- awfulshot, on 10/12/2007, -5/+60god help us when soccer moms start driving these around
- fraynelson, on 10/12/2007, -5/+49It doesn't seem fair to me that they show what a mine does to an unprotected truck, but not what it would do to THEIR vehicle...
- 386master, on 10/12/2007, -5/+30I think wired.com ran an article on this sometime last year. If it's the same company as in that article, this vehicle was a bit controversial, due to the fact that it resembles a vehicle used by the South African (SA) Apartheid regime to break up pro-democracy demonstrations and that some of the scientists working on the Cougar had been involved in the SA version as well.
Let's hope this machine will only be used to assure soldiers safety from IEDs and not as an instrument of oppression like its predecessor. - oboreruhito, on 10/12/2007, -2/+20Weren't Hummers just supposed to replace the jeep as a general purpose transport? When did anyone think it was suited to drive on roads that are virtual minefields with rocket-armed insurgents?
- frem001, on 10/12/2007, -7/+25Is there a hybrid version? :P
- loveandrockets, on 10/12/2007, -1/+16I read an article about an IED squad in Iraq who had just disarmed an IED from the cab of their mine-disposal vehicle with a robot arm. This vehicle is a fortress, designed to withstand the impact of high-powered explosives.
The thing is, the soldiers hoisted the robot arm with the IED on the end right in front of the windshield to take a picture of it and what do you think happened? Explosion. Would have been funny if they weren't injured. - bathroomninja, on 10/12/2007, -1/+14We got to roll with a few of these when I was in Iraq a year ago. I saw one of the ones they call 'buffalo' (we called 'casper') hit a mine. It did no harm to the guys inside, and took the crew about an hour to replace the axle and wheel. I always prayed that we would get these things on a large scale. Everything about them is great. Hummers really suck for combat.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+11Weak web host.
http://www.forceprotection.net.nyud.net:8080/models/cougar/ - drbroccoli, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8Really? If it were my way, cars with under 20 miles per gallon would not be allowed without a special permit. In order to get an obese vehicle, they would need a permit and proof that it is needed for work, were they live, family etc.
- nrbelex, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8This thing has been around for a while - It's being used in testing by the Marines and Army for a while - "The Buffalo was first deployed with the Army Corps of Engineers in 2003. This is the first time, however, that the Army's Tank-automotive and Armaments Command in Warren, Michigan has placed an order." - http://biz.yahoo.com/bw/060208/20060208005494.html?.v=1
- macattacks10, on 10/12/2007, -5/+12By the sheer size of that thing, it probably barely gets 3 mpg...
- KriLL3.2™, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9"Cutting-edge technology combined with the best American automotive components"
So it's a tin can that got a huge engine with no power and no cornering ability what so ever? - jeffness, on 10/12/2007, -5/+12that's great. only took 3 years. if we had been this unresponsive to changing battlefield conditions during WW2, we would've lost. embarassing.
- lancefisher, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8I don't think that this will replace the Hummer. It will be used for different scenarios. You can probably carry three or four hummers for each one of these in a cargo plane.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+9Something tells me that this link was submitted by this company's PR department.
- Deuterium, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7No matter how tough you build it you can easily make an effective IED against this vehicle with only a pound or two of HE shaped by hand. Hell you can take most wine bottles, cut off the base, fill the base with some HE, use at least 6 times the height of the explovises as a standoff distance and make a very effective shaped charge that will slice through ANY APC. Scale that up by a factor of 5 and you can defeat ANY modern tank. Sad but true.
- 16bit, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6I completely agree. The hummer is not a combat vehicle, and never should have been. I find it laughable that they classify it as 'Recon' and then just roll them off the line as if it were the solution to the war's problems. Ours were underpowered and under armored. To top it off, they overload them with hundreds of lbs of equipment.
If you're going to task a Humvee to do armored transport, you might as well buy the new vehicles. - adam, on 10/12/2007, -4/+9That's a good thing.. I looked at the buried comments, they sucked.
- muikano, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Hah. It's not hard. Almost every digg comment sucks. It's like throwing a dart at a elephant.
- Spazkake, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6if i had my way cars that got under 30 miles per gallon would be illegal
- llamagod, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4http://64.233.179.104/search?q=cache:w5EH_XYx1zEJ:www.forceprotection.net/+&hl=en&gl=us&ct=clnk&cd=1
heres the google cache as it now seems to have been hit by the digg effect, at least it was for me - NaziHatinChimp, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I live in South Carolina (where Force Protection is) and they are catching heat here because they haven't come close to meeting the Government's quota.
- teh_toaster, on 10/12/2007, -13/+17Like the Humvee, Gov. Schwarzenegger will popularize the civilian version, then it will used by the rich and the elite, then will be marketed to the soccer moms (the cigarette lighter will be replaced by a lipstick holder)
- Jeral, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3The wheels don't use CIS. They have solid steel under the rubber.
- cathode, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5Many parents who'se kids have died on trikes may disagree.
- fonebone, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3These things were designed by the South African government decades ago (ask me, I've seen them all through my life). They are pretty much resistant to any mine blast. They were used extensively in the SA-Angola war during the eighties as troop carriers, and during the township riots in the apartheid years. They were called "Caspirs" and later "Buffalo's", as I see they are still referred to by the US soldiers in Iraq.
- CornFlake, on 10/12/2007, -5/+8does it really matter as long as it save lives
- fiv3isaliv3, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Saw this in popular mechanics a couple of months ago. Looks to be a huge improvement on what the military currently uses.
- Kashey, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Safest Vehicle On The Planet Crushes Hummer???
Man I expected some video where this vehicle runs over the hammer and crushes it! - landincoldfire, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Wow, it sure looks like it could handle alot of abuse.
- cathode, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5It's purpose is not to corner quickly. Do you think you're looking at a mini?
- Livert, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6Looks like something Chuck Norris would drive.
- Panoctopi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Something about addiction to oil... I agree, it's about time we raise KAFE standards.
- CaptainChad, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Let's get this straight: there is a difference between a Humvee and a Hummer. A Humvee is a combat vehicle used exclusively by the military. A Hummer is a civilian vehicle that has visual similarities to a Humvee but which is not combat-ready in any sense of the word. These two vehicles are not the same, and their names should not be used interchangeably (as they are in tfa, the digg article title and many of the comments).

Fraud charges in England "disappeared". For one Gordon McGilton.
Gotta break a few eggs to make an omelette. - ubuntuist, on 10/12/2007, -5/+7Yep, the government loves to set an example. :p
- mlahana, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4I personally don't care if the truck got 1 mpg, if it protects our troops it's a sound investment. These, unlike hummers, are not personal vehicles (although at 150,000 a real hummer isn't too commercial). We want troops to be safe, and if the cost is oil then no worries. Pollution is secondary to safety IMO.
- DKasler, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3This is OLD news.
It has been posted on Digg MANY TIMES.
Heres one from over 100 days ago. http://digg.com/technology/Tough_enough_to_take_on_land_mines - mglmouser, on 10/12/2007, -6/+8How can a vehicle meant for war be labeled as safest vehicle on the planet?
I'd have said that about a tricycle.
I think you're less likely to be shot RPGs on a bike than you are in an army transportation vehicle. - ianeb2005, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4Dude your a *****' idiot! If it wasn't for vehicles like that, our troops wouldn't be in Iraq in the first place!
- jeffness, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4the turbine power plant of an M1 Abrams tank uses approximately 3 gallons per mile... keep in mind that it is a gas turbine engine, and therefore exact MPG is impossible to really measure, because the engine is always running, and the MPG depends on the speed the tank is traveling.
- blackjack75, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2If you drive in a country where people put bombs on the road hoping you run on them, then building bigger, thougher cars is not exactly the right solution to the problem. The only thing this is going to chance: they'll have to build stronger bombs.
- Sargasso_C, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3I would like to see them try and drive that thing down some of the narrow streets in Basra. No wonder the field ops commanders are buying LandRovers. Geez!, don't you guys do anything, small.
- teh_toaster, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3The video section does have a clip showing the mine protection of the larger Buffalo.
http://www.forceprotection.net/news/video.html?video=cnbc
http://www.forceprotection.net/video/cnbc.swf
The good stuff doesn't happen until the end of the clip. - wiener, on 10/12/2007, -1/+32006 Hummer H1 Alpha: estimated 570 miles between fill-ups
Vs
COUGAR H Series 6X6: Up to 600 miles on-highway - Deuterium, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Yeah but try to drive this thing downtown Hilla or Kut. Try to do on any urban street in Baghdad and you'll be SOL. I was glad I rode in an UAH or a civy vehicle. At least I could maneuver. You are a sitting duck in this vehicle in most places in the city.
- fiv3isaliv3, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2another article if anyone wants to read up on it more...
http://www.usatoday.com/news/nation/2005-08-23-humvees-main_x.htm?csp=34 - skytimelapse, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Read in the NYT the company making these lied about the numbers the could produce and are way behind schedule.
- XxUNDEROATHxX, on 10/12/2007, -9/+11yes, but is it more fuel economic?
- battlefield1985, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3I was kind of hoping to see it actually crush a hummer =/ Nonetheless its about time the soldiers had something that will help defend against those road mines.
