- Jong, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Interesting tutorial. Also see the free Luce plugin for a similar effect at:
http://amicoperry.altervista.org/luce/main.html - Achra, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I really think that the original picture was much better than the end product..
- davdav, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2The end product is terrible.
- Siraris, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Why do you have to hate? It's a cool tutorial
- wizgha, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I can understand this may be great for complete novices, but at least the author could have taken a couple of additional steps to make the final image at least half-decent.
- TimmyK., on 10/12/2007, -1/+3I don't think the final image is that good. Looks like an obvious Photoshop job. I definitely wouldn't mistake this for a real image.
- InvisionUK, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"Nothing anybody with any experience at all in PS wouldn't know."
But you know what? Even they had to learn it somewhere. Don't hate the tutorial just because it's too basic for you. - Braulio, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2404notfound: Why not just stay out of submitted Photoshop stories if they've been "done to death."? The title states what it's about, ANOTHER tutorial, yet you still walts in here. Obviously, some people liked it, and even suggested a plugin to do similar work for you. It was helpful and resulted in more help, until you came along of course.
- ThankTheCheese, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0cool.
this image works far better than the one used int he tutorial tho:
http://www.sxc.hu/browse.phtml?f=view&id=430240
I used it and it looks so real! :D - soulcages01, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0the result is an obvious fakery and the stone is completely washed out - no digg - this tutorial sucks
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Utter arse. Would have looked much better if only the upper "beams" were used and the blurring on the floor and colonades was removed. Undigg
- Rounin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Ctrl-J doesn't work with CS2
- dimatt, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0i think the final product looks like crap :|
- megatron, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0i think it looks a bit poo.
- rohcky, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0End product too washed out. Lame
- JC-Sharp, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Man, It gets really annoying seeing all these people in here complaining especially for the reason that "Every PS Vet Knows This". But not everyone is a photoshop vet, I myself have been looking for something like this to do the "heavenly light" type thing to a photo I have of a doorway for a mock album cover for a friends band.
I wish people could realize that not everyone on the Internet is a vet at every app. Or at least quit bitching about it. - digger247, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Why would we care, i mean if we really needed the tutorial, we would go google it.
- InvisionUK, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Nice tutorial.
Just a shame it's the only decent tutorial on the site. Especially the tutorial that apparently makes images more interesting and involving by daubing paint and smearing it everywhere. That one is hideous. - BattleFarm, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0BTW, sorry some of you industry pros were a tad bit upset over the whole thing not being called "God Rays", I designed this tutorial for new photoshop users. I am also running a site that requires google indexing and I thought the title "Rays of Dusty Light" was a bit more descriptive link to people who are interested in learning photoshop.
I have been using photoshop for 13 years, and I am sorry I never knew they were called "God Rays" myself.
I am sorry, lol I may seem very arrogant, but I speak to you as a humble man. If you would like to see some of my real work, I challenge you to come to www.battlefarm.com and lets tango with photoshop in a 1 on 1 photoshop battle. I will let you go first :)
cheers,
E

I'd like to see your Photoshop Tutorial Bookmarks. - Chris_F, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Nothing anybody with any experience at all in PS wouldn't know.
- dj_sea2005, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0great stuff! if not for real pictures, i can think of a million uses for this for my trance/dance music cover art.
+digg - BattleFarm, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Not sure who put my tutorial up on their page instead of directly linking it to mine. Seems like someone was wanting some hits using my work :( sorry about that guys.
As of the tutorial, I am not sure why a lot of folks are judging it like I submitted it to a photoshop contest. If you are looking for the effect in a good image:

Sorry, I was not trying to impress anyone with the tutorial images, I just wanted to share some of my knowledge. Its about giving back, and having good karma baby! :/ - trooz1, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1To all those complaining: why waste your ***** time to comment on something you don't like. Ignore it and move on.
I know there are photoshop tutorials all over the place. I don't have all the ***** time in the world to browse all 5 million of them though. So frankly, I don't mind if every so often a cool one shows up on the frontpage. That's what digg.com is for, finding things that you might not otherwise find without some work. If that makes me a lazy person, so be it. And if you're going to complain about my laziness, go the ***** away. Digg isn't for you. Go look ***** up on your own without me having to recommend it to you, because it's "lazy like that". And if you do stay, and don't like something, don't digg it, and don't waste your sweet precious time on commenting on it! - diggimurf, on 02/06/2008, -0/+0good find!
- Chris_F, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"But you know what? Even they had to learn it somewhere. Don't hate the tutorial just because it's too basic for you."
I didn't have to read any tutorials to figure out what the basic tools and filters of PS did. Anyone could spend a half-hour with it and do that. - Merlinhoot, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I thought the other tutorial on the forum that this was found at about removing selection debris was more interesting.
http://www.komprehend.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=399 - trooz1, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I thought this one was interesting, btw!
- soljin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"1) "streams of dusty light" are called "God rays" in the effects industry."
ahahahaha industry term. It's called a "volumetric lighting effect". Sorry salesman don't know what "industry " your in. - Dummies102, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0the picture at the end looks terrible.
- foshizol, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"404notfound: Why not just stay out of submitted Photoshop stories if they've been "done to death."? Dude its not just Photoshop it's every category of Digg. The same ***** post to every article it's getting ridiculous. It's always the same ***** "DUPE, No Digg, -digg".
If you don't like it don't digg. Don't put in your lame ass comments . I want to read the comments section because sometimes people post even better links or have something important to add. - andreizilla, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Pretty cool. Peep dis: http://andreib.com/~after/shiznit/light_tree/light_tree.jpg
- andreizilla, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Oh, and you can get teh PSD for dat too: http://andreib.com/~after/shiznit/light_tree/
- Warptera, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Ahh... Why did this get front page? This is a tech news site.... Anybody could have gone to a PS tutorial site and easily found this information.
- Amplix, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I would have used a different source picture, that one is horrible. Maybe I could digged it then.
- salsaman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I create visual special effects for a living. A few things...
1) "streams of dusty light" are called "God rays" in the effects industry.
2) The rays are not coming from the right direction. Check out the shadows in the source image. Sheesh...
3) The result looks terrible. - plasticmind, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0@Warptera
Good point. This is a tech news site. I've got some interesting music news, but I'm not posting it here, because this is tech stuff. Let digg launch a new focus and I'm there. - MOGua, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0shouldn't the stream of dusty light come through the entire door and not just where we can see the sky?
- fireport, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0saw it on dqs a while back! nice btw
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0very good digg everyone should use new techniques!
- Elxx, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Yeah, end result is terrible...
- linker3000, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Yawns of total indifference
- t3hX, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Personally, I think the final result sucks...
- falloutsyndrome, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0not bad

man, thats got to be the most rediculous thing i've read all day. Thank you for amusing me.
wait, wait "God Rays" BWHAHAHAHA! Now thats hilarious, especially cause he seems to be serious - theprez, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0No offense but 1st, this is not news.
This is something old and I think shouldn't be dugg. There are plenty of tutorial sites with much better info than this particular effect which is very common and did not yield very good results anyway.
Creative beginners go to the creativecalf.net and more advanced go to the creativecow.net You can find very useful info there. In fact I'm going to digg that to see how well it goes with diggers. - 404notfound, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1[[ Why not just stay out of submitted Photoshop stories if they've been "done to death."? I'd gladly just ignore stories like this if there were an option to block them in users' personal preferences. As it stands, the real digging I do is looking through story after story for one that might possibly be interesting amidst all the ones that I know I couldn't possibly care about.
The Luce plugin is a useful tool that would have made a good submission, but we don't need YAPT (Yet Another Photoshop Tutorial) when there are so many that are so readily accessible even without Digg here.
If I typed "photoshop tutorial" into Google, flipped to the fifth or so page, and then submitted one of the links to Digg, there's a fair chance that it would reach the front page, judging by how many of these I've seen already. Would people digg it? Yes. Should they? No. It's not hard to find and it's not something that many people wouldn't know they'd be interested in—really, just the lazy users (and the people who digg indiscriminately) would digg it.
Just because enough people digg a story for it to become front page doesn't mean it belongs there. Take any basics government course and you'll learn that even the framers of the Constitution did not believe that following the will of the people is the best course of action. Digg may not be tantamount to the US government, but there's something to be learned from the first leaders of one of the largest nations today.
It may not be possible to remediate the digging system without making major changes to the driving concept, but I hope I can at least indicate to others that one of the last things we need here is another Photoshop how-to when anybody who wants to find it can do so on Google in mere seconds. - ifonly, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0seems unique
- rectangleboy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0oh my god. dude, I've been looking for some tutorial like this for years. thank you so much!
