- justaddwater, on 01/03/2009, -1/+19great vid & article! thanks for posting :)
- michaelpinto, on 01/03/2009, -1/+17Thank you two! Bakshi is quite amazing when you think that he reinvented and redefined animation...
- allocate, on 01/03/2009, -0/+13I know some people who always zig when everyone else is zagging. It's not always a good thing.

- voomfoo, on 01/03/2009, -0/+10Wizards is one of my favorite movies. I think its awesome they ran out of money because the resulting ending was better than any crappy background painting ever could have been.
- dougs55, on 01/03/2009, -1/+8"nobody does it in a year except Bill Plimpton"
Makoto Shinkai did She and Her Cat and Voice of a Distant Star independently before going to work for a studio.
I got a good laugh out of the story about John Belushi eating a thousand dollars of pizza a week in his studio though. - michaelpinto, on 01/03/2009, -1/+7allocate: It's a matter of timing an application. You wouldn't want a postman to zig when everyone else is zagging, but if you're starting a company or are an investor it may make a great deal of sense. As usual he devil is in the details — if you want a current business example:
While the big three American automakers were zagging making huge oversized vehicles, Toyota zagged and make the Prius. Gas went up and the recession hit and now Toyota is doing better than everyone else. - algaeturd, on 01/03/2009, -0/+6Interesting post...much better than the usual 'tips to survive the recession.' Bakshi definitely has some great ideas.

Artists of all sorts could learn a lot from this guy. The music industry, in particular, comes to mind. - michaelpinto, on 01/03/2009, -1/+6dougs55 great point on Makoto Shinkai — although if Bakshi knew that much about anime I'd be in shock!
- NiftyG, on 01/03/2009, -1/+5Just as television killed theatrical cartoons, the internet will eventually kill televised cartoons.
- michaelpinto, on 01/03/2009, -0/+4Cool World had a GREAT soundtrack — as for the rest ummmmm...
- michaelpinto, on 01/03/2009, -0/+3Incorrect — and it's an "assistant"
- inactive, on 01/03/2009, -1/+4Ralph Bakshi never drew or animated a single cell of animation. Isn't that funny? His assistance did.
- fabkebab, on 01/04/2009, -0/+3This is one of my all-time favourite digg discoveries - thanks for posting it!
- lokai, on 01/04/2009, -0/+3I'm impressed by Bakshi. I might not have liked all of the movies he's made, but I respect the man because he was able to take his own unique ideas, follow them through, and make the sorts of movies and projects that he wanted to make. Not everyone can walk around saying that. :) If you can grow old knowing you've done things like "Fritz the Cat", "Heavy Traffic", and "Coonskin", that they all started as wacky ideas inside of your head and became real, finished products, then I say good one on you!
- nborders, on 01/04/2009, -0/+2I HATE his movies, but that is some damn good advice.
However, SP gave him the best nod. http://www.southparkstudios.com/news/3410
~n - UbIwerks, on 01/03/2009, -1/+3I dunno.... being in the feature/television animation industry for many years, I can tell you that he has spent a good portion of his life trying to barf on the art form.
'The Lord of the Rings', 'American Pop', 'Fire and Ice'..... that's the stuff nightmares are made of. - mongo22, on 01/03/2009, -1/+3Very nice.
- MamtaNarang, on 01/04/2009, -0/+2Very Inspirational - Tx for sharing
- inactive, on 01/04/2009, -0/+2WTF? Bakshi is a ***** hack, I'm not listening to a word he says. Everything he's ever produced has been half-assed, unfinished, poorly done and crap. I take advice from competent people, thanks.
- zyko, on 01/04/2009, -0/+2Tell that to the corps getting bailouts, and our government.
- CrowquillZ, on 01/04/2009, -0/+1Very inspirational. I'm not sure I buy it all, but he makes a lot of excellent points.
I was also amused that the web page with the story is running ads for "Disney Vacations" - rynsa, on 01/03/2009, -2/+3"Creatives." I've always strongly disliked this moniker. It hides all manner of capitalist sins.
The so-called "creative industries" are one of the most exploitative in modern times. Where, Mr. Bakshi, is the discussion on collective action, unionization, and long-term economic sustainability?!
Buried for falling into the same old neoliberal traps. - OBKenobi, on 01/04/2009, -0/+1The music industry's problem is not lack of creativity by musicians or the desire of fans for good music, the problem is the industry itself. It is controlled by corporations who have no interest in creativity, they merely want profit.
- Tr1sh4Lynn, on 01/04/2009, -0/+1So, *did* you get permission from the ASIFA board before "serving" this from your own website? Or do you think you're covered by having this put up on you YouTube first?
- OBKenobi, on 01/04/2009, -0/+1The internet is going to kill a lot of things.
- OBKenobi, on 01/04/2009, -0/+1His Lord of the Rings animation was kind of freaky looking. I remember being disturbed by it as a kid--and not in the way Bakshi intended!
- tomprocter, on 01/04/2009, -0/+1Good luck to all creatives in these hard times. Here's to 2009 being a good one.
- adiggityam, on 01/05/2009, -0/+1I think the first step is for artists to roll up their sleeves and change the industry. They are the only ones who can. And frankly, their are far too many artists in favor of copyright for this to happen right now.
It's not artistic creativity that's lacking, it's entrepreneurial innovation that's needed at this point. - diggpunklogic, on 01/06/2009, -0/+0Very true! You must always look at what your competitors are doing right, and if you can, do it better.
- diggsterrrr, on 01/04/2009, -0/+0I've been told by industry pros at cons that Bakshi does an awesome pitch.
He scores 5 million for the movie, [puts one in his pocket and delivers a 4 million dollar movie. - diggpunklogic, on 01/06/2009, -0/+0As a recent start up company in the user experience design / user interface design industry, this article gives me confidence in the choices we have made. It is a scary time to go it alone, but extremely exciting to be developing an industry that is needed even in these uncertain times. It is quite hard to tell exactly how this global financial crisis is effecting us when we have only been running for 8 months and have nothing to benchmark results by. If the times are a true test of a strong business, it looks like we are on to something!
- inactive, on 01/04/2009, -4/+1"Fritz the Cat" fame HAHAHAHAHA just goes to show how influential this ***** is. BURIED.
