- tenio, on 07/11/2009, -5/+61Tasers have an important job in the police field, they should be used as the "next to last resort". (right before guns)
However, the problem is that some police treat them as a FIRST resort and not like the dangerous, pain-inducing, humiliating tool that they are. - Elderon, on 07/11/2009, -4/+39I think tasers can be useful but the problem is that cops are using in situations that don't warrant using it. Tasers are not supposed to be used on someone just because they won't follow your orders or are being disrepectful, they should be used when a suspect is trying to be violent.
I'd much rather be tased then shot. at least being tased only has a small chance to kill you a bullet hole pretty much will without medical treatment. - theNazz, on 07/10/2009, -12/+47The only difference between using a cattle prod to shock people into following orders and using a Taser is that a Taser has much better reach. I'm 'shocked' that people find it an acceptable form of behavior correction.
Mooooove along people. Nothing to see here. - DiggyWiggy, on 07/10/2009, -8/+37Well if they're so safe they can just test them on themselves... go ahead and take it to the back of the head like that defenseless 14-year-old girl running away.
- GrammerPants, on 07/11/2009, -1/+22I'd much rather be tased then shot, maced or clubbed. All options for cops to use. It is all in the training, cops, at least here in Vancouver, are not properly trained to use them, and more importantly what situations to use them in, or not use them in. Zapping a kid threatening you with a knife once, fine. Zapping a polish guy in the airport 4 times while he is threatening you with a stapler not fine.
- Jeepinator, on 07/11/2009, -2/+20Aye. They should be treated the same as firearms. If you wouldn't shoot them, then you shouldn't taser them either.
- Zaxcomp, on 07/11/2009, -2/+19False dichotomy. I'd rather the police didn't use violence against children at all.
- stevgex, on 07/10/2009, -4/+21I need this to keep them damn kids off my lawn...
- Azriel7, on 07/11/2009, -3/+1920-second Taser shock cycle? Doesn't that seem like a LONG time to be shocked?
- emkaysmith, on 07/11/2009, -5/+18In the old days, it was assumed that any cop in uniform should be fit enough to chase down a fleeing suspect and grab him. Now, being apparently too fat to run, they stand back and shoot first. The fact that they now have the option to electrocute you rather than putting a slug in you only means they're *more* willing to shoot without thinking. It certainly doesn't make me feel any safer.
- KirbyMeister, on 07/11/2009, -0/+13The problem isn't tasers, the problem is cops. Anyone given an arbitrary position of authority -will- abuse it (see Milgram's prison experiment), taking away one method of abuse will not help the problem.
- khfn, on 07/11/2009, -2/+15I agree, but I'm pretty sure it's law enforcement policy to teach trainees that they should use a taser whenever they see the slightest disobedience, because cops don't get reprimanded for their mis-use and sometimes they're even promoted for abusing citizens. Think about the significance of this. What does this mean?
- lolwutpear, on 07/11/2009, -1/+13There's something very unsettling about the term "less lethal"
- emkaysmith, on 07/11/2009, -2/+13"I'm 'shocked' that people find it an acceptable form of behavior correction."
Only people who have never been tasered. The same sort of people who assume anyone a cop shoots *must* have deserved it. - gettophilosophr, on 07/11/2009, -4/+14Right, I'd rather get hit with a baton.
Here's how I see it: cops are supposed to keep order and safety. People dick around. Cops need ways to stop people dicking around. Usually that means arresting people who are breaking the law. Sometimes people won't accept that and get violent. If someone's attacking me, I will stop him. Now if I were a cop, I'd prefer to have an option between "stern reprimand" and "9mm hole in the head". An electronic weapon that'll instantly incapacitate anyone without permanent damage (at least the vast majority of the time) sounds good. I mean hell, things go wrong. If you tackle someone, they could trip and fall down stairs. If you hit someone with a baton, you can break bones. If you bean-bag someone from a shotgun, you may miss and hit them in the head. I don't want my police carrying inflatable carnival hammers, do you?
Now making sure the cops are using their tools appropriately is another question all together. - spriggig, on 07/11/2009, -1/+11Contact your local police department and ask for a copy of their Use of Force Continuum, it's public information. On it you should see a description of in what circumstances a Taser is authorized for use. You might be surprised--here is the one my local department uses:
http://www.iwillspeakout.org/wp-content/uploads/20 ... - Jeepinator, on 07/11/2009, -6/+14"They were developed for the sole purpose of increasing human suffering"
You couldn't be more wrong. They were developed to give people a way to defend themselves without the high risk of killing someone that comes with a firearm. The risk is still there, as we have seen several times, but it is much lower. If used correctly a taser is almost the perfect solution to diffuse a risky situation for police. They just need to be trained better on when to use it. - inactive, on 07/11/2009, -14/+22They DO you stupid *****. Every signle cop that is issued a Taser must get tased first.
- Zaxcomp, on 07/11/2009, -5/+12Cool, just another tool I have to worry about being misused and being my death. Heart problems in the age of tasers are quite scary.
- emkaysmith, on 07/11/2009, -1/+8"Save lives"? We're not talking about the cops trying to subdue a gang of crazed bank robbers carrying Uzis, you know. We're talking about your average guy who gets stopped for being out after dark, questions the cop's right to harass him, and gets tasered for talking back -- and is then charged with "resisting arrest" while he's having a seizure.
What's wrong with cops treating ordinary people like PEOPLE instead of regarding them as The Enemy? The only people I know who actually like cops -- and I know a LOT of people -- are themselves authoritarian, repressive, given to right-wing political opinions, and believe all the rest of us are Evil at heart and must be controlled. Everyone else I know, regardless of their background, considers cops to be no different from armed five-year-olds and not to be trusted. - eadnams, on 07/11/2009, -1/+8Exactly, the Taser is not the issue, it's the people using them. Don't blame the tool for the users actions.
- jba68, on 07/11/2009, -1/+7safety is for pussies
- thefreehunter, on 07/11/2009, -2/+8He's being voted down, but he's right. Cops must be Tased if they want to carry a taser, and pepper sprayed if they wish to carry that.
- bakedpajamas, on 07/11/2009, -1/+7Thank God...I was really tired of being tasered up close.
- ChileanGoD, on 07/11/2009, -0/+6Maaan... they are really into their top high tech terminator secret agent weaponry marketing *****.
- GrammerPants, on 07/11/2009, -0/+6I would taser him ONCE. He was tasered four time, FOUR. That was the problem.
- TekTrixter, on 07/11/2009, -1/+6iirc it gives short jolts over a 20 second span
- kemp34, on 07/10/2009, -5/+10Human cattle.
- ZenMojo, on 07/11/2009, -0/+5That's...kind of scary. So defensive resistance not likely to harm the police officer gets you shocked by a "less lethal" weapon? And mace is considered in the same category as a taser?
- tehdiggster, on 07/11/2009, -2/+7I can't wait for the Taser sniper rifle!
- Paranor01, on 07/11/2009, -0/+5dugg you both for funny, but sometimes true, stereotypes.
- Stevanoski, on 07/11/2009, -1/+6Anyone who eats at burger king should be required to be tazed.
- SpykerSpeed, on 07/11/2009, -2/+7Exactly, the "milk" you provide to the state is your tax dollars.
Government is human farming.
And gettophilosophr, look at what you've written. "People dick around." That's true. And cops are people. So by the transitive property, "Cops dick around". And there must be a check on their power. - spriggig, on 07/11/2009, -0/+5All police departments have a policy called the Use of Force Continuum. Here is the one for my local police department, it shows in what circumstances tasers are allowed to be used:
http://www.iwillspeakout.org/wp-content/uploads/20 ... - HandsOfNod, on 07/11/2009, -3/+7Ghastly indeed. Just click on "view features" and scroll through them all.
http://www.taserx3.com/ - Suricou, on 07/11/2009, -0/+4I assumed it was so the manufacturer is less likely to be held liable when someone does die.
- mikelieman, on 07/11/2009, -0/+4Since there is a proven, significant amount of abuse using these weapons, we need to keep them out of the hands of potential abusers.
Since the Police seem unable to enforce Discipline within their ranks, NONE of them should be permitted these torture devices. - blowed247, on 07/11/2009, -1/+5"oh no! old man jenkins is after us!!"
- omgTHEPATRIOTS, on 07/11/2009, -1/+5buried for being Stevanoski
- Zaxcomp, on 07/11/2009, -2/+6I'll do as the police ask so long as it remains reasonable, but if it disagrees with my sense of logic or does not follow due process, I will do no such thing.
Also, a normal citizen can buy a taser at the very electronics store I work at. That is some major *****. - nigradamus, on 07/11/2009, -2/+5Tasers should be banned until cops can learn once again to police without relying on them. They are lazy.
- phoomp, on 07/11/2009, -1/+4Not at all. The problem with the Taser is how casually police use them, in the faulty impression that they're *non*-lethal. You'll notice that lately they're re-termed "less"-lethal after several people have died after being tasered.
- Suricou, on 07/11/2009, -0/+3Product placement!
- omgTHEPATRIOTS, on 07/11/2009, -0/+3But giving them another method to abuse - with obviously fabricated safety reports - certainly doesn't help either!
- Guitarhammer, on 07/11/2009, -1/+4This is stupid! With things like guncoat and duracoat many people have colored guns. I have seen A real AR-15(Hello Kitty AR anyone) in yellow myself. If this was pulled on me I would try to shoot to defend my life, I am not waiting to see if it is real or a taser gun.
- BottledViolence, on 07/11/2009, -0/+3Never let the muzzle cover anything you are not willing to destroy.
- Black6x, on 07/11/2009, -0/+3It's better than pepper spray for both sides, too (having been hit by both). As the person being subdued, if a taser is used, once they stop pressing the trigger, the pain stops. Pepper spray pain continues even after a person gives up. It also may give flare-ups for a day or two. Oh, and there is washing off, where it runs down your body to more sensitive areas. For the officer, pepper spray can turn on you due to the wing. Also, if the guy touchs you after he's sprayed, it's on you, too.
- mikelieman, on 07/11/2009, -0/+3"Please provide proof that "most" of our cops are "gigantic pieces of *****." "
Every single BAD COP on the force is a testament to the complicity of the SO-CALLED-GOOD-COPS.
If there WERE any real Good Cops, then the Bad Cops would have already been retired.
The ones who THINK They're Good Cops? They're Bad Cops, too, since they don't DO ANYTHING about the REAL BAD COPS.
You want respect? Clean up your ranks.
EARN the respect. - ZenMojo, on 07/11/2009, -1/+4Except for the fact that some old goat actually shot a kid who walked across his lawn...
- Fib0112, on 07/12/2009, -0/+3Pete, shut the ***** up. They get tased once and that's it. Later, when they are on the job, they can tase a person repeatedly, a lot of times to the point of dying. Explain how that fits in your world view.
