Chocolate looks pretty cool myself, I was never really into the razr, I dont like how the bottom feels longer than the top.
- bSimms, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Sure they are pretty but are they crime deterrent.
- Falldog, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Shame that pretty design != functional design.
- Sheir, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4That thing is ugly as hell.
- keikun, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3agreed
- chesterjosiah, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3@imacyco: Because Americans are still creating enough demand for the SOS. When Americans start having some restraint, and choose NOT to buy something that isn't worth buying, we'll start to see some new stuff.
Don't mod me down if you think I'm anti-America. I'm an American myself. I just want newer stuff like imacyco does! - andrethegiant, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6wtf number 8 is ugly as hell!
- ModernTenshi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3A lot of it has to do with the features of the phones not fully working with the cellular networks in in the states.
Sad when you think about it, as I would like to own some of these phones. - Wavey, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I usually think Bang & Olufsen design is pretty intriguing and sometimes beautiful (although many times at the expense of functionality, not to mention waaaaay overpriced). But the circular designs of the controls of some of their audio systems just doesn't translate to the keypad of a cellphone, especially since everyone is used to the standard design.
Can you imagine a circular version of a QWERTY keyboard, with the keys arranged in concentric circles? Now that would be wild...but useless. - techlinks, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3In reference to the KDDI Neon he said:
"I love the clean front of this phone!"
Uhh...ok...so now...totally blank, uninventive, boring, lazy designer means clean?
Hey look! It's a piece of plastic. So clean! Damn! - Finster, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4that black diamond looks stunning
- cclark2222, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4I think the KDDI Neon is great. Wish I could get my hands on one..
- thiagoleon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3The penck looks like an egg... and gets lots of fingerprints also :(
- uzusan, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4The keypad on the black diamond is in the bottom half. its an OLED touchscreen.
- whisk3rs, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Or Sony Ericcson
- Subcranium, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Kinda like the old brick best.
- scbysnx, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2no vertu phones and the chocolate was at the top? ... and the kickflip?!
- ilnyckyj, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4Too bad we can't get cool stuff like that when it comes out...or even 2 years later.
- elfangor, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Nothing that special
- gothicx00, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2@Dakoman
I totally agree with you... too many manf. have tried to get away with making beautiful phones with terrible interfaces and/or miniscule features.
I have Sprint as a service provider and the MM-9000 as my primary phone. I could give a RATS ASS about how the damn thing looks. All I care about is the fact that it is a BADASS phone with awesome freaking features. In my opinion it has the best features that any phone in the Sprint lineup has ever had. Too bad they discontinued the damn thing just because it didn't comply with their phone-as-a-modem requirements.
Great phone... decent service... shame that sprint discontinued it for basically political reasons. - bigbchew, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Dugg for the gallery of old bricks too.
- Bokista, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Alternate headline: "Top 10 Shiniest Phones"
- toweringpoo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2This list cracked me up, I just came back from Japan, and half of the phones on the list, I knew people who had them. The Penck, Neon, and one of my professors had the Talby.
The Talby's cool cuz it's about at thin as an ipod nano other than that it's a bit boring.
The Penck's design is pretty sleek, but other than that it doesn't have much going for it, plus it doesn't have any type of external display.
In my opinion the Neon is the coolest (out of the list) cool, clean design plus--you can't tell from the pictures--but under the plastic there are red LEDs that shine through the white plastic and can diplay the time and caller ID. So it maintains a clean look, but still has a really unique external display. - Monoboy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Actually I think those KDDI Talbys look great. They seem to be fairly small from a Google search and a non-flip phone which is always a plus in my eyes.
I want one, but they don't appear to be in the US and only run off the networks in Japan. - srodolff, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1and you forgot about MySpace Mobile......
