- slut, on 10/12/2007, -1/+20That is definitely one of the better photoshop tutorial's I've seen floating around.
- grapfx, on 10/12/2007, -5/+24no, but I bet you could adopt this to make Uranus.
- Arramol, on 10/12/2007, -2/+21Woohoo, Magrathea! Wait...just a Photoshop tutorial. Dang.
- stevelucky, on 10/12/2007, -1/+13well that's great for greg martin. i'd never seen this before, and i think it's awesome. quit being such a whiner. definitely worthy of a digg.
people need to realize that digg isn't just for news that's never been seen by anyone before. sometimes great stuff slips through the cracks and goes unnoticed. digg is a great forum for bringing that stuff to light. so, just because you and greg martin have known how to make planets in photoshop for years, let those of us who've been too busy doing other stuff to find this tutorial (correction: greg martin's tutorial) enjoy this one. - maudib, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8http://home.tele2.fr/auroreblender/gimp/planet_en.html
tutorial for the gimp - KdoggMDF, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Here is a better one I think. By Greg Martin, awesome artist.

looks kinda more like that than a sun. - heretik, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Here are some great textures for this: http://www.kavewall.com/liquid-color/index.htm
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5Old to YOU, because YOU were interested in creating space. Was I interested in creating space? No. Therefore, I did not seek out this information the way you did.
- Aidenag, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3 opens photoshop, to see just how screwed up looking of a planet i end up making.
MIRROR! its already down halfway through loading my damn page.. i got 5 images :( - misaxi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3great, and the texture will essential change the planet appearance.
- there, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Nice work although I'll save myself the work and continue to drag my knuckles and drool waiting for this....
http://www.planetside.co.uk/terragen/tgd/decinfo.shtml - dj_sea2005, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4i wonder if you could adopt this for making a sun...
- Quantic, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I did this quite soime time ago, nice to see they made a tutorial for it though.
http://img151.imageshack.us/img151/4954/planet0po.jpg which is what i came up with. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Confusing? Huh!? The only thing I had trouble with was when he's saying "Apply these effects settings..." and you see a collection of 6 tiny little pictures where you can barely make out the details. Thankfully, after squinting, I think I got it right. There was also another point where I got a bit confused and had to back-track a little bit (around that same section, actually), but it wasn't too bad.
My planet ended up looking not quite as detailed as the guy's, and I'm a bit unhappy with how the shadow on the planet ended up (compared to his), but here it is:

If I can follow this tutorial and make this planet in about an hour, so can anyone. I'm far from being a Photoshop buff. Just take it step by step, and you should have no problem following the tutorial. - dj_sea2005, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2WOW! thanks for that link skabyss, Photoshopped solar system, here i come!
- simpleid, on 10/12/2007, -6/+8http://gallery.artofgregmartin.com/
This is greg martins tutorial, 100% reported as lame.
100% Rip off. - Aidenag, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2http://www.betterphoto.com/gallery/dynoGallDetail.asp?photoID=2277910&catID=&style=&rowNumber=1&memberID=142646
Here is the one i made via this guide, was first attempt, done a few more since that are drasticly better.. This one only had the one layer for land texture.
Definatly the best How to ive seen in a while, Fyi for anyone though, he forgets to tell you to place All the layers relating to the Planet(circular layers) to screen. - skabyss, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Actually I found a tutorial a while ago on how to make a pretty good looking sun, I don't know if this is exactly it, but the creation process is pretty much the same.
I put more layers in my versions though.

Hope you like this one! - JakeMcMahon, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5http://www.duggmirror.com/design/Photoshop_howto:_Make_your_very_own_planet./
- sontakey, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I took a stab at the tutorial and found it quite difficult to follow: took me about 45 minutes to complete. Here is what I came up with: http://www.flickr.com/photos/39991243@N00/170296686/
- StarWarsFan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2This is a great tutorial, especially for those interested in making their own Star Wars FanFilms.
- roessnakhan, on 08/28/2008, -0/+2That tutorial is pretty much a duplicate of Greg Martin's, but I suppose its good to have it on digg, because it is fun to make your own planets:
http://www.unm.edu/~aroessne/images/proj/wp/geonosis.jpg - dj_sea2005, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2The "crap" is supposed to be lights/lava on the dark side of the planet. i was just playing with ideas.
the planet isnt supposed to be earth btw.
if i take it out the bottom right of the image looks kinda empty.. think its worth getting rid of it? - Niffer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2@dj sea2005
That looks pretty good. My only issue is what is all that crap on the big planet? It just doesn't look right to me. - Niffer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I would get rid of it. With little details like that, you either gotta do it right or not at all. Maybe if it looked more like a grid? I dunno, I'm not artist. ;-)
- 8-bit, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Your nutts. Thats a great toot. I'll be trying it soon.
- damonshajen, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I definitely agree with StarWarsFan (as I once made plans to make a fanfilm, but abandoned them). I say this is great tutorial. I bookmarked it. :]
- OropheR, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Already seen or not, this is a good tutorial, ideal for guys who likes playing with Photoshop. I needed to make a planet as well...so good for me!
- MattLat, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Yeah, I notcied that too, and was going to comment on it. Glad someone else got it.
- droidiac, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I did this a long time ago, it's one of my favorite Photoshop tutorials, I wish I could find the one I made...It kinda looked like Mars.
EDIT: Ah Quantic, mine looked almost just like yours, I did the star field thing too. - etx313, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1And I will call it DIRKVILLE!!
- jdonner, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1All those nonense comments that say "good tutorial"...
People, a good tutorial is NOT a good tutorial because you like the end result. Geez, if that were the case then why bother writing down the instructions! Do the tutorial first and only then return and tell us whether it's a well written tutorial or not. - crazyman, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4That's one of the best tutorials I have ever seen.
- JustAGamer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Dude that's cool, now if only i had photo shop i could make me a awesome background.
- allcgtextures, on 10/30/2009, -0/+0Thousands of free to use high resolution textures
http://www.allcgtextures.com - BeachSide, on 10/12/2007, -3/+3Nice Tutorial!!!
Thank you - nuiman, on 10/26/2007, -0/+0Glad somone enjoyed it. Viva la digg!
- Zanneth, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0The layout of the page was kind of confusing.
- guitarromantic, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0The tutorial is kinda poorly written and confusing, even for a Photoshop buff. Seriously.
- Jackel003, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1Poorly Written.
- MrWalker, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0I agree, the tutorial can only be as good as it is written, not what the end result is. Poorly written, but as I said, the whole process isn't impressive. Basically what you're doing is taking tin-foil, wrapping it into a ball and calling it gold.
- crackintosh, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1cool, I just made my first planet! God aint got nothing on me!
http://static.flickr.com/46/169891527_895de908a0_o.jpg - xfTwitch, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0the first 4 steps or so are kinda stupid, but otherwise its not bad.
Needlessley screwing up the texture with the clone tool... baah. - MrWalker, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0I'm not 100% impressed. Seems just like a copy and paste process.
- shortkid422, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1No matter how much you or I get dugg down for this, we're right. This new "trend" of posting old news is getting, well, old.
- mmm_linux, on 10/12/2007, -5/+2yes i will admit that it is a very good tut. but i think the planets come out looking like marbles.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -6/+2uhh this is old man. I saw this last year when I was interested in creating space
