I'm just a fan of irony. - crazlunatic, on 10/12/2007, -1/+36howcome your site couldn't survive the digg effect?
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+22Hey! Thanks for actually writing a meaningful story to summarize the article. Cheers!
- lucianolev, on 10/12/2007, -0/+18Well, I guess we are all fans of irony: The website is down. LOL
- Tricycles, on 10/12/2007, -1/+17http://duggmirror.com/design/Surviving_the_Digg_Effect/
just getting ready - Jernej, on 10/12/2007, -0/+16The website talking about the digg effect FAILED under the digg effect.
priceless!
- Konstantino, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10You know your advice must suck when your own website can't seem to follow what it's advertising.
- biffsputnik, on 10/12/2007, -4/+14168 Diggs and server not responding.. "Surviving the Digg Effect" ??
Buried as inaccurate. - dutter, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11Maybe Digg needs a Buried as Ironic option.
- manifestdata, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9"Kiff, we have a conundrum." -Zap Brannigan
- Cactus44, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8Nerds??? I'm offended.
We're geeks. - mrgordeszka, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7There is a cool tip about how to get notified if you are being dugg. Just search for your domain on digg and sign up for the RSS feed. Dugg!
- Vorrel, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Steps to make a fool of yourself on Digg:
1. Build low bandwidth website
2. Obtain dedicated hosting
3. Claim you know how to survive Digg
4. Succumb to the Digg effect - fluxion, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7@Jernej
it happens time and time again.
apparently the lesson here is that the key to surviving the digg effect is to not write articles on how to survive the digg effect - checksumz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5The site is down, how ironic.
- tsunamisteve, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Why do people digg these stories???? Obviously the message isn't getting out there because "Survive the Digg Effect ZOMG!" stories make the front page every week and yet tons of sites get killed by Digg.
- TheRealPod, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4This is asking for it. Just like things that say "unbreakable" on it.
- McTendo, on 10/12/2007, -4/+8What if your website is Digg itself? Can Digg digg itself to the frontpage linking to digg.com?
I got nothing. - xxTazxx, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Maybe he should have followed his own advice...digg effect strikes again!
- greengiant2684, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6anyone else remember when digg dugg fark and fark farked digg? i thought the intertubes were going to implode
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4http://creativebits.org/oh_the_irony
- Vanadium, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I had a good technical write up on optimizing LAMP/Wordpress to survive the digg effect a few weeks ago on my blog. Perhaps these guys should have read it first! :-)
- MyNameIsJoe, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Somebody has already done that. http://digg.com/playable_web_games/How_to_Keep_Diggers_Busy_for_Hours
- mijlee, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Just searched for Creativebits.org and only came up with one result, and that was because the domain was in the body of the digg post. Where do you search by domain?
- i4mt3hwin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3FTA : "The other reason is people click on everything that has a slight hint of sex."
So true. - syuusuke, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Digg should make a section called "Digg Survival Guide." There is at least one or more articles about protecting yourself from the Digg effect a week.
- skilless, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2125K+ hits over a couple days? When my site was dugg I got 400k hits the first day. Perhaps it's actually 125k unique visitors? Page views?
- k0rd, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Pretty good article...
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2You have to select to search within the url not body.
- Alex76, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Nice article. I don' t know if I would agree with the statement that Digg users are nerds though... ;-)
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Looks like there is one more rule to add:
Never have 2 articles hitting the home of digg at the same time:
http://digg.com/design/Surviving_the_Digg_Effect
http://digg.com/apple/Complete_Guide_To_OSX_Keyboard_Shortcuts
That's a bit too much even for a dedicated server. :) - rYno, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Is it IRONIC that the site is down... because OF the digg effect? unreal.
- jobeus, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Dugg cuz the site's down... heh.
- bmeshier, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Most sites fall to the digg effect because of a poorly configured web or database server. These issues can easily be fixed with a few tweaks. A few thousand hits an hour is not that much!
http://meshier.com/2007/03/07/tuning-apache-mysql-for-high-traffic-availability/ - gharding, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Only if you have a ***** dedicated server or really trashy code.
- Maajabu, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Quite interesting infomation, will put it in mind
- Oatmeal, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2To his defense it looks like he's got two stories on the homepage right now:
http://creativebits.org/keyboard_shortcuts_in_os_x
Not that it makes him look any less foolish, but still - abm24, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2It's ironic that the site that hosting this article didn't survive the digg effect. :)
- FatalFantasy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Lol, the site got pwned.
That's pretty much the definition of Irony.
and 50K hits per day is nothing... - ibgarrett, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2It's been effected... the little wheel spins and spins, but no site shows up. :(
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Before: http://creativebits.org/files/cpu_before.gif
After: http://creativebits.org/files/cpu_after.gif - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1http://creativebits.org/oh_the_irony
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I think hitting the home page with two articles at the same time was unaccounted for. Plus it seems to me some people may have took the article as a challenge to actually DOS attack it. Either way, I have to agree. I made a food out of myself. The server was down for almost an hour.
- TylerLemieux, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Just thought I'd throw in a link for my friends Bryan Le and Dave Jakowenko, they run SurviveDigg.com and are doing a great job so far. Nice read by the way.
- oracleofmist, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3@biffsputnik: you need to learn and so i will make an example out of you. 168 diggs != site views. I doubt that 168 people digging a site will make the site react with "omfg digg effect need to terminate!" 168 diggs means that 168 people decided to click the Digg It button. Many people (myself included) click the article link before even decided whether or not to digg an aritcle. Also Digg articles are not there for just members, everyone can view digg stories and if they are not a member they are just restricted from digging the story. Learn! Now! DIGGS != SITE VIEWS
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1125K uniques. Thanks for the correction.
- liamfly, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Oops wrong story.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Yeah, I you guys are so right, I made a fool of myself. But than what are the chances of two articles hitting the front page within 15 minutes? I never accounted for that. creativebits is running on a dedicated server and the database is set-up on another machine separately. So, there is plenty of power, but this was DOS guys! :D
Anyway, it has recovered now. Thanks for the patience. - brstilson, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2Oh Irony of ironies
- kid625, on 04/19/2009, -0/+0There are few concepts within this article I like. Leveraging off peak hours is a good advice. Great article!!
