- TheAttacks, on 10/12/2007, -1/+104I love the one where they put a black guy in a crowd of white kids. . . that's just funny.
- dinobot, on 10/12/2007, -1/+69The funniest part of that is that the black guy is from 1994 photo , but the white kids are from a photo from 1993; does that mean there were no black guys in Wisconsin until 1994?
- MOJIRA, on 05/17/2008, -2/+58These are actually some really bad photoshopping jobs. Probably why they were noticed and called out as fakes. What I'm afraid of are the ones that are so good that no one can tell they're *****.
Also, I don't care about oprah and martha stewarts bodies, but I do care about the political ones that can in fact sway opinions. - dinobot, on 10/12/2007, -5/+51I love the one where the same soldier appears several times in the background
- igneon, on 10/12/2007, -5/+48By not being retarded?
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+42If you look hard in the middle of the second row of the soldiers, there's this guy with a humongous neck that appears 4 times in the left half of the picture, whoever photoshopped that did a crap job, and got paid for it.
And there's even a soldier with half his face cut off... - reddevil3, on 10/12/2007, -2/+39Are there black people in Wisconsin?
- gremos, on 10/12/2007, -3/+40There was a law in Wisconsin against photographing black people until 1994.
- merreborn, on 10/12/2007, -0/+34Those are nearly 100 year old fakes. Cut 'em a little slack. Back in those days, 'photoshopping' involved really, really careful work with scissors and paintbrushes. It was a hell of a lot harder than it is today.
- flash200, on 10/12/2007, -3/+35@night141
The soldier with half a face is part of the Zombie Special Forces Unit. For decades, zombies have been serving in the National Guard, under the "Serve your country, eat a human" program, but the shortage of troops has been forcing them into action overseas. - samk, on 10/12/2007, -4/+35They mention that the photo showing Bush reading a book upside down was a fake, but why don't they show it? Instead they show his bathroom break note, which had only been enhanced to make it more readable - hardly a "lie."
And why don't they show all the faked photos from Lebanon that came to light in the past couple weeks? - Urusai, on 10/12/2007, -1/+27OMG in the Wisconsin pic they airbrushed out the Asian, the Hispanic, and the wheelchair guy!
- JoeDonH, on 10/12/2007, -5/+29As a resident from Wisconsin, I will inform you that, yes, there are black people in Wisconsin. Getting the media to portray them as anything other than murderers from inner-city Milwaukee, or tire-slashing pro-Michael McGee supporters... well, can't help you there.
- rationalicthus, on 10/12/2007, -4/+26It seems to me that some of these shots are less "lies" than they are liberal applications of artistic license. For example, the shot of OJ in Time -- given the circumstances, was it a "lie" to make him appear darker and more sinister, or simply an artistic interpretation of the circumstances?
- cody50, on 10/12/2007, -2/+21is Digital composite technical jargon for photoshopped?
- mighty_mouth, on 10/12/2007, -2/+20"The dark side of the Force"
George Lucas doesn't care about black people - mzkw, on 10/12/2007, -1/+17http://blog.modernmechanix.com/2006/07/29/how-to-make-incredible-pictures/
How to photoshop in 1955. - Obvioustroll, on 10/12/2007, -1/+17"Photoshopped" can mean lots of things - from sharpening and contrast enhancement to complete manipulation.
"Composite" explicitly means that two or more photos were combined to create one image. - winterlungs, on 10/12/2007, -1/+16Vmark: it's called low-key photography and does make things look more sinister. Don't go crying racism where it doesn't exist.
- spartan777, on 10/12/2007, -2/+17the wisconsin one... political correctness at its most ridiculous. well, it actually gets worse than this, but this is pretty funny. I live in wisconsin. there aren't that many blacks in madison, so i see they must have wanted to 'lure' in a more diverse, the self proclaiming 'open-minded' and 'enlightened' crowd.
and what's with that guys ridiculous smile? goofy. - EochaidRiata, on 10/12/2007, -0/+14National Geographic has been having major problems with this in recent years, to the point that I cancelled my subscription.
Earlier this year (they eventually apologized):

Fake photos published July 2004 (they eventually apologized):

Fake cover in 2003 (no apology):
http://www.naturephoto.hu/home/index_eng.html - elastikos, on 10/12/2007, -0/+14Good to see the media reporting on fake and manipulated news content. Last night on Media Watch (TV Show in Australia) they highlighted the use of fake callers on commercial radio, strung out conversations for over half an hour on Jerry Springer like situations.
DISGUSTING ABUSE OF A RADIO LICENSE! - joeysafe, on 10/12/2007, -1/+15Sort of, it just means that two pictures were combined into one. Like if you make a panorama by sticking 4 pictures of some long building together.
- gd007, on 10/12/2007, -9/+21i like the picture where they made Trotsky disappear. now it is their (communism) turn to vanish from earth.
- Obvioustroll, on 10/12/2007, -1/+13Hey! Jackalopes are *REAL*! *REAL* I SAY!
http://images.google.com/images?q=jackalope&hl=en&lr=&c2coff=1&safe=off&client=safari&rls=en&pwst=1&sa=X&oi=images&ct=title
I have SEEEN them! - kofspades, on 10/12/2007, -3/+15@mediaphile
just like Kleenex isn't the only facial tissue. - gmillerd, on 10/12/2007, -0/+12Is there no penalty for doing this, the Kerry/Fonda example comes to mind. The political situation aside ... this should be some sort of illicit misrepresentation. Mashing up the pyramids is one thing, but photoshopping people for misrepresentation is another.
I am thinking for example Gary Hart wasn't actually with Donna Rice as this classic photo protrays: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gary_Hart of course and that photo is real. But what if it wasnt. - notfred, on 10/12/2007, -1/+12If you oversharpen a digital file, you can often see where it's been retouched; if they use smooothing to hide the changes, the nature of the "grain" changes.
- brewer, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11"National Geographic squeezed the Great Pyramids of Giza together to better fit the magazine's format in 1982."
I hope they put them back when they were done! - merreborn, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9yes
- Obvioustroll, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8A lot of these weren't actually intended to mislead. I mean, my grandfather had a jackalope head mounted over his bar - that doesn't mean people believed in jackalopes. I mean, not for long, anyway. I could never keep a straight face long enough.
- sgt_pepper, on 10/12/2007, -4/+12That made me laugh too.
- merreborn, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9I think the fact that many radio 'callers' are in fact actors reading scripts is actually much less widely known. It never gets any press over here in the states.
- Comatose51, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8Losing more respect for main stream media every day... It's sad when I turn to the Colbert Report and the Daily Show for my news analysis. At least in their case they don't pretend it's not fake news, albeit with a grain of truth.
- jsully, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7My favorite one:
http://www.thememoryhole.org/arts/abbey-road.htm
On the cover of Abbey Road, they recently removed the cigarette from Paul's hand. - nicksoni, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8If you liked looking through these, this link is cool as well. Its funny how much photos are manipulated: http://www.ni9e.com/detouch.php
- twollamalove, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Honestly, the bathroom break photo ruined this article for me.
- Necho, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9Bush and Sen. John Kerry were subject to fraudulent photos during in the 2004 campaign. One fake photo circulated of Bush reading a book upside down. Another showed Kerry at a rally with with actress Jane Fonda, but that particular encounter never happened.
I know I'm not the only one that caught the funny here :) - nixfu, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6

http://littlegreenfootballs.com/weblog/?entry=21956_Reuters_Doctoring_Photos_from_Beirut&only - armbo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5i have a friend in radio and had to play the role of the caller a few times. granted, it was for a q/a portion of the show, but it was mostly to set the mood for the calls they wanted, and to ensure that they at least had one call. in this case it was pretty harmless, but it's scary to think of the times when it's not.
- NeoTechni, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5That's what they do for childrens cereal commercials now.
And a fat kit, some kid with glasses, etc. Because a common family is diverse apparently. - KingMoses, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Apparently, just about every photo you can find of Walt Disney also has his cigarette removed. Disney was a constant chain-smoker and refused to even put down his cig for photos. Now the lung nazis are getting rid of all the evidence.
- Wavey, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Of course, jet black or chocolate-colored, the dude was (is) guilty.
- bobmckenzie, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4If you like that you'll love this. Recent photo fraud by media to make war look more dramatic than it already is. http://www.aish.com/movies/PhotoFraud.asp
- DruidGwynneth, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Some of these are bullsh*t, like the note enhanced so you could better read what it said. How is that any different from shooting with different apertures? I do this constantly for people and don't see anything wrong with it.
Now, straightening teeth, compositing two photos to create a made-up scene and trying to place people in positions that they would not normally be in ... that's the real problem, ain't it. - dpotter2, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4FYI...
The Nat. Geo pyramids was probably the first instance of digital manipulation that reached the public's attention. It was performed on a Scitex CIPC workstation powered by a HP1000 mxe minicomputer which used just 256k physical ram (plus extenive use of VM) and a 300mb drive: The original progenitor of Photoshop. - Wavey, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3In the fiirst two cases, it looks like Nat Geo were the ones that were lied to. I don't think they're just explaining it that way to get off the hook. Sounds genuinely like the photographers lied to them.
Don't know about the third one, though... - Nougat, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5I haven't heard that practice publicized, but every time I listen to some talk radio host (e.g., Mancow, Stern, Likus), it's exceedingly obvious that many of the calls are at least partially scripted.
- dbr_onix, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Acctually those "fairly obviously fake" ones are probably the most impressive (atleast at the time).. Faking photos without a computer, and Photoshop and the likes is far more difficult
Proof? http://www.worth1000.com/ - Look how many people can make fake photos now, which also explains why people belived the older ones.. Now adays I bet you'd stuggle to find any picture in a magazine that hasn't been edited at all (Changing brightness, removing blemishes and spots etc, clone-brushing out that person that got in the way, changing someones body because you couldn't get permission to use another photo etc etc)
- Ben - cranium, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5One time I heard one of your fellow idiots spouting off about how the holocaust never happened. Not even ten minutes later the same guy was lamenting the fact that Hitler didn't "finish the job".
And you guys call other people "liars", LOL. -
