- thethinktank, on 11/07/2008, -0/+10Give me a wireless connection, my laptop and the itHouse-- I'd be set to go. That itHouse is SWEET.
- williampbarnes, on 11/07/2008, -0/+10I would feel like a Scandinavian drug lord if I lived in the The Ray Kappe RK1 LivingHome
- t0x2c, on 11/08/2008, -0/+6I am a Scandinavian drug lord and cannot afford that house.
- thethinktank, on 11/08/2008, -1/+7Wow, you saw all that from the photos?
- techbrute, on 11/07/2008, -0/+6These houses would really look silly in a trailer park...
- oxphantomxo, on 11/08/2008, -0/+4Although these examples are not architecturally stunning, They sure have come a long way since their original inception.
- princessrachel, on 11/07/2008, -0/+4if that's a "shed" then ur crazy! awesome stuff!
- morcheeba, on 11/08/2008, -0/+4Come to Boulder, CO, where we've got the swankest trailer parks!
http://www.blogazar.com/2008/03/metropolitan-home- ... - Taiyoryu, on 11/08/2008, -0/+4When the summary says "less expensive", then I was assuming something closer to $100K or under w/o land. The only ones that fall in that department are the single-room/studio dwellings. I suppose you could buy two and slap them together but still. It's tough to beat a 3-BR home with 1200 sq ft and 2 car attached garage for $150,000. Plus all those McMansions that have lost 20-50% of their original value, you can get pre-existing homes much cheaper. It's usually more eco-friendly to buy used and retrofit things like seals, insulation, and upgrading appliances.
- mentol, on 11/07/2008, -0/+4I'd have to go with the ITHouse, too :) Wicked !!!
- thethinktank, on 11/08/2008, -0/+3Are the Scandinavians known for their drug dealing? I learn something new every day!
- inactive, on 11/08/2008, -0/+3You suck.
- vurdillac, on 11/08/2008, -0/+3Any prefabs that don't look like a box? Because that's kinda boring. If you were going to go to the expense of building a new home, why not do something more interesting or innovative?
- mesasone, on 11/09/2008, -0/+2The LVM (625 sqf/studio) starts at $23,650. The LVL (3 bedroom, two bath, 1453 sqf) starts at $42,115, which puts it at a bit under $30/square foot.
What would be more interesting to see is how inexpensive you could build one of these to be "off-grid". I don't know a lot about off-grid living, but it would seem the most expensive part of building one of these would be running electricity and plumbing. Solar panels could supply electricity in many parts of the country, but I don't know about water - short of drilling a well which is not cheap either, and limits where you can place it. Perhaps in some of the wetter parts of the country you could collect rain water, and put it some kind of water sanitation system. - mieses, on 11/09/2008, -0/+1superficial formal difference is a very easy goal that *in most cases* results is junk architecture. the designer tends to focus on the sculptural aspects of the form to the exclusion of all other factors. it is usually a game played by impostors.
if you focus on form alone, then you might conclude that a bucky dome is more innovative than these houses. so why not build a bucky dome?
the term prefab housing is very imprecise. maybe productized housing is more accurate? - sancho320, on 11/10/2008, -0/+1Wow... PMS?
- vurdillac, on 11/09/2008, -0/+1In prefab housing, yes. If everyone is doing boxes, and you do something prefab that's not a box, that would be an innovation.
- inactive, on 11/10/2008, -0/+1No, you suck because you're a ***** idiot.
How do you like them apples, you ***** idiot? - mesasone, on 11/09/2008, -0/+1Different strokes for different folks.
Ass. - mieses, on 11/09/2008, -0/+1themadcow is right. the construction process for the IT and RK houses are pretty well documented online.
thethinktank was the first post on this thread and is probably working damage control. - mstrebe, on 11/08/2008, -1/+2Not one of the houses that mentioned pricing actually came in below $200/sq.ft., which will buy you a very high-end house in california (minus lot costs, which these homes don't include either) or a mansion anywhere in the midwest.
It seems as though the blogger may not have ever actually purchased a home. - mieses, on 11/09/2008, -0/+1do you think complicated forms imply innovation?
- mesasone, on 11/09/2008, -0/+1If you click through to the developers' websites, you would see they offer a variety of models , some of them are quite affordable. For example. if you click through to the WeeHouse website, you see that in addition to the 2,000 sqf (4,000 living space) monster for 315,000, they also have some more modest offerings for 100,000 to 150,000.
The author seems to be fairly incoherent, showing models that are huge McMansions and tiny single room studios, but ignoring the more reasonable 2-3 bedroom offerings. - drexl, on 11/09/2008, -0/+1You would be wrong. The The Rocio Romero LVM Prefab found at the link starts at $45,225:
http://www.rocioromero.com/LVSeries/LVL150.htm - oraclenet, on 01/28/2009, -0/+0They look pretty good, here in the UK they have similar modern residential log cabin homes like those found on this website: http://www.lodgesincheshire.co.uk priced at £129,950 and above
- loansexpert, on 11/07/2008, -1/+0"The Taalman Koch itHouse" the best =)
- buckygrad, on 11/09/2008, -1/+0Why, because I don't think these trailers with large windows are "Prefabulous"? I just don't like houses shaped like Kleenex boxes. But you're right, we should all like the same things.
- smackydoodle, on 11/08/2008, -4/+1Do you have to register with the site to see the amazing homes?
- TheMadCow, on 11/08/2008, -8/+2Apparently no one has bothered to look under the house or under the sink. Check out the pipes and water delivery. It's all cheap ass plastic. You'll wake up at 3AM one day with sound of water spraying all over the kitchen.
Green my ass. - buckygrad, on 11/08/2008, -8/+2These suck.
- inactive, on 11/08/2008, -10/+3What an architectural disaster. If you think that looks fabulous, then you need to step off your Mac immediately. The frappuccino fume is getting to your head.
