yeah, http://www.ownyourc.com/ is the best site ever if you like long load sequences, long animations and hvaing no idea what the site is for or how to navigate... my dream site! - stupidStan, on 10/12/2007, -2/+19these sites may be 'sexy' but many of them are a web DEVELOPER's worst nightmare (as most designer's pages are).
http://www.mstudio.com is probably the worst site design ever - you have no idea where to go or what to do - mystery meat navigation is what http://www.websitesthatsuck.com calls it. - thesauce, on 10/12/2007, -1/+17How did they forget www.2advanced.com ???!?!?!
- Otto, on 10/12/2007, -0/+14The problem is that the navigational model becomes extremely annoying after only 5 seconds, thus ensuring that I'd never hire that guy to do any design of any sort whatsoever.
- rhesuspieces00, on 10/12/2007, -3/+16http://duggmirror.com/design/The_35_Sexiest_Designed_Websites_you_ve_Forgotten_part_3/
- Scott2, on 10/12/2007, -0/+13No, thats websides with black backgrounds, hit counters, flashing lights, and a myriad of obnoxious animated gifs.
- mlorimer, on 10/12/2007, -2/+13Yeah, in my mind, websites shouldn't change my browser window, or play music (unless I ask it to). Several of these sites do one or the other (don't think any do both). The design is good on some though.
- soundboy64, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9damn, http://www.javierferrervidal.com/ - this website is freakin amazing. not a whole lot to it, or at least that I found, but reminds me of being a kid...
- alecks, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9this one has taken the lead as my all time beautiful site:
http://www.jonathanyuen.com/main.html - joeyjojo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8"the desired effect was to get the user to explore the site and be in awe of the navigation"
That's like a town saying "let's not put street signs aneywhere because we want people to bask in the awesomeness of our community".
It's just dumb design.
Pretty, perhaps, but dumb. - Otto, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8That OwnYourC thing was interesting until I realized that it was a thinly disguised anti-tobacco site. Then it became stupid as hell.
- mxfreak92, on 10/12/2007, -3/+10is this that website hosted on the apple 2?
- chris9902, on 10/12/2007, -4/+11some of those sites were fantastic.
I love http://www.ownyourc.com/ what a cool site.
anyone know how to get flash at 100% without distorting it like they did? - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6....and all of them are absolutely impossible to figure out how to use. Seriously, is sexy really about not using proper navigation? If so then my sites will remain ugly and profitable.
- dlsspy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5There's no context. I can't immediately see what my options are. All I can tell is that I have a lot of them. I have to hover on each one, wait for it to come into focus, and then decide whether it's what I want or not.
This is similar to audio navigation where one must wait carefully review several options in sequence before determining which one is most interesting. With visual nav, I can usually see everything at once (or at least close to it) by only moving my eyes at the rate I'm comfortable with in any order I choose.
In general, I hate flash sites. They all focus so hard on clever, that even if I can figure out how to use them, describing the interesting thing I found within them requires handing over directions. For example:
1) Hey, go to http://html.example.com/some/interesting/post/
I want that!
2) Hey, go to http://flash.example.com/
Wait for it to load, and then about three seconds for this red box to come up on the right.
Click on the box, and you should see some kind of rainbow looking set of pictures.
Click on the blue picture of the girl with the yellow glasses third from the left.
OK, now four more pictures will come up. Click on the rightmost one.
Now, when you hover over it, a sort of toolbar thing will appear.
Click on the thing that looks like an upside-down power symbol kind kind of.
Hopefully, you'll see the picture of the chair I want!
(of course, only to find that all of the pictures are randomized so my roadmap fails). - brendanc, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5I would say the host is sexy, in a creepy sort of virtual way... but the site is not. That site is horrible actually.
- philrenaud, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4yikes! sorry about that guys, I'll try to get the site back up ASAP.
Glad to see you guys are enjoying the list. Last time the big complaint was that there was too much Flash and not enough CSS - I've done my best to up the number of Standards sites, and it's seemed to pay off pretty well.
Still, the only flash sites I put in were the very cream of the crop. - magic6435, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4yea they all look cool but 80% of them are ***** horrible when it comes to accessibility.
- se1zure, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3http://www.ronemedia.com/
whoah.. how do they do that gradient thing?? is is a scrolling background over a transparent png? - ElectricGrandpa, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3"anyone know how to get flash at 100% without distorting it like they did?"
Stage.scaleMode = "noScale"; - motang, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Some of these are just pure work of art. Very nice!
Digg - fordhamwt, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Ok, that's a bad ass website. Doesn't follow some aforementioned "rules", however, I think the desired audience is probably VERY pleased.
- paku, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3"The 35 Sexiest Designed Websites you've Forgotten, part 3"

- xeomage, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3@JaffaTheCake
You're right. You solved it with that handy "HTML version" link. I have Flash installed, but if I have the option of using a web site instead of a Flash site, I'll do it in a heartbeat. Especially now that we're graced with "Click to activate this control" along with the odd correlation between people that design in Flash and people that think I want to hear music when I visit a website. - joeyjojo, on 10/12/2007, -4/+6Oh! Sexy means gaudy animated Flash interfaces. Now I get it.
- elastikos, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3"(not that I believe there to be much viability in the coming years of flash design)."
Come on, you can't be serious. The faster peoples connections get, the more flexible flash becomes in the future, not the opposite.
I can't see a totally immersive film site for example being created with Ajax being better or even coming close to something that could be created in flash. - philrenaud, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3And I suppose Frank Lloyd Wright should be criticized on the grounds that Fallingwater did not allow for an elevator, or easy wheelchair access, or prime billboard realestate.
Get real: no two designers are the same, and rarely do they have the same ambitions with a design. And how saturated is the market for meaningless mom and pop websites that just sit around with no visiual design ability whatsoever, that display a product or service proudly but just can't keep the user's attention?
Because I'd be more inclined to hire anybody on this list before a generic run-of-the-mill web design shoppe.
People are wowed by innovation, not by more-of-the-same-old. - philrenaud, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Okay, update: talked to my serverguy, and things should be returning back to normal bit by bit now. Thanks for your patience, it's always fun having time to sit around and talk to Diggers :)
- GerryBot, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Genius list - file under INSPIRATION!
- Qwirk, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Thanks for posting this. Very nice group of sites to look at. My personal favorite is http://agencynet.com/ I just like watching the little people move about the little office.
- redrighthand, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I love seeing the extremes in design and what others have to say about usability. Sometimes design for designs sake can leave actual users out in the cold.
From the start you have to decide is the design for designers or customers. Most customers are not designers and just won't "get it". - philrenaud, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2actually, this one was bookmarked for me to look at for the 35 (I compile everything over a course of six months then make the cut, generally the night before).
It stopped feeling like a website and started feeling like a DVD to me, though. That's a big reason it's not included on the list. - mkayatta, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2speaking of flash sites, is there any way to get mouse gestures to work on flash. I hate not being able to use them!
- joeyjojo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2"creativity for creativity's sake" = art.
Art is fine.
If the title were 'top 35 artistic sites' or 'top 35 decorated sites' there'd be less of a debate. But the term 'design' was used. Good design is MUCH more than shiny icons and animated navigation systems.
Creativity for creativity's sake is not good design. It can be interesting, it can be art, it can be thought provoking, but rarely is it good design. - shandar, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I Love (with a capital L) the music on his site. Does anyone know who it is?
- elgato65, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Can anyone tell me where can find information and tutorials to achieve the automatic-resizing pop up thingy that you can see in this link: http://www.satsu.co.uk/branding.htm
Love to learn how do do that. Very cool and useful. - Sassanix, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I liked that song... been looking everywhere to find it.
- OldeGuy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Here's a preview that is 100% Flash, although some things never change
http://www.limbaugh.com/beta/
( Obviously the humor-impaired will never "get" it ) - jpp3, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1i believe the post title was "sexiest" websites, not "most awesomely usable" websites
- dogdoodoo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1http://hehe.mobi - an example of damn simple
- d3sp, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2www.aw8.net always will be my fav
- dguedo, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2[Point One]
When you see a list like this, visit the sites with a designer’s eye. Don't look at the negatives, look at what you think works. This is the only way to become a better designer. These sites are outliers on the web, most have obvious faults, but on every single one you can find something Useful. For example, the use of colors, navigation, or maybe the layout of the page, just focus on what engages the eye.
[Point Two]
I love when so-called web designers make blanket statements on web forums, like; “These sites are garbage [blah blah blah] at least people can use my site [blah blah blah] and I’m making tones of money”. What is this contributing? Maybe I should starting posting responses like this; “Your posts are garbage [blah blah blah] at least people can get something useful from mine [blah blah blah] and I’m making good websites”. - philrenaud, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1an example of TOO damn simple, maybe.
- paku, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Genius.
- jpp3, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I think its funny how the crap-ass programmers/developers who posted negative comments like "I can't figure out how to use this site", and "the naviagtion is terible" have no concept of creativity for creativity's sake. I would guess you're the ones who cant draw, design, or be creative for *****, so you hide behind your negative comments when you see someone who can do something better than you. Most of these site's are designed to "wow" in the visual sense - thats the goal, and I think they all do it pretty well.
- philrenaud, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4The thing is, nobody's forgotten about 2advanced. They've been at the forefront of flash design all along. I can remember quite vividly all three of their past redesigns, they've all been leaders in the flash design sector (not that I believe there to be much viability in the coming years of flash design).
and @ df0notfound: What, are you big on tables on something? - Jaymoon, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Was http://www.cobahair.co.uk/ on the list by mistake, or am I missing something?
- joeyjojo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"When you see a list like this, visit the sites with a designer’s eye."
I think most have here. The negative comments are pointing out the rather poor design of many of these sites.
PLEASE don't confuse the term 'visual presentation' with 'design'. Design is so much more than the surface decoration.
"I love when so-called web designers make blanket statements on web forums, like; “These sites are garbage [blah blah blah] at least people can use my site [blah blah blah] and I’m making tones of money”. What is this contributing?"
About as much as your post. It's the internet...live and let live, right? ;o) -
