- cerealjynx, on 12/03/2007, -2/+112Honestly, this is what the internet is all about, finding old neat ***** you'd never see otherwise. Dugg.
- KewlerKid3, on 12/03/2007, -0/+77That's incredible. The Pyramids held the record for thousands of years.
- tito13kfm, on 12/03/2007, -3/+48Older than the internet...
No, really.. it is. - Triachus, on 12/03/2007, -7/+39Always a pissy Torontoan complaining about how the CN Tower isn't classified as a skyscraper. I should just tie a balloon to a string, drag it to 2000 feet and claim I built the world's tallest skyscraper.
- dayoldblues, on 12/03/2007, -9/+35Jeez guys, lay off a bit... It was obviously a hypothetical question...
- indyGuy, on 12/03/2007, -2/+27Someone should take the next step and imagemap this with links to more info on these buildings.
- numberneal, on 12/03/2007, -26/+50i wonder where the tower of babel, which was supposed to be an obelisk, similar to the washington monument, would have ranked among these skyscrapers.
- JoelBakan01, on 12/03/2007, -2/+26And airplanes just bounce off since they are sloped the walls disperses the force over a greater area.
- 89vision, on 12/03/2007, -6/+25troll
- volcom88, on 12/03/2007, -2/+19The Old World hates black people. -KANYE
- xTRUMANx, on 12/03/2007, -3/+18Everyone, please don't feed the troll or give it any attention whatsoever. Just bury and move along.
- KraftDinner101, on 12/03/2007, -1/+16RTFA, there's a second picture....
- jmpeagle, on 12/03/2007, -3/+18some of those were not among the tallest..a few are under 40 feet. There were Aztec pyramids, structures built in the side of mountains in Jordan and Southwestern U.S. that were much taller than that not to mention just about every Gothic church ever built.
I think about half those building are just there to give scale to the size of the largest ones. - Misinformant, on 12/03/2007, -0/+14"Towers" are not always counted since they are just 1 or 2 levels lifted way the F up there.
- cnot3, on 12/03/2007, -12/+25Its less incredible when you consider that they were built by aliens.
- l00s3r, on 12/03/2007, -6/+19Don't forget Grayskull.
- Misinformant, on 12/03/2007, -13/+25No evidence has ever been found to support that the Tower of Babel actually existed.
- m3th0dm4n, on 12/03/2007, -8/+19Aids count isn't measured in feet.
- BedPost, on 12/03/2007, -1/+12Well, that, and porn.
- spudnic, on 12/03/2007, -1/+11It's beyond cheesy.
The word freedom is being overused so much it's losing all meaning. - evvad, on 12/03/2007, -1/+11"Why isn't there a single building designed and built by black Africans on the chart?"
Dude, that picture was first published in 1884, what do you expect?
On a side note, are there any comparable structures built in Africa? I mean to ask an honest question here, I'm curious. - offput, on 12/03/2007, -1/+11CN Tower is technically speaking a "Free Standing Structure" and not a "Building"
- 89vision, on 12/03/2007, -1/+11Look at all his past comments, he's a troll
- jspegele, on 12/03/2007, -1/+11Honestly, that was the first time a digg comment ever made me lol at work. Well played.
- Roblodocus, on 12/03/2007, -1/+11The architecture in 70's skyscrapers sure did suck compared the art deco empire state building and the more modern skyscrapers, the 70's ones look like something from the old communist eastern european bloc.
- pensel, on 12/03/2007, -1/+10Hey man give them a break. The internet was still called ARPANET in 1884.
- nreynolds, on 12/03/2007, -0/+9they are.
- swicepick, on 12/03/2007, -0/+9No he's right. The person who submitted this claims that they were the 77 tallest buildings of the old world, which they are not necessarily. The tallest are on there for sure, but jmpeagle is right - some of the buildings like the Pantheon and the Parthenon are probably just on there to show scale.
- GawtMilk, on 12/03/2007, -0/+8You don't think that the reason you were banned isn't for criticizing Israel, but that you criticize it in areas not welcome? Bust into a Chuck E. Cheese complaining about George Bush and you'll get thrown out. Enter a political forum about George Bush and you'll be welcomed.
Like wise here. The reason no buildings in Sub-Saharan Africa are on the list is that there were no tall buildings in Sub-Saharan Africa that the publishers knew about in 1884. "Black Africans" didn't build 500+ ft tall structures due to availability of materials, not to a genetic fault. - erkokite, on 12/03/2007, -0/+8The Dom cathedral in Koln (Cologne in English) is spectacular. The sheer size, age, and artistic detail of the structure boggle the mind. Absolutely shocking in its scale and age for someone from the USA, where we have nothing that old of such a massive structure. It is a must see IMHO for travelers.
- SRSco, on 12/03/2007, -3/+11All y'all are too retarded to get it.
White Drengskapr who is obviously some white pride racist fool (look at his name, his icon, and his other digg comments) is being sarcastic to prove his point that there are no sub-Saharan super structures, thus proving his racist point. All you morons challenging him to provide evidence of buildings are just falling into his trap. Trapped by a troll. - econojon, on 12/03/2007, -0/+8Tall isn't everything! What about the building with the most width?! Come on! I want to see the fattest building!
- Smalldude76, on 12/03/2007, -0/+8It'd be far more popular if the world knew of its true purpose - to deploy all of America's nukes.
- tmbrwolf19, on 12/03/2007, -0/+7Apparently 'towers' don't really fall into the tallest building category and aren't officially recognized by the committee that measures these things. Even the CN Tower's record has been something of a myth according to some. Personally, as someone from southern Ontario, the CN tower isn't really something I care about and is little more then a tourist trap (glass floor is cool for about 5 minutes). I get the impression the only people who care about the CN tower are Canadians, and even then its only some.
- gthyb, on 12/03/2007, -1/+8A disappointing amount of advancement in the 70+ years since the Empire State Building.
- ncapone, on 12/03/2007, -2/+9to White Drengskapr (since I can't reply any further) are you retarded? He's asking if there are such buildings in sub-Saharan Africa that would make the list. Also, who said Egyptians aren't black?
- KraftDinner101, on 12/03/2007, -0/+7Speaking also as someone from southern Ontario, I too don't really care much for the building, but it's a list! How cool is it to be on a list?
- KraftDinner101, on 12/03/2007, -3/+9sigh, how many people actually DON'T read the article and then comment on other's based on the title?
- crackedplastic, on 12/03/2007, -1/+7The "current" tallest buildings list a number that are still in the works. And of that list, there's a lot that are missing (notably the Chicago Spire).
Here's a better reference of the current tallest buildings in the US (as well as under development):
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_tallest_build ... - cyberdork, on 12/03/2007, -0/+5I thought most historians and archaeologists believe the Etemenanki temple tower of Babylon was the inspiration for the story of the Tower of Babel.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Etemenanki
This structure was 91m (299ft) tall. - Robbothehood, on 12/03/2007, -0/+5Then we can snap the spire off the freedom tower so it's shorter than Empire State. That pissy Torontonian is complaining about the world's current tallest freestanding structure. A balloon on a string would be the world's tallest balloon on a string, if you understand the concept of these records correctly. The CN Tower however is made of cement and building stuffs. It isn't a sky scraper nearly as much as it's an observation deck, but this concerns buildings, of which the CN Tower is one.
- nomoreink, on 12/03/2007, -0/+5Good luck finding a balloon to support 2000 feet of string.
Oh wait, nevermind, I just researched it and the string would only weigh about 7 pounds. (3.2 kilos) - frostw, on 12/03/2007, -2/+7Why? Move twice as many people per trip. Seems pretty logical to me. Oh, and the Eiffel Tower has had double decker lifts for many years.
- spoodigity, on 12/03/2007, -4/+9Like freedom tower? Just kidding, although the name is kind of cheesy in my opinion.
- mortey, on 12/03/2007, -9/+14I don't know why you are getting dug down. That seems like a valid thought.
- SickFinga, on 12/03/2007, -0/+5It is definitely not the list of all tallest buildings in the world at that time. It is missing St. Olaf's church in Tallinn, Estonia.
Used to be the tallest building in the world for almost hundred years.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/St_Olav_Tallinn - jspegele, on 12/03/2007, -0/+4Also according to Wikipedia:
"The builders of the "tower of strife" are described in terms that could be regarded as demonic - the faces of cattle, horns of sheep, and feet of goats; while those who commanded them to build it are punished eternally in a separate 'heaven' where they are reincarnated in the forms of dogs, bears or apes. Baruch also witnesses a phoenix, which the text portrays as a singular bird that protects the earth from the rays of the sun." - hansk, on 12/03/2007, -0/+4thx, that whitedrengskapr guy is a raving lunatic
- Nerfdude, on 12/03/2007, -1/+5...chicago is building a humongous joint?
