- divergentdave, on 10/12/2007, -1/+74a.k.a. world's most expensive windchime
- eggstylin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+19It's amazing what detail he went to: even o-rings and paper-thin gaskets are suspended alongside transmission gears and tiny screws. That's fantastic!
- guytoronto, on 10/12/2007, -1/+17For a moment there, I thought I was witnessing a Transformer's autopsy.
- roket21, on 10/12/2007, -0/+14...a little breeze came along and knocked the car down...
on a more serious note, the exhibit is really awesome. - gutterboy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+12Wow, that is incredible. Look how many gear rings there are for a seven gear car. Man I thought I was BA for assembling a 2000 piece Lego set.
- jmaiurano, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11Not exactly something you'd want to get tangled up.
- hitkaiser, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11I just saw the exhibit on Saturday (2 days ago) and i was wondering about how many people it took to make it and how long it took!
Found it curious how there were MANY names inscribed on the inside panel of the spoiler, I wonder who exactlty they are (engineers?)
I even took some more photos of it, heres a link:
http://www.flickr.com/photos/hitkaiser/sets/72157594219254624/ - graphicNature, on 10/12/2007, -5/+12There is no U.S. F1 team...
- darwin22, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7very cool. Too many ads/adware on that site though.
- snypa, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Very very cool. Beats a built model anyday (in terms of explaining the engineering aspects etc.)
- samfishercell, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Wow. I can't even begin to imagine how much time that took to assemble.
- DrAegoon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4You have a source for that? The numbers I could find (which, admittedly, aren't the best) seem to indicate around $70 million per America's Cup team and anywhere from $75 million to $500 million per F1 team. If you have different numbers I'd like to see them.
- hasbeen, on 10/12/2007, -4/+7As graphicNature said, there is no U.S. team anymore and Ferrari isn't winning all the time. They dominated a few years before 2005, but completely failed in 2005. Renault still has the upper hand this season, thought that seems to be changing slightly. That's a good thing though because it makes the Drivers championship more exciting.
- akashra, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I have to wonder how much of it is accurate though, and how old it is. It's well known in the industry that Honda have a very advanced carbon-fibre gearbox, and they keep details, even photographs etc of it very tightly controlled.
It would be doubtful they would show it in any detail useful to the other teams. Judging from the bodywork though, that car is a few years old. - aelias, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4It's....it's the sound of desktops being born all over the world.
I'm a religious F1 fan, Ferrari IS coming back (3 wins in a row now, with a modification ban for the rest of the season=Shot at the Title.), and this is possibly the coolest thing I've seen all year.
Can't believe this is the first I've heard of it.
/and it is not the current car, for obvious technical secrecy reasons - DoctorNo, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3I know you're kidding, but the tires are suspended on the second picture.
- ninxmz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Incredible exhibit. It just goes to show how complicated F1 cars are. It'd be really cool to see this one in person.
- winstonc, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2The Accord ad isn't CGI. The apparent violations of conservation of energy -- when the wheels roll uphill, happened because the wheels had weights inside of them. The ad took something like 605 takes. Actually, there is a tiny bit of CGI: the ad was filmed in two parts, and stitched together with a little computer work.
http://www.snopes.com/autos/business/hondacog.asp - HRF1, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Business F1 magazine's estimated spendings for the 2006 season.
McLaren: $400m
Toyota: $393m
Honda: $382m
BMW: $378m
Ferrari: $329m
Renault: $300m
Red Bull: $201m
Williams: $134m
Super Aguri: $95m
Midland: $75m
Toro Rosso: $66m - rabid_monkey, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2It would be cool if they could somehow hide all the wires....or digitally edit them out...lol
- therippa, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3bah, I've got strings and a meth problem too.
- ohnnyj, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Although the content may be good I could do without the popups and plethora of ads.
- tsk1979, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5Honda are really good at innovation, not just in their products, but also in hiring the best idea spinners for their campaigns. For example their advert of the accord, which involved no cgi, was a true master piece, and so is the civic ad.
Accord ad : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AdZxe-kKjOQ&search=honda%20advertisement
Civic ad :
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2HYgejEhty0&search=honda%20advertisement - akashra, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2It frustrates me seeing motorsport/racing where they've just butchered a road car to become a 'race' car. They're mostly a joke. If you want a race car, you buy a race car. Not some POS road car with all parts pulled out of it. Obviously the average Joe can't afford an F1, but there are plenty of categories in the 'affordable' range, starting at Karting all the way through categories like Formula Vee, Formula Ford/Renault/Vaxhaull/whateverthelocalequivelantis which can be done on a few thousand dollar budget a year.
- Godspeed, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2you just know its gonna get tangled sooner or later
- chthonic, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2i saw a similar (but i guess less impressive?) installation in philadelphia a few years ago (2002), but with a VW bug.
http://www.icaphila.org/exhibitions/past/ortega.php
"Damián Ortega's first United States solo museum exhibition, Cosmic Thing, is an extended and humorous meditation on one of Mexico's most potent symbols of Westernization and mass production: the Volkswagen Beetle. For this installation, Ortega (b. 1967, lives and works in Mexico City) employs photography and a sculptural decomposition of his personal VW Bug, suspended from ICA's 30' bay ceiling. Ortega's work explores the political and cultural currency found in everyday objects and images especially as they relate to his native Mexico. These works continue Damián's participation in a history of satire stretching through DaDa, political cartooning, and conceptual art." - deviantlnx, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1how awesome is that!
- VyRuZ, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Because you are using IE ?
- knuckleskin, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3I saw this at the London Motorshow last Friday. I imagine it would be quite impressive if you liked Formula 1.
- Radardog, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Agreed. That mosquito was awful.
- sax1johno, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Reminds me of Gunther von Hagens's "bodyworlds" exhibit, but for a car. Amazing how much it helps in understanding how these things are made (and how complicated they really are).
Digg...Dugg. - Cr0z, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I saw this at the car show on last monday, it was incredible, looked even better than in the pictures, just the amount of detail of the car it showed was fascinating.
- john570, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1No digg for having the most annoying ad ever.
- chongy5, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1This was at the London Motor Show. Saw it in person. The person 'minding' the car told us not to go too close because several parts had fallen off on previous days.
- aviazn, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Haha, the best part is having Garrison Keilor narrate that one line at the end. I grew up listening to his radio show and hearing his voice at the end always throws me... I have no idea how Honda got the idea to have him do ad, lol...
- kevyn, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1ditto...does anyone have a mirror?
- SVPirate, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Oh. Wow.
- missflibbles, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Drawing a picture to scale--not so creative. Plenty of people do it, and it's not really that neat of an idea. Difficult and time consuming, I'm sure, but not a new idea.
Suspending all the parts of a car from wires? Novel idea. - byrons, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Go Button!! I think ole Jens is going to make a slight come back, I feel it in my bones.
Pity about losing a podium over the weekend but there are still 6 more races to go, he can get a couple.
Nice to see a real challenge in F1 for a change. Alonso vs Schumacher, this season is hotting up.
F1 forever. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I can't wait to see this but I think the site is suffering from the Digg effect :)
- smohan123, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2Way cool. I've saved a few of the images to show my friends. They're gearheads, so they'll love this stuff.
Formula One is so intense, too. I'd love to see the innerworkings of such a car in person.
I didn't read through all of the article, as I am busy with other things at the moment, but was it stated what kind of wires were used to hold up the parts of the car? I imagine something pretty strong.
Excellent digg! - llarbkd, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2Ferrari is coming back.
Anyways... I saw this a while ago. But it is still cool. And it's still plastered to my desktop. - JackOpfor, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1This is sweet. As a gearhead and CAD user this effing cool.
- Wedge1212, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2very cool
- dypeterc, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0That f'in zap ad ruined that web page.
- compavion, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1"Okay guys. Quit screwing around! We have a race tomorrow!"
Very cool over all. I would definitely like to see more pieces like this one. An F-22 or a NASCAR? Too badass. - jbenson2, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2I wonder how he will move the project?
- caspianv2399, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Very cool...
