- ateoto, on 10/12/2007, -2/+51I'm not an American Muscle guy, but I love the styling on these Shelby Mustangs and DAMN thats some crazy power.
- hiltinuts2, on 10/12/2007, -5/+38SUPER SNAKE!?!?
Could they think of something a little more phallic? Whats next... the Chevy Camero Ball Enhancer? - HesNikke, on 10/12/2007, -8/+38@whiskeymb: acording to the most recent episode of TopGear (google video it) the shelby still has an old style solid rear axle. this car has far too much power for it's axle, and it's all over the track because of it. "It goes really fast. In a strait line."
- trollick, on 10/12/2007, -7/+33So is it a snake or a horse??? Make up your ***** mind!
- mrfreeziexp, on 10/12/2007, -2/+23Probably not..
And that's to both of you. - Tenlow, on 10/12/2007, -3/+20whiskeymb: IRS is just one more thing to replace.
If you look at the 03-05 cobras, the rear end just wouldnt hold up to the power. Alot of owners swapped TO the solid rear axle to fix the problem. - Opheleum, on 10/12/2007, -7/+24The stock 2005+ Mustang and Mustang GT do have a solid rear axle. However, it was apparently engineered so well that many testers for Car & Driver and Road & Track literally got under the car to ensure that it wasn't an Independent Rear Suspension.
Also, some of the special edition cars, notably the Shelby GT500 have put in an IRS - khafra, on 10/12/2007, -2/+18@HesNikke: This is nothing new. American performance cars, except some Corvettes, the Ford GT, the Viper, and the Saleen S7, are designed to go fast in a straight line. Shelby mustangs especially--while they'll usually add more horsepower than Roush mustangs, they'll neglect handling upgrades that allow the Roush to get around a track much more quickly.

725Hp! WoW!
Now that's what I'm talking about ... more horse power in bumper to bumper traffic on 405 in LA ... you can really rev that engine loud! - Tenlow, on 10/12/2007, -2/+16Define "useful"
just because you cant possibly think of a use for it, doesn't mean it's useless. - tuxidomasx, on 10/12/2007, -3/+17i like the fact that american cars are starting to not copy imports as much. i think its good that they are going with their own style.
- CletusJones, on 10/12/2007, -7/+202003 Toyota Corolla...LE! Who wants to race?
- palmerjp, on 10/12/2007, -3/+15but will it handle well?
- Tenlow, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11Well it's already called the Cobra, so the "super snake" doesnt seem like that big of a stretch.
- Urusai, on 10/12/2007, -2/+12What's that noise? Sounds like a guy with a chainsaw walking slowly past.
- banderbe, on 10/12/2007, -9/+19Actually, given the declining birth rates of Europe their tiny eco-friendly cars are probably more reflective of their diminutive genitalia.
- vcleniuk, on 10/12/2007, -2/+12One last super muscle car. I love Shelby's and Mustangs...
Wish I could buy one. - schnikies79, on 10/12/2007, -4/+14I get so ***** sick of hearing this. Anytime anyone mentions a vehicle that is anything even remotely more than a daily driver, some jackass has to say they have a small penis.
Why not everything in the world be average then? A fast computer? You must be compensating. A huge tv? Compensating again? PocketPC instead of a regular cell? Compensating.
Get off your high horse and realize that some people just like to have fun. - nighttrain2007, on 10/12/2007, -2/+11In the eye of the beholder. I can think of multiple uses for this. Wiping Vettes and Vipers off the road are just two uses that come to mind. Drowning out rap music at the stoplight with the right exhaust package. Running sub 10s off the production line. Cutting my commute time in half. See? That's five or six and I haven't even really looked at the car yet.
Just because you can't see a use or need for it, doesn't mean there's not going to be a demand for the product - alpha94, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10@tenlow: Most 03-04 owners did not swap their IRS to go so a solid live axle. I have a cobra and my IRS is just fine thanks. If you upgrade your power like crazy then yes, you upgrade your half shafts. But I know of many cobra's, even twin turbo 600-800whp ones that still have an IRS.
- kamisama, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8Damn you Americans, now we Europeans can't use the line "Americans get pathetic hp figures from v8's" any longer. :)
It could have looked better, but it isn't too bad either. After seeing the previous Shelby against the rouch (hope this is the right spelling), which had, if i recall correctly, a better rear end and less power, but also hugged the bends, whereas the Shelby needed a lot of work to keep up with his superior hp. I hope they go for a similar setup as that rouch to harness all those stallions, it'll need all the help it can get to keep on the road.
Also, it's good to see, keeping in mind the car makers are facing hard times, that Ford isn't afraid to show some lunacy. - JamesonHuckaba, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8American cars can only go fast in a straight line?
I'm a fan of foreign cars as well. However, if I remember right, the current rendition of the Z06 Corvette was able to lap the Nuremburg ring quicker than many supercars out there. Some track times:
7:28-7:40 - Porsche Carrera GT with multiple attempts, different drivers and track conditions
7:40 - C6 Corvette Z06
7:40 - Mercedes SLR
7:43 - 996 Porsche 911 GT3 RS
7:43.5 - Lamborghini Murcielago
7:44 - Pagani Zonda C12S
7:46 - 996 Porsche 911 GT2
7:50 - BMW M3 CSL
7:52 - Lamborghini Gallardo
7:56 - C5 Corvette Z06
7:56 - Ferrari 360 Challenge Stradale
7:56 - 996 Porsche 911 Turbo

The Ford GT is up there too - it's a very capable car. Even Jeremy Clarkson bought one. - Khabi, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10I first read this as the "Solid Snake", and was trying to figure out why Hideo Kojima was tuning cars now...
- bigfkncee, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10@ pimpalicious316
and whats wrong with that? - gtluke, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9i have a buddy who works for a ford testing plant, and has driven the shelby and gt's with IRS, he said there was so little difference in ride quality and handling that they could not justify the added weight and price. they also had 3 totally different setups for the IRS during development, and still decided to stick with the live axle.
the mustang is also an entry level car sports car, and drag racing is the entry level racing. IRS is absolutely horrible for drag racing and when the cobra had IRS, they were always swapped out for the live axle by anyone interested in drag racing.
i have a 600 hp mustang of my own, (2800lbs) its the most awesome experience winding the gears out. go for a ride in a car with 500+ hp one day if you haven't, its really an awesome experience. - shelbygt33, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9Well, do you need to comb your hair every day? Do you have to buy Ralph Lauren when Wal-Mart brand looks nearly the same? Do you have to use Crest instead of generic brand toothpaste? Do you need the CD player in the car?
It isn't about "needs", it's about wants. And as long as people want bigger and better and faster, then they will make that. - Khabi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Its not about "needs", some people just enjoy a car that can kick you in the ass, some people like the thrill from going fast (both on and off the racetrack). A fairly large chunk of the population enjoy cars and car tuning, that is what this is aimed at. Not necessarly as a daily driver, but it could *probably* pass as one of those too.
- whiskeymb, on 10/12/2007, -24/+31I can, I'll wait till someone makes this same car with a better rear end. correct me if I'm wrong, but doesn't it still use the solid rear axle?
- KayIslandDrunk, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7There is nothing wrong with them introducing this car. Generally the people who will be able to afford this car won't be worrying about gas prices anyway.
- ostracize, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Snake + Wild Horse = *Super* tough
- TheTaoOfBill, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7Dang! 725HP! It would take a pretty powerful attack to make this car faint!
- MCGrunge1, on 10/12/2007, -3/+9/cower
- BobMysterioso, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6A friend of mine has a totally absurdly upgraded 350Z - that pulled 620 HP off a dyno.
Anyway, I have never been in anything like that. He floored it on an interestate onramp and I was scared. Like, a little wow, and a lot oh ***** I'm going to die.
If you added another 100.. that would induce pants crapping. - cawpin, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6@hiltinuts2 - Super Snake was the name of the two Shelby Cobras that were made with dual super-charged 429s. They're just using the name again.
@4degrees - The car wasn't named after a horse; it was named after the plane. It was a marketing "mistake" that put the horse logo on it. - cyrix, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5More like a guy with a coffee can of pissed off bees walking past.
- Wolfie351, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Well, since you're obviously uninterested in performance cars, why did you feel the "need" to click on the link?
- Pimpalicious316, on 10/12/2007, -10/+15yeah, unfortunately they are now copying themselves...from the 60's
- iamcanman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5I will challenge you with my 2006 Corolla S. Tons of extra plastic, no added horsepower.
A duel between two 120bhp monsters! Fear us! - Urusai, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7Do not speak of the '74 Mustang. Do not speak of the '74 GTO either. Shame. Shame on you.
- willcoll, on 10/12/2007, -3/+7tearing up the asphalt sure is fun with 500+ hp. Alot of AWD or FWD cars can't say that. I'll take my cheapo box thank you
- osbjmg, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4whiskeymb - Shelby doesn't believe in independent suspension because he is all about more power and less wheel-hop. Personally, I would rather have a car with lots of power and lots of handling. When you have a big ol' engine and lots and lots of power, that's when things get squirrelly.
- schmitey, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4souped up 350's scare me as is...620?, damn that car would get airborn!
what the hell'd he do to it? - gtluke, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3for me, my 600+ hp mustang is very useful. if i'm ever feeling down i just have to rip it down the highway for 20 minutes and my whole world is a better place. trying to maintain it also occupies a lot of my free time, which keeps me off the internet and TV which i find useful.
- frodsteamin2, on 10/12/2007, -3/+7good old Eleanor 2007. yess...price tag is going to be up there....i cant even guess what itll be.
- Pbear74, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Meet Elenor's bigger, meaner sister.
- Nerfdude, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6guys, watching Top Gear doesn't make you a gearhead. a solid rear axle is a great choice for this kind of car. it's designed to blow the doors off of anything it comes up against, stoplight to stoplight, down the quarter mile, or on a nice, straight highway.
here in America, car manufacturers have always focused their street legal offerings on going fast in a straight line, because that's what we have plenty of. there just aren't that many "twisties", and moreover, the only roads that are really "safe" to open up a 700+hp car are going to be straight, flat, fresh highways, not unkempt backroads. - ray901, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3You need to use some resources and work on your definitions. That way when you pretend to know what you are talking about you might actually be correct.
- PointAndClick, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Super Snake is a throwback to the one Super Snake built in 1967. It included a 520hp 427. 50 were originally planned, but they were deemed too expensive to produce.
http://bradbarnett.net/mustangs/timeline/67-68/67/
King Cobra was used on the Mustang II's in the 70's
http://bradbarnett.net/mustangs/timeline/74-78/78/index.htm - fix8ed, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4I'm no Ford guy but damn, 700+ hp strapped to anything just flat out = fast.
- panthrtail, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3only 750 hit points? my level 76 cleric could kill that easy.
