Possible Google Redesign in the Works?
jamesyu.org — Someone has stumbled upon a new Google layout when doing searches from the front page using Opera (and has taken a screenshot). Has anyone seen this? Doesn't seem to show up in IE.

- digg it
- bonky, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0I posted a thing about this earlier. It shows up in linux firefox, too.
- edd9139, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0I think it's a fake.
- AChunkyDICK, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This wouldn't make any sense at all. The Google Search is supposed to provide you with a relative search result within 10 results (which is why 10 is the default) so moving the navigation to the left wouldn't really provide a better surfing experience since the links to switch to images or local are right at the top anyway. Plus, doing so will decrease the available screen space (in terms of width) which might affect the ads on the right.
I think Google should change it's Search page when it does something entirely new to it (maybe using AJAX for the majority of their search technologies so that it would warrant a new navigation design?). - yoharryo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1That is what their Groups section looks quite a bit like.
But I really don't see the point in having a frame on the side, it would just create a load of empty white space below it. - Psykus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I seem to remember seeing this on Digg before. I'm leaning toward fake, it looks pretty ugly.
- silverdragon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I really like this re-design mock up

I think google should really consider something like that. - jamesjyu, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This isn't a fake, I've heard of others seeing this as well. Could be just a prototyping thing they're doing...
- Pepper, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Looks horrible to me :(
- Pepper, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1(dupe comment - sorry!)

- HarryP2511, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0It's real. I got it at the end of May in Safari (the main Mac browser) on a PowerBook G4. I remember thinking "what the heck?!"
Anyway, not that bad of an alternative, if we can choose which we want. Thumbs up to Google for finally modifying their layout (or planning to, anyway)! - vdxc, on 09/29/2008, -0/+1Google tests new designs all the time. They even said this in their blog months ago. Not really new.
