Recommendations to Significantly Improve Digg User Exp...
surferess.blogspot.com — As a fairly heavy Digg user, I have had the opportunity to learn and understand a great deal about how Digg works. I have been known to spend a fair amount of time on digg. That statement will, no doubt, bring a loud chorus of “get a life” comments from some of the more light-weight Diggers. I only point out the hours spent on digg because...

- alapoet, on 07/23/2008, -0/+13Excellent suggestions, all!
I agree with every single one of them.
Particularly urgent, IMO, are #2, "Who shouted to?" (that would be SO helpful; I've wished for it a thousand times!); #3, "Tab on prestory page with reasons for bury" (the Bury Brigades are out of control, and even though this wouldn't stop them -- I'm not sure anything would, short of changing the Bury function and/or the algorithm, it would still be useful); and #8, "Who dugg this" all on one page (the interface is a major PAIN as it now stands, when you have to go through several pages to get what should be simple information).
Bravo, Surferess! Listen up, Digg! - lucy22, on 07/24/2008, -0/+6Yes, it has been interesting to find diggers like me who share the same interests.
- MommaLu, on 07/24/2008, -0/+5Great suggestions, just wish I had more time to Digg.
- mieprowan, on 07/24/2008, -0/+4If you don't let people make friend requests until they have dugg X# of articles, they are likely to just go through and digg a bunch of stuff semi-haphazardly until they reach X. There are good suggestions on this piece but this one is a bit controlling. Perhaps a function that one could independently set for one's own profile, where you automatically refused friend requests for people who did not meet specific criteria. This idea could be broadened.
- Nathrat, on 07/24/2008, -0/+5Not bad, At first I was afraid this article was about the sh*tty recommendation engine. What a piece of sh*t.
- ltdraper, on 07/24/2008, -0/+2I'm not sure I understand why we would need to "reject" a friend. If someone friends you, they're just a fan. If you only accept shouts from friends, there's nothing they can do to you. They've just chosen to follow you. Nothing happens until you friend them back.
I doubt Digg will provide an explanation of why a story didn't make it popular -- they're pretty secretive about the specifics of the algorithm and this would just invite more reverse engineering.
You can accomplish most of what you've asked for by using the free version of the PMS Social Suite. You can look at all of your fans in a scrolling grid and see all of their stats, then mass select the ones you want to friend back. Finding other diggers that share the same interest is much easier as well. Check my profile for the link. - kathcom, on 07/24/2008, -0/+3These are the best suggestions I've seen yet about improving Digg, by a country mile.
As a new Digger, I would have objected to having a friend request blocked by my low overall number of Diggs. But after two months, I am constantly bombarded with friend requests from people who have no idea what I like and don't care. It is a pain to look at their profiles to see if they really share interests with me or are just trying to pad their friend lists.
A few of them are people who've excoriated me elsewhere on Digg (and not in a helpful way, I might add.) I would like to be able to refuse and get them off my fan list as you suggested.
Digg, are you listening? - MacBookForMe, on 07/24/2008, -0/+3I loved your great suggestions!
- CoffeeJoost, on 07/24/2008, -0/+3Great suggestions. I particularly like the one on shouts vs. IM Thanks Surferess.
- ironeus, on 08/01/2008, -0/+3many suggestions on the list would definitely enhance Digg's interface & improve usability of the site.
- livelife365, on 07/24/2008, -0/+4excellent suggestions. Digg is a great tool that has flaws; this post brings light to them and hopefully can address them...
- philostrato, on 07/25/2008, -0/+2great suggestions from a great digger....
