- angusm, on 06/11/2008, -0/+2Reasonable advice, except that the more "3rd party site seals" I see on a website, the more suspicious I get. The scammers just love to cover their sites with these things, usually linked to fake pages (or not linked at all). They presumably reckon that most people won't actually know what's supposed to happen if you click on such a seal - or even that you can click on it.
There's room for someone to come up with a real endorsement mechanism that allows your browser to perform automatic background checks of a particular site against a list of 'endorsers' that you approve, rather than a 'seal' system that can be manipulated or faked. - webkami, on 06/11/2008, -0/+2Try not to have the word "con" in your domain name?

- bradgoetsch, on 06/25/2008, -0/+1http://www.mywot.com/ does this pretty good. They use a browser plug-in and community ratings. Works pretty well.
- vondrak, on 06/11/2008, -0/+1Does anyone really believe the testimonials? I have always assumed they were just made up, like infomercials.
- newstart, on 06/11/2008, -1/+2If you add a "Powered by LOLCATs" image at the bottom of every page I'll be more than happy to give out my credit card details

- bradgoetsch, on 06/25/2008, -0/+1I made the same mistake once. Consulting is hard to abbreviate in a domain.
- leodavinci, on 06/11/2008, -0/+1Some good tips here. I often see companies that try to show themselves as some massive corporation online, but in person they freely admit they are a small company and will talk about the advantages of that for their clients. For some reason they think they need to look big online so people will take them serious.
If you are a small company with a web presence, talk about it! Emphasize that with one phone call they can get a hold of someone with a fair amount of authority within the company, or even the owner of the company. No need to go through 20 customer service reps in India to finally get an answer.
