- yvesoft, on 01/26/2009, -0/+9Multitouch is so old! When I don't have to touch a thing to have the job done, then I'll digg it.
- zwanderer, on 01/26/2009, -1/+10you mention MS Surface since Microsoft could spend millions on the advertisement. Open Source is much more unique and greater ! :) it also caters to the community. by the people and for the people
- SteelChicken, on 01/26/2009, -2/+10then it will be easier to train tech support
- Verytastycheese, on 01/26/2009, -11/+19Looks like a complete rip off Microsoft surface...
- KibibyteBrain, on 01/26/2009, -0/+7There's much similar art to the Surface concept. The real point of the Surface is it has no-nonsense, powerful, and low latency WPF and XNA based SDKs, so that people can actually concentrate on developing apps for it, and not hacking stuff together. It also pretty much "just works", while some of the other similar units out there detect better/worse in some places or require very low level code to be written for even basic apps.

- allemande, on 01/26/2009, -1/+6who cares, i'd buy something like this from these guys way before i think of even buying it from microsoft.
- digitalpencil, on 01/26/2009, -2/+6^ i'm hardly blowing my own trumpet dude. there are kids who've built these things (as I said, there are loads of pretty simple tutorials on the subject). I just object to a group of engineering students touting this development as some sort of ground-breaking 8-week research project when anyone that can read and has a box/projector could've built the exact same thing, running the exact same software with very little difficulty.
- iharbinger, on 01/26/2009, -2/+6prodigy ftw
- zwanderer, on 01/26/2009, -0/+3sure dude ! we're keen on seeing your stuff !
- digitalpencil, on 01/26/2009, -0/+3^ Perhaps they've developed some custom apps for it, these are the things i'd like to see though as pong, ragdoll, piano, artGen etc. are all pre-written AS3 demos for touchLib. They say on their site the 'Sparsh' team are developing multitouch applications but all I can see is the same demos used on every FTIR implementation. You can get most of them off Google Code repository..

you don't have to @me when you're replying to my comment.
yes, there are tutorials on how to do lots of things like 'making graphics and visual effects' but people don't tend to follow an FTIR coffee-table tutorial, call it an '8 week research project' and rename it 'Sparsh'.
If there's something new and unique about this project's methodology then cool, i'd love to see more about that but as far as I can see, it's exactly the same as every other build.. what am I missing? - NeoNcP, on 01/26/2009, -0/+3I will not be impressed until I see a multitouch with zero lag
- havenax0n, on 01/26/2009, -0/+3I actually am working on it. I doubt anyone will notice when I post it to digg lol. It's coming soon.
- arbysrocks, on 01/26/2009, -2/+4i like how you had to tell everyone you already made one
- cloudberries, on 01/26/2009, -3/+5Ahh, touchscreens. Is there anything else that has been so eagerly over-hyped recently?
- davman99, on 01/26/2009, -0/+2http://www.nuigroup.com has loads of examples of this...
- filipesda, on 01/26/2009, -0/+2cool, i'm going to built one rigth now.
- memper, on 01/27/2009, -0/+2Gripping.
That video had the touch.
I really got a feel for it.
Can't wait to get my fingers on that tech!
What a drag!
You have to really hand it to them.
The press will pick it up.
I'll stop. - mrBitch, on 01/28/2009, -0/+2I would have dug you up, but that would have required me to touch my track-pad...
- djaybe, on 01/26/2009, -0/+2dugg for the virtual turntables - can't wait!
- Phelyx, on 01/26/2009, -0/+2The Minority Report interface is a great example of an interface that looks cool in a movie, but in the real world do I really want to have to stand up and wave my arms around to use PhotoShop for 10 hours a day? And seeing all the stuff behind that semi-transparent screen would be distracting and interfere with the image quality. For now, I think I want to keep my big, nicely calibrated monitors and my pen tablet.
- digitalpencil, on 01/26/2009, -0/+2^ http://www.ehow.com/how_4559676_build-multitouch-f ...
is one i just found with google but there's loads of variations. hell, i've seen one done with a piece of perspex, a webcam and a cardboard box but this type of installation will need a projector.
I think there's a top-down ver as well on instructables. just google around. - mrBitch, on 01/28/2009, -0/+1That's MR bitch to you...
- jhaks, on 01/26/2009, -1/+2Exactly. There are many different forms of multi-touch hardware but without a good development platform multi-touch will never take off.
- thinboyslim, on 01/26/2009, -1/+2Sparsh, farsch. Where's my Minority Report computer!!!
- zwanderer, on 01/26/2009, -0/+1check out nuigroup dot com for this :) in case you need our personal support we'll share all the knowhow that we've learnt ! :)
- noahhoward, on 01/26/2009, -0/+1links, I'd be interested in trying one out if the wife or work will let me.
- mrBitch, on 01/28/2009, -0/+1@ Verytastycheese RE: " Looks like a complete rip off Microsoft surface.. "
Microsoft "Surface" was presented to Bill Gates as a product " idea " in 2003.
BUT Microsoft were ripping off quite a lot of PREVIOUS WORK done on multi-touch that goes back a LONG way before 2003.
The timeline for "multi-touch" goes all the way back to 1982, in Toronto :
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Multi-touch
" Multi-touch technology dates back to 1982, when the University of Toronto developed the first finger pressure multi-touch display. The same year, Bell Labs at Murray Hill published what is believed to be the first paper[citation needed] discussing touch-screen based interfaces.
In 1984 Bell Labs engineered a touch screen that could change images with more than one hand. The group at the University of Toronto stopped working on hardware and moved on to software and interfaces, expecting that they would have access to the Bell Labs work.
A breakthrough occurred in 1991, when Pierre Wellner published a paper on his multi-touch “Digital Desk”, which supported multi-finger and pinching motions. [4][5]
Fingerworks
In 1999, Fingerworks, a Newark-based company run by University of Delaware academics John Elias and Wayne Westerman, produced a line of multi-touch products including the iGesture Pad and the TouchStream keyboard.[6] Westerman published a dissertation in 1999 on the subject. In 2005, after years of maintaining a niche line of keyboards and touchpads, Fingerworks was acquired by Apple " - mrBitch, on 01/28/2009, -0/+1@ digitalpencil RE: " .. as pong, ragdoll, piano, artGen etc. are all pre-written AS3 demos for touchLib. That's funny, it looks like Microsoft's "Surface" SDK is pretty well a "work in progress" and FAR from anywhere NEAR finished...
the Microsoft Surface FAQ says this about any requests for a Microsft Surface SDK :
http://digg.com/software/Microsoft_REFUSES_to_give ...
".. as a limited distribution, the SDK was only available to developers that either attended the "Developing for Microsoft Surface" session or stopped by one of the Microsoft Surface hands-on labs at the event.
Q./ What if I want an SDK but didn't attend PDC?
A./ ... email us for more info RE future distribution.. " - HonoredMule, on 01/26/2009, -2/+2@digitalpencil: You're missing the work they did actually developing software to run on their box. Correct me if I'm mistaken and it's actually from elsewhere, but that pong game with arbitrary multitouch-placed paddles, the multitouch-controlled ragdoll simulation, and the piano keyboard display all looked original to me. Even the other stuff looked like they might have been their own implementations of previous work.
- havenax0n, on 01/26/2009, -1/+1already done. Will post soon.
- zwanderer, on 01/26/2009, -3/+2@digitalpencil
Its not posed as groundbreaking at the first place. There are tutorials on making graphics and visual effects on the internet , but we still tend to like the new upcoming stuff. Every project and methodology is unique ! - mapls, on 03/06/2009, -1/+0Looks cool
http://www.weightwatchers-recipes.info - digitalpencil, on 01/26/2009, -5/+4This is so far from being new.. i made one last year using one of the many instructables on the subject.. Loads of people have done this already.
