freesound.iua.upf.edu — The Freesound Project is a collaborative database of Creative Commons licensed sounds. Freesound focusses only on sound, not songs. this sample is cool for those old enough to get it ;-)

- kanavulator, on 10/12/2007, -10/+21and it's not just because of your username that i'm modding you down.
- lintmonkey, on 10/12/2007, -7/+6I'm only modding you down because of your username.
- warmcat, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10This is cool, a necessary ingredient for making a Free Music ecosystem parallel to the Free Software one, but the CC licenses are a curious thing when you look at them with eyes used to looking at GPL2.
'' * To perform, display, and distribute copies of this whole work for noncommercial purposes (e.g., file-sharing or noncommercial webcasting).
Under the following conditions:
* You must attribute the work in the manner specified by the author or licensor.
* You may not use this work to advertise for or promote anything but the work you create from it.

I think this kind of service will only really blossom if the content gets rid of the exclusions from the licensing and becomes something generally useful. AIUI the exclusions are there to make anyone wanting to use the works in an excluded way contact the author for separate terms, but when we talk about a single sound effect the result is much more likely that the effect will simply not be used and some "royalty free" one from a paid-for CD used instead.
Put another way, most of the CC licenses are in one way or another roughly equivalent to Shareware licensing, not FOSS licensing. This kind of project -- with a name like "Freesound" -- would likely have much more impact with FOSS-style licensing, eg, if you use the samples in any kind of work, you should make the raw sample set available somewhere too under the same terms. - ASoggyWaffle, on 10/12/2007, -10/+1good thing the site is down
- foxymcfox, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6I've been using Freesound for a while now, it seems they are in desperate need of increased bandwidth. Even on low-load days (AKA days when they aren't on Digg) whether the site will load is a crapshoot.
That being said, it is a great resource...when it's up. I personally use it to heighten the sound landscape in videos of mine, but I'm sure musicians, and others (Scientists?) will find their own uses for it as well.- TJ09, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I've been using it for a while too, but I haven't noticed any connectivity issues...
- mantlepro, on 10/12/2007, -7/+2I totally dig this!
- kewagi, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Great! This is just what I've been looking for to spice up my video podcast, CC style. Thanks, djoek!
- benbread, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Oh that sound clip sure takes me back... Time to play Internet Killed the Video Star.
- haggie, on 10/12/2007, -4/+3Perfect! I was looking for some 70's style guitar for background on the homemade porn my GF and I shot last night before I upload to pornotube and xtube.
Digg! - berfmurret, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1this and archive.org are my favorite places to pick up samples.
- miker71, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1It's not news at all, but I still digg it as a great resource.
- noseeme, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Oh my god, that is so nostalgic. :D
- contradictator, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1Takes me back to the days of 14.4kbps and screaming arguments over telephone use.
