Rails for Designers
glu.ttono.us — This is for designers who are going to be working with Rails and is intended to give them a good starting point to jump into work with a Rails developer. This is all introductory material. Basics are covered (MVC, locations of files) as well as a code example and more advanced topics (partials, ActionView helpers).

- concept10, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Many people have posted and dugg many articles and how-tos but Kevin Clark has many articles, including this one that clearly explains many aspects of Rails for those of us not specifically coming from a object-oriented background. Thanks again Kevin and keep posting!
- en3r0, on 10/12/2007, -4/+4I agree, this is a very good read for those who are not expert programers, like myself. Good write up man!

http://www.wirah.com - benliong, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3It's only when you have to have designers instead of engineers designing do you actually appreciate the seperation places in the MVC model. I think rails did a good job of seperation and flexibility. And this article is really well written so that I can probably just ask our designer to read it instead of having to go through everything by myself.
- ForbesBingley, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3I really, really, really, really, really need to get my arse in gear and get mi 'ead around all of this Ruby on Rails malarky...
- bloodmoney, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Excellent article. RHTML is kind of a throwback to the old skool ASP pages...which is weird if you have done any ASP.NET. But once you get past that, Rails kicks ass. This is one framework that really does increase productivity.
- vijayawada, on 10/12/2007, -3/+0When will he give up marketing this. Every 2-3 weeks or so I see either Ruby or Ruby on Rails. OK Please Stop Now, We get it.
- corbanbrook, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Amy Hoy is working on a book, a "Right-Brained Guide" to Ruby on Rails which i cant wait to see.
- snide, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0While I've never worked on the design of a rails project, I've taken a look at quite a bit of rails code and scripting. From what I've seen, a SMARTY based php templating system still has it beat as far as ease of use goes from a design standpoint. That's just a gut reaction though, I'm sure something equivilant can be done with rails, I'm just still so in awe of SMARTY's usefullness as someone who mostly works on design and frontend code.
- Bishoco, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1This is a decent beginner's level article. Some of the others are even better.
- purus, on 06/06/2008, -0/+1Links?
- n8han, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1And how do these "designers" preview their layout in rhtml files files? All those escape sequences don't render too well in browsers and HTML editors, so they're stuck working through an app server. Sounds fine if you're coming from PHP, ASP, or JSP, but it doesn't have to be that way...
http://wicket.sourceforge.net/- kevinclark, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0N8than,
It's true, using vanilla Rails you'd need to preview through an app server, but fortunately Rails comes with a built in ruby server. If you're running rails (which is an incredibly easy install) then it's just a matter of starting up the server, which is one command on the command line or a double click. There are also alternatives like Liquid (by Tobias Luetke) which has a previewer (Vision) which comes bundled.

- theitmonkey, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I have absolutely no idea what any of you are talking about... I am one dumb Monkey.
- syntheticpubes, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I stone-cold teabagged Kevin late one night a few weeks ago. Also, his Rails article is sweet.
- robbiedeluxe, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Excellent article.
