- whiskeymb, on 10/12/2007, -22/+194his hands are probably not retarded. he probably just sees the same problems that I do. Namely, that you have keys right underneath of the right palm, which means those keys WILL get hit at some point. people's wrists are lazy and when they go to type on this monstrosity, DEL, HOME, PG UP and BACK will get hit repeatedly and accidentally.
this IS a horrible design. whoever gave them an award should be slapped. - Qenton, on 10/12/2007, -7/+91Much better design: http://www.arrrrrr.com/
- pingwax, on 10/12/2007, -10/+78I think its a creative idea; I hate having to take my hands off the keyboard to use the mouse (or vice versa) because of a poorly designed interface. I think the biggest problem would that it would be a lot mass to push around as a mouse and it would be unwieldy.
- test5477, on 10/12/2007, -2/+62worst quote too. comparing the splitting of the atom to splitting the keyboard, that guy needs to be fired.
- jmazzi, on 10/12/2007, -3/+60In action: http://www.combimouse.com/Assets/Video/Combimouse%20demo.MOV
- bobviolence, on 10/12/2007, -7/+53If it was white and branded as Apple, they'd sell millions of them.
- LiquidPenguin, on 10/12/2007, -6/+38It would be assumed that while the keyboard is in "mouse" mode, those keys would be disabled. If anyone actually would RTFA, they would find the following passage, "To change the RHU (Right Hand Unit) to mouse mode, the user grips the RHU touching a proximity circuit that detects finger contact. This cancels out the keyboard functions and allows it to act as a mouse."
- debney, on 10/12/2007, -7/+36And people would be screaming how innovative it is.
- CBanga, on 10/12/2007, -1/+29"Features a multi button mouse which is convenient for gaming, CAD and most other programs. It is the best system for First Shooter Gamers."
:-D
I love "My First Shooter" games. I play them all the time after I am done with "My First Reading" books. - IamRinocerous, on 10/12/2007, -4/+29In the one picture, it says there's a contact switch to change modes from keyboard to mouse. they don't really say how its done or anything, but it seems like the switch is in the cavity to the right of the middle body, where your ring or pinky fingers would go. My guess is that this switch makes the right-hand keys clickers.
Its still a pretty poor design, though. And the video is laughable - what is the guy typing that he doesn't need the spacebar? - kprime1988, on 10/12/2007, -4/+25wheres the clicker?
- UnderWurlde, on 10/12/2007, -0/+20I was horrified when I saw the picture, but the movie addressed my bewilderment concerning moving half of a keyboard which seemed heavy - actually, it looks very light to be moved in such a swift manner. Problem? Well, why do keyboards have rubber feet in the first place? To avoid your hand moving around chasing it while typing! Since the RHU seems very light, it would make it easy to glide around (good as a mouse) and disrupt typing. The switching between keyboard-mouse seems pretty straighforward, as some heat sensors feels your fingers as they switch into a "mouse-moving" position but using keys as buttons, dunno. No digg.
- gravis86, on 10/12/2007, -3/+19Actually, I kind of agree with DIGGADEEP. If you watch the video of the guy using it you can see that those extra keys under his palm do not present a problem. The back of your palm would rest right underneath the extra keys, and because of the arch of your palm, the extra keys would not be pressed.
(If you don't believe me, rest your hand on the table and notice that the back of your palm near your wrist and your finger tips touch the table, and the main surface of your hand does not touch the table.)
Now, touch pads on laptops are a hindrance when typing, I can attest to that. - TheCheeta, on 10/12/2007, -1/+15Thank goodness I am not the only one that thought this. Is there really a reason to include f*cking in the description? Does it really add anything? Walter Conkrite had it right... the use of superfluous profanity just cheapens our language. Deleting the f-word from the description takes nothing away from it.
Note that I am not above using the occasional curse word in my writing and speech, but there is a time and place for everything. Describing the apparent discomfort of a computer keyboard ranks very low on that list. - ifonly, on 10/12/2007, -13/+2810pts for the excellent topic title and description.
stewie: Well, I'd love to stay and chat, but you're a total bitch. - grapfx, on 10/12/2007, -10/+24how about watching the language when posting in the description. some of us folks have nazi intarweb headhunters overseeing us at work and looking for an excuse to take some scalps.
- jest3r, on 10/12/2007, -3/+17Why on earth is there so much profanity in the post summary? We should be able to bury a story based on title / summary quality (or lack there of).
I'm sure there are duplicate submissions with clean, well articulated titles and descriptions. This type of thing makes Digg and it's users look amateurish and lame. - triplexpac, on 10/12/2007, -16/+29Except Apple would design something that was ergonomic and easy to use, so it wouldn't be this product at all.
- DJMajickman, on 10/12/2007, -2/+15Umm...am I one of the few that sees the usefulness of this for gaming. You've got 5 keys/mouse buttons that you could program to do what ever in your games. Plus move your pinkie away for a second and you've got the keyboard back for any number of other combinations.
Just my $0.02 worth - MyLogin, on 10/12/2007, -1/+13@jest3r:
I think the profanity is ridiculous too and I would agree with you that the low standards makes Digg look amateurish. - Dunadan, on 10/12/2007, -7/+19Or you know, if you're worried about getting fired, you could just not browse the internet from work. Just a thought...
- Stegg, on 10/12/2007, -11/+22What a sensationalist topic. It takes the opinion of one person and forces it upon the digg community. Were you afraid it wouldn't get to the front page without the words "WORST" and "WTF" in capital letters? How irritating.
I don't think this is the worst design ever, it's actually trying to address the age old problem of having to switch back and forth repeatedly between two input devices. Since you've never used the keyboard/mouse combo you posted about how can you know how well it really works? I think it's a good concept and would love to at least try it out. - OneTrueDabe, on 10/12/2007, -2/+13@Vladek:
"If you don't want to take your hands off the keyboard, just use an IBM keyboard with the red "nipple" built-in."
My biggest beef with the "Joy-Nub" is that it's awkward having it between the 'G' and 'H' keys; your index finger has to stretch too far, pulling the rest of your fingers off the home row.
I know it's in the middle to make it "handedness-agnostic" but I'd much rather have a truly Right-Handed joy-nub placed between the TOPS of the 'H' and 'J' keys (at the bottom corner of the 'U' key.)
And while I'm at it, I'd put a Scroll Wheel right where the 'J', 'K', and 'I' keys come together.
(It shouldn't be hard to make a similar model for Lefties -- ie, JoyNub at F,G,T; scroll wheel at D,F,R...)
Try it yourself -- see how natural it feels. - Alphabet, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11Imagine using this to play games like a fps or mmorpg. And then let's talk about carpel tunnel as your wrist is now moving a mouse AND half a keyboard. Dumbest idea ever.
- grahamcase, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11the concept is good, execution is bad. get some one else to make it, and it could be great!
Alternatively, get a one-handed keyboard (http://matias.ca/halfkeyboard/index.php?refID=7) and regular mouse, and be more productive :D - SoullessDragon, on 10/12/2007, -2/+11Scroll wheel is actually on the left part of the keyboard
- WITFITS, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10It looks like it was designed to work with vi.
- kyeetza, on 10/12/2007, -3/+11Apple's hockey puck mouse was retarded, and now apple's mighty mouse is almost laughable. I love most of apple's hardware, but they really need to get up to speed with functionality in their mice.
- pbaehr, on 10/12/2007, -4/+12So how does the computer know I'm not typing a J when I'm trying to click a button after I'm done typing? jjjjjjjjj (Sorry, just trying to submit) jjjjj
- DaveMode, on 10/12/2007, -3/+10What's sad is that I bet this hits the market before the Optimus Keyboard.
- deadbaby, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Anyone remember the Apple ergonomic keyboard? and no, it wasn't very successful.
http://www.designkitten.com/apple-ergo-overlaid-small-top.JPG - Icyfenix, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7@ sath
who on digg dosen't do at least one of those?? - armbo, on 10/12/2007, -3/+10ergonomic, easy to use and randomly explosive.
BA-ZING! - ahawks, on 10/12/2007, -12/+17Burried for lack of class.
WTF in title?
"*****" in description?
Get some class.
Btw, it doesn't look that bad to me. And I really don't care what the poster thinks of it, considering they didn't even try it. - stainboy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7what an awkward-looking setup. there's no way they'll sell many of these.
i've come up with my own superior one-device solution. i've ditched my keyboard and mouse and now access my computer exclusively via my USB steering wheel and foot paddles.
VROOM VROOOOOM! VRRRRRRRRRROOOOMMMMM! - Llan, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7What is so mentally challenging about using neutral headlines? I am perfectly able to judge for myself, so please leave these remarks out of the topics.
I like the design, it's a real idea. Might not be for me, but I just might try it. - gildude, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Can we get a -50 Digg automatic hit for anyone using "WTF" or "OMG" in a submission title?
- griz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5I love that the delete key is right where you would normally place your finger to click.
- JonForTheWin, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7I've seen it, I've seen people attempt to use it. It sucks.
- MrLunar, on 10/12/2007, -5/+10The reason it wouldn't work for me is because I can see myself pressing multiple buttons if I even put the slightest bit of pressure on the 'mouse'.
- MasterSplinter, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6How exactly are you supposed to pwn with this......atrocity?
- NobleRocket, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6I've got an idea. What if we turn a chair into the mouse, that way we just have to move our bodies a little bit instead of our wrists. The buttons can be on the floor or something.
Oh wait... I just realized that was a stupid idea. Nevermind. - tigro, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6hehe, Im going to give you the benefit of the doubt and chuckle at your joke :) you cant even use a mouse in vi!
- Phocion55, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6"We are looking for investors to manufacture the Combimouse."
Good luck. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7Agreed. It bothers me to no end when I see people put their own opinion in the topic.
- Stegg, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Yeah, that doesn't make it alright. There are a few of us diggers that prefer not to be bombarded by stories simply because they've got the words WTF and WORST and any other number of opinions by the submitter.
- Sirocco, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5I guess if you're left-handed you're pretty screwed. Just as with everything else!
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5@ icy
If you've ever heard of a media center PC, the touchpad on a wireless keyboard is the best thing possible to use as the "remote", as using a mouse (especially an optical mouse) on the couch, your pant leg, or a glass table is just plain awkward. - Kazrog, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6This is a poor, clunky, modal way of tackling the issue of switching between text input and GUI pointing. I think a gestures-sensetive touchscreen interface, such as the one suggested in Apple's recent patents, will be the logical next step beyond keyboard/mouse.
- g33kfu, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4@kyeetza:
What's wrong with the mighty mouse? I like the fact that the (2) buttons are internal, so dust/bits of food/hair doesn't get in the way of the device's functionality.
The multi-way scrollwheel/trackball is the best thing since slice bread. I can't stand moving my mouse to the bottom of the screen to scroll left and right anymore. -
