- mgsloan, on 10/12/2007, -1/+18The math is interesting, however, the end of the article pisses me off:
"It is amazing that M.C. Escher drew his Print Gallery by gut feel, as his knowledge of math was very limited. Yet, his image is very close to the computer generated image, based on the above algorithm. It is also known that Escher spent a very long time on this drawing. It makes one wonder what he could have done with a computer."
HAH!!
Well before 1956 Escher was very knowledgeable in the mathematics relevant to his art. Hell, in 1941 he published a book titled "Regular Division of the Plane with Asymmetric Congruent Polygons". True, he had a rather intuitive grasp of mathematics, however he was a mathematician and artist. - subscribtion, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8Ah, I've always loved his artwork. Reminds me of a quote: "Without mathematics there is no art." -Luca Pacioli. Definite digg for me.
- mikesol, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Pretty sure it's a requirement to like Escher if you're going to be a math teacher.
- Kazrog, on 10/12/2007, -5/+8This is the math responsible for the Hasselhoff Recursion. David Hasselhoff discovered this long before Escher.
- klui, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5What's in the middle of Print Gallery?

Muppet - BeaMeR626, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4It's sweet to know the math and inspiration behind the artwork. I've always been a fan of this style of art.
- Piper7865, on 10/12/2007, -5/+7Escher is cool ... I've never been a huge Art fan but I've always liked his ***** it's just mind bending ... that being said I suck at math and was never good with transformations and streching and whatnot so the article is a bit too much for me.
- JayWright, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2It might be worth noting that Escher didn't to "drawings." They were usually wood etchings that he then made prints out of. To me, that aspect makes his art even more amazing. The fact that he could etch these intricate mathematically accurate pictures and designs into wood... makes the idea of simply "drawing" it look way too simple :-)
- amadonia45, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Escher is the awesome-est. One of the most amazing artists on perspective.
- Gronkk, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2More likely he'd be using POV ray...
- SeventhBreath, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Yeah, GEB is great...im damn pyched about Hofstadters sequal to that book called "I am a strange Loop" comming out at the end of the month. Just wait a couple weeks and get that instead.
- jayscottgold, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I was introduced to Escher's artwork by my 4th grade teacher. I am just as in awe of his work today as I was then.
- grungyhamster, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Ok, so you think we should all just think he did it with magic?
- mikesol, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Thanks, SeventhBreath! I loved GEB, and I am going to watch out for this book to come out. GEB changed the way I think, for the better.
- dkarlson, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Huh. I never knew what the M.C stood for. That's kinda serendipitous, I suppose.
Anyone remember the Futurama episode in which they went to the Escher-like house -- and Bender kept falling up the stairs?
Ah, yes. Good times. :) - colsandurz45, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Anyone who is interested in this should read Gödel, Escher, Bach: An Eternal Golden Braid

Escher had a grasp of mathematics and the talent to paint and draw some pretty interesting things. For researchers to work out algorithms that would replicate his works doesn't make them any less spectacular.
- sfacets, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1excuse me but: holy ***** this is cool.
- solrac149, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Umm... all his artwork is 2D
Flash with actionscript can drive any 2D effects, even simple 3D ones.
If you are talking about DirectX, OpenGL, etc. -- that would be for a fully 3D environment.
Flash with actionscript can drive very advanced math and create fully dynamic interactive images. - vezquex, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Finally, the famous milk can equation has been solved!
- doomgoat, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1dugg, for math art
- virga, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1heh, it's all abstract algebra and group theory. isometries and the like. we talked about his work at length in my last algebra class.
- andyperfect, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1You always hear about geniuses that lived hundreds of years ago and such. It really is awesome to hear of one this recently. Esher's work is so amazing.
- ishmal, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1This would make a GREAT plug-in for a paint or vector program. Considering that it is a set of transforms, probably a vector program like Illustrator or Inkscape would do better. However, since the transforms are definitely NOT affine, it would need to be generated on a per-node basis by the editor itself. It would not be supported by the file format. But what a fun thing to play with this would be!
- SeventhBreath, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2If Escher was around today im sure he would be a part of the teams that produce stuff like the ZoomQuilt (i know its old, but still damn cool)
http://www.nikkki.net/zoomquilt/zoom.htm - jtjenn, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Esher is a really awesome artists. His art is freaky and weird, that is why I like it.
- oepapel, on 10/12/2007, -4/+3"Flash with actionscript is, i would say, the best tool for creating interactive and beautifull mathematics-driven visual effects."
Personally, I prefer to work with OpenGL, DirectX, or CoreImage to create amazingly beautiful mathematics driven visual effects. Flash is way too limiting a toolkit for me. - perryb, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Aw come on! His draftsmanship was beautiful - I think if his stuff was vector based it would just look cold and mechanical.
- mgsloan, on 10/12/2007, -5/+3I'd like to think he would program his artwork. Actually, I'm sure he would, if he followed a similar life path in this era. Flash isn't flexible enough or good enough in any way.
- mgsloan, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1SevenBreath - Maybe if you like ease of use.
I have a feeling escher wouldn't concern himself with ease of use as much as quality - beers, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0no one using a 64 bit browser could enjoy the flash artwork - i digress.
Love the artwork.
I'll agree that if escher had a computer he would have done some fantastic things with it. - solrac149, on 10/12/2007, -10/+8Dude if M.C. Escher was alive today he'd be making some SICK artwork stuff in Flash with actionscript!
His samples would be all over flash kit - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -4/+1Sometimes I wonder about all of this. I mean, it'll help produce a lot of great stuff but at the same time it kinda cheapens Escher's artistic genius, making it so replicable.
- Wenz, on 10/12/2007, -6/+2@Piper7865 - Ditto, I couldn't have said it better.
I do love Escher's work though. - CaptShmo, on 10/12/2007, -6/+2digg just cuz escher rules...
- SeventhBreath, on 10/12/2007, -5/+1Flash with actionscript is, i would say, the best tool for creating interactive and beautifull mathematics-driven visual effects.
- Hattrick, on 10/12/2007, -6/+1The link klui provided has an animation that shows the infinite zoom. It was on digg ~9 months ago.
