- Nazuel, on 10/12/2007, -4/+25Not cool khoa. Not cool at all. GIMP is great for everyone except *maybe* professionals, and I leave that up to them to decide because it is their living. I cannot help but wonder how many people who are all over photoshop have actually paid for it. For those who cannot or will not pay the retarded price tag for photoshop but still want to edit/create photos etc. then I would definitely recommend GIMP.
- Dunadan, on 10/12/2007, -4/+21Yeah, go "get" Photoshop.
- shakin, on 10/12/2007, -1/+16In all honesty, GIMP can do almost all the same things as Photoshop. Some things are harder, some are different, some are easier. GIMP will get you the same end result, but you'll do things differently to get there. Some things that are very simple in Photoshop are hard in GIMP. If you're doing print graphics you want Photoshop. GIMP seems to have better PNG support.
Photoshop is better, but most people aren't professional artists. Very few people need 90% of the power Photoshop gives you and I think GIMP fills a niche between very basic apps like Photoshop Elements and very powerful apps like Photoshop CS. GIMP is clearly far superior to Elements. Paint Shop Pro may also be in that niche, but it's not free. - ahmerhussain, on 10/12/2007, -3/+14Why do so many people bitch about GIMP so much?
It works fine if you have never worked with photoshop before. It worked wonders for me because I started experimenting with it on linux, and I never bothered with photoshop. However, I played with photoshop at the apple store one day and found it much harder to use than GIMP. Plus, GIMP is free and I don't have to shell out hundreds of dollars which I would rather use on something else.
Unless you want to be a master photoshopper I really see no point in bothering, because I would rather be a GIMP master than a Photoshopper. - selrahc, on 10/12/2007, -1/+12You're better off not trying Photoshop in the first place. I used a pirated copy before I learned about the GIMP and it did spoil me somewhat. I would rather be using my software legally though, so I have to live with relearning an(IMO) inferior interface. Most of the stuff it is capable of meets my needs, just the way things are set up drives me crazy.
- srpope80, on 10/12/2007, -3/+11Gimp does everything I need it to do..... Plus you can't beat the price or the Open Source community - half the time it is easier to get answers through sourceforge than through a huge company......
- nullx42, on 10/12/2007, -10/+16MsPaint Rocks them both to their foundation.
- jbrown101st, on 10/12/2007, -9/+15If you have any doubt about GIMP's power visit http://www.gimpdome.com. You will be amazed at the work done there, many people would believe it to be the work of Photoshop. There are also a few professionals there, and they actually own PS, but they use GIMP instead (even for their job).
Photoshop is not more powerful than the GIMP, just more user friendly. Anything you want to do in PS can be accomplished in GIMP. The only difference is that GIMP takes skill to use. PS is just the shortcut for those who are lazy (and have a lot of cash). Yes, I would know, I own PS and I use the GIMP. The GIMP works perfect for all of my needs. - idonthack, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4@netdroid9
GTK literally is the "GIMP Tool Kit". It was written specifically for GIMP because no other toolkit at the time could make it work. Separating the two would be a lot of work for a product that will be, at best, only just as good.

You need Microsoft Sarcasm Read 2000 - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3I agree. If you've worked with photoshop for any amount of time, Gimp sucks. Maybe all of that strong alliance building that Adobe and Apple did with designers and schools pays off in switching costs afterall...
I use Photoshop more than 50 hours a week. In February I alternated new client projects between Gimp and Photoshop CS3. I fell so far behind on the Gimp projects I had to switch them to CS3 to complete them.
Most of my work is in photo editing, color correction, proof management and pre-press. It took me less time to learn Illustrator AND inkscape combined than it did Gimp. - GawtMilk, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2"as opposed to Adobe randomly moving things around each version in an attempt to justify the price"
I've been using Photoshop for at least five versions. Everything is right where I want it...I've used GIMP before and it simply isn't as good. - plasticbugs, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Hey, Gimpshop's developer checking in. Hopefully I can bribe someone to compile Gimpshop for Windows with the next release. Sorry the Win version is so behind the other releases. Look for an update soon (including CMYK support).
- shanesemler, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4I consider myself a master Photoshopper and I've used it for many many years. However, GIMP is almost always my weapon of choice now days. Though the built in text tool is a bit primitive and the vector tool a bit sloppy, the interface can be configured the way I want (as opposed to Adobe randomly moving things around each version in an attempt to justify the price) and it has scripts that come in extremely handy for creating textures (make seamless tool is worth it alone). My advice to all those who diss GIMP: use PS, be happy with it and STFU.

sorry, but i didn't see anything there that I would call amazing. - rubycantfail, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1To the GIMP tutorial list, I would add http://swik.net/GIMP
- johanm, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1because im a motherf*ckn G.I.M.P
- AstralSin, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3the only reason they complain about the interface is because they're used to photoshop. i personally learned on photoshop but switched to gimp because i like it better. i dont need pantone palettes as all i use it for is web graphics and i can do anything in gimp that i did in photoshop, for free and legal.
- shanesemler, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3If you don't need cmyk or Pantone support, GIMP is great. And I've constantly heard people whining about the interface for years now. I'm pretty sick of that. The interface is quite good and the ability to move and dock the palettes in any configuration you want is far superior to the Photoshop way of doing things. I've used Photoshop to do professional work for years and in my opinion, the UI isn't all that great.
- deathguppie, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Go troll somewhere else Ayrapetov1 this thread is about "tutorials for Gimp". Not a "how much better Photoshop is" thread.
That said, for those wanting a bit more from Gimp do give the beta level stuff a try, I find that it is even pretty stable on windows. The features though like editable selections, and well.. all kinds of stuff will keep you from going back to stable Gimp. - Smeed, on 10/12/2007, -9/+9I dont know where your coming from but who in the world would like a program that takes more "skill" to use. You can get a kia minvan to drive like a lambo, it just takes "skill". Therefor you should buy the kia.
I dont see how taking the easy option is a bad thing in certain cases. This being one of them. - sequethin, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2Not a free tutorial but the book Beginning Gimp on apress is really awesome too. Full color gloss, yum!
- khoa1708, on 10/12/2007, -5/+4that's the stupidest thing i have ever heard, so u r saying i should use GIMP because it's harder to do everything on there than with photoshop? that "user friendly" thing u r talking bout is what make some programs succeed over others.
- MrSunshine, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2I love the CMYK and animated GIF support in GIMP because it's so easy to use.
Get Photoshop. - jbrown101st, on 10/12/2007, -4/+2Not to nag... But sigs are just the basics of graphics. That's where everyone first starts.
- snuffulupagus, on 10/12/2007, -5/+3I wish Gimpshop would be updated more often...it's the only flavour of Gimp I can stand to use
- gerryk, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0@ Scheissen
you 'nead' english lessons - Ayrapetov1, on 10/12/2007, -7/+4awww all the little anti-photoshop fanboys have been set loose. go get em! digg those photoshoppers down!
- JoshuaH, on 10/12/2007, -12/+9Yeah, Gimp doesn't compare to Photoshop of course, but not everyone out there needs all the features of Photoshop.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -7/+4What really pisses me off is that they require you to run a ported copy of GTK2+. It's probably not 'bad', persay (great for portability), but I just feel that porting a major part of Gnome to Windows so you don't have to use pre-existing Windows GUI libraries is a bit of a cop-out. If Firefox can do it, why can't GIMP?
- maglob, on 10/12/2007, -9/+4use GIMP, but only for small/easy jobs. It's more a super advanced ms Paint than a dumbed down photoshop.
- blankman, on 10/12/2007, -14/+8I've tried GIMP several times, and I just can't use it for more than 15 minutes. Even Photoshop Elements feels better than GIMP. It's just way too clumsy to use in Windows, and doesn't feel quite right. Maybe its better in Linux, I don't know. but if you want to start doing Photoshop stuff and can't afford it, do yourself a favor and spend $100 or less to get Elements.
- Scheissen, on 10/12/2007, -11/+5Im pr0 gfx (lik sigs) so I nead Ps, not wimpie gIMP
- bias, on 10/25/2007, -30/+7Agreed, Get Photoshop.
If not, at very least get Paint Shop Pro. Don't use GIMP. - khoa1708, on 10/25/2007, -64/+12tutorial #1: get PHOTOSHOP
