- sspooner, on 10/10/2007, -10/+3How on earth can one "raise" the stakes by producing a name that's shorter ?
- AdamTReineke, on 10/10/2007, -0/+14Technically, it IS longer. The other name, Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch (58 chars), is the long version of the the name Llanfairpwllgwyngyll (20 chars).
The recognized version of this name is Taumatawhakatangihangakoauauotamateaturipukakapikimaungahoronukupokaiwhenuakitanatahul (86 chars) and the long version of this name is Taumatawhakatangihangakoauauotamateaturipukakapikimaungahoronukupokaiwhenuakitanatahu (92 chars).
There are several variations however, so please check the Wikipedia articles. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Longest_word_in_the_English_language#Place_names

- mlawrence, on 10/10/2007, -17/+2And they say English is the most complex language?
- samadam, on 10/10/2007, -2/+11Aye, its the most complex, but correspondingly one of the shortest. We have so many discrete words that we don't need to use as many long compound words like this one.
- hrvatski, on 10/10/2007, -6/+3Complexity is relative, but most people would find Australian aborignal and South American languages the most complex. English should be among the simplest, although again, that's relative.
- DiamondIce, on 10/10/2007, -4/+3It's not the most complex. It's the hardest to learn. The reason it's hard to lean isn't because of it's complexity, but more for it's proliferation of slang words and common mispronunciations. At least that's what my English teachers always taught me.
- madamme, on 10/10/2007, -1/+9Actually, Icelandic is supposed to be the hardest language to learn.
- Hayaemsay, on 10/10/2007, -2/+2Who dugg him down? He is correct.
- SteveMax, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2English is not complex at all, it's the simplest Germanic language out there (no declinations, no verbal conjugation, no gender distinction, very few verbal modes...). This simplicity makes it easy for people around the world to learn it as a second language, helping in its worldwide adoption.
- fpcyber, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Agreed with SteveMax. French and Spanish are way harder than English. Verbs in english are painfully easy to conjugate, sentence structure is much easier in english. The only thing that makes english more complex as you say is the fact that slang was introduced.

- sanman, on 10/10/2007, -1/+7The name on the sign that marks this hill is 'Taumatawhakatangihangakoauauotamateaturipukakapikimaungahoronukupokaiwhenuakitanatahu', which translates roughly as The summit where Tamatea, the man with the big knees, the climber of mountains, the land-swallower who travelled about, played his flute to his loved one. At 85 letters, it is one of the longest placenames in the world.
Another even longer form has 92 letters (Tetaumatawhakatangihangakoauaotamateaurehaeaturipukapihimaungahoronukupokaiwhenuaakitanarahu), and has been entered into the Guinness Book of Records as such. It is apparently more recent, or perhaps more formal. There are claims that the second version of the name, which is now shown on the sign, has been in use all along by local Māori. The Welsh argue that this version has been contrived to be longer than Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch, which some others argue was contrived to be the longest British place name in the first place.
